This wikiHow teaches you how to reorder all cells in a column according to alphanumeric data in Google Sheets, using a desktop internet browser.
Step
Step 1. Open Google Sheets in an internet browser
Type sheets.google.com into your browser's address bar, and press Enter or Return on your keyboard.
Step 2. Click the spreadsheet file you want to edit
Find the file you want to edit in the list of spreadsheets you saved, then open it.
Step 3. Select the column you want to sort
Look for the column heading letter at the top of the spreadsheet, then click it. This step will select and highlight the entire column.
Step 4. Click the Data tab
It's in the tab bar below the file name, in the upper-left corner of the screen. This will open a drop-down menu.
Step 5. Click Sort range on the menu Data.
This option will open a new popup window where you can adjust the sorting settings.
- This option will sort the selected column and will not affect any other data.
- If you want to sort all rows in the spreadsheet according to the selected column data, click Sort sheet by column on the menu Data.
Step 6. Choose a sorting method
Here you can choose A to Z (A to Z) or Z to A (Z to A).
- If you choose A to Z, cells with lower numeric data are moved to the top of the column, and higher numbers are moved to the bottom.
- If you choose Z to A, higher numbers will move up and lower numbers will move down.
- If there is a header row at the top of the spreadsheet, check the box Data has header row (data has header row) here. This will prevent the top row from being sorted.
Step 7. Click the blue Sort button
This step will apply a sort filter and rearrange all cells in the selected column according to the alphanumeric data in each cell.
