Your PSP can connect to the internet as long as you have access to a wireless network, which allows you to surf the web and play certain games against other people online. In order to connect to the internet, you must set up a network connection on the PSP.
Step
Step 1. Check if the WLAN switch is in the ON position
The PSP has a physical switch to enable the wireless adapter. If the switch is turned off, you will not be able to connect to the wireless network.
- On the PSP-1000 and PSPgo, the switch is to the left of the handheld area, next to the analog button. Slide the switch to UP to enable the wireless adapter.
- On the PSP-2000 and -3000, the WLAN switch is at the top of the handheld area. Slide the switch to RIGHT (right) to activate the wireless adapter.
Step 2. Check your network security configuration
Most modern networks run WPA2 security, which can cause problems with the PSP. You must ensure that your wireless security is properly configured in order for the PSP to join the network.
- Open your router's configuration page on a computer connected to the network. See this guide for more details. If you have an AirPort router, click here.
- Navigate to the "Wireless" section.
- Change your security type to "WPA-PSK [TKIP] + WPA2-PSK [AES]" or "WPA2 Personal TKIP+AES".
- Make sure MAC address filtering is not enabled, or add your PSP's MAC address to the whitelist if applicable.
Step 3. Update your PSP
You must be running at least version 2.0 or later to connect to a wireless network. See this guide for details on how to update your PSP without a network connection. The PSP is currently running version 6.60 (final).
Step 4. Open the Settings menu
It's at the far left of the PSP XMB menu.
Step 5. Select "Network Settings"
It's at the bottom of the Settings menu.
Step 6. Select "Infrastructure Mode"
This allows your PSP to connect to a wireless network. Ad-Hoc Mode is used to connect directly to other PSP systems.
Step 7. Select "[New Connection]"
This will create a new connection that will be saved on the PSP, allowing you to automatically connect to the same network at a later date. The PSP can store up to ten networks.
Step 8. Select "Scan"
This will scan for local wireless networks. Make sure you are within range of the wireless router you are trying to connect to.
If you wish, you can enter the network name manually. This is useful if your network does not transmit the SSID
Step 9. Select your network
Once the scan is complete, a list of available networks will be displayed. Select the network you want to connect to. The signal strength for each network will be displayed in a list. For best performance, you should get a signal strength of more than 50%.
Step 10. Enter a name for your connection
By default, the connection will be given the same name as your SSID. You can change it to something more familiar, like "Home" or "Work".
Step 11. Select your security settings
If you configured the router in the previous step, you should have selected "WPA-PSK (AES)". If the access point you are connecting to does not have a password, select "None".
Step 12. Enter your wireless password
After entering the security type, enter the password for your wireless connection. Wireless passwords are case sensitive, so make sure to enter the password correctly. You can find the wireless password on the same page as your router's security settings page.
Step 13. Select "Easy"
This will automatically configure your PSP to get the IP address of the router. Most users can choose "Easy" without having to worry. If you want to have more control over the process, or have a PPPoE connection, select "Custom". You will be asked to enter the IP address manually.
Step 14. Confirm the network name
A box containing the network SSID will be displayed. You can make changes, but most users can leave it as is. Press Right to continue.
Step 15. Review your settings
A list of all your settings will be displayed. Make sure everything looks right, then press the Right button in the direction bar to continue. Press "X" to save your settings.
Step 16. Test the connection
After saving the settings, you will be given the option to test the connection. Your PSP will attempt to connect to the internet. In the results screen, check the "Internet Connection" entry. If the entry says "Successful", then your connection is configured correctly.
