This wikiHow teaches you how to remove Bing as the default search engine or home page on the Google Chrome browser. Bing can usually be removed by resetting Chrome preferences on computers, phones, and tablets. If you're using a computer, you may also need to remove any Chrome extensions associated with Bing, such as Microsoft Bing FrontPage or Microsoft Rewards. If Bing continues to appear when you search or browse the web after changing your preferences, your computer may have been infected with the Bing.com Redirect virus. Luckily, you can remove it without any problems using any free malware cleaner.
Step
Method 1 of 2: Using a Computer
Step 1. Launch Chrome, then click the three-dot menu
It's in the upper-right corner of the Chrome window.
Step 2. Click Extensions in the menu
A list of all browser extensions installed in Chrome will be displayed.
Step 3. Remove all browser extensions associated with Bing
If there are extensions like Microsoft Rewards, Bing Pages, Give with Bing, or Microsoft Bing FrontPage, remove them from Chrome by clicking Remove. This extension relies on Bing. By removing it, the process of removing Bing from Chrome will be much easier.
You can also remove other browser extensions that you don't want or don't use
Step 4. Click the three-dot menu, then select Settings
This is the same three-dot menu as you clicked in the previous step.
Step 5. Click Search engine
in the left column.
Step 6. Select a search engine other than Bing in the drop-down menu
If Bing is next to "Search engine used in the address bar", click this menu and select a different search engine.
- If the search engine you want is not listed there, click Manage search engines, click the three dots next to the name of the search engine you want, then select Make default.
- Remove Bing from the list of recommended search engines by clicking the three dots next to Bing and selecting Remove from list.
Step 7. Check Bing in the “On startup” segment
It's in 2 sections under the "Search engine" section of the main panel. If your browser is set to " Open a specific page or set of pages ", you can replace the page to open with a website address other than Bing.
As an alternative, you can choose Open the New Tab page so that Chrome always opens with a blank page, or Continue where you left off so that Chrome opens with the last page you visited.
Step 8. Reset Chrome if the page keeps Bing open
If you have implemented this method and Bing is still showing up in Chrome, try resetting Chrome to fix it. This will delete all cookies, pinned tabs, shortcuts, and saved preferences. Some things that don't go away are saved passwords, web browsing history, or bookmarks. How to reset Google Chrome:
- Click the three-dot menu, then select Settings.
- Scroll the screen and click Advanced in the below section.
- Click Restore settings to their original defaults (Chromebook, Mac, and Linux) or Reset Settings (Windows).
- Click Reset Settings to confirm.
Step 9. Scan for viruses and malware if the web page keeps redirecting to Bing
If Bing is still showing when you search or browse the web, your computer may have been infected with malware called Bing Redirect. Run a malware scan on your computer to find and remove unwanted programs. Once the malware (or similar program) has been removed, repeat the steps in this article to remove Bing from Chrome.
- Malwarebytes is an excellent and free malware scanner available for Windows and Mac.
- On Windows computers, you can perform a scan with Windows Security, which can detect Bing Redirects easily. Type security into the Windows search field, then click Windows Security in search results. Click Viruses & threat protection, click Scan options, choose Microsoft Defender Offline Scan, then follow the instructions provided.
Method 2 of 2: Using a Phone or Tablet
Step 1. Launch Chrome and tap on the three-dot menu
On Android devices, the dots are arranged vertically and placed next to the address field. On an iPad or iPhone, it's a horizontal dot in the lower-right corner of the Chrome window.
Step 2. Touch Settings in the menu
Step 3. Touch Search engine
On Android devices, this option is in the "Basic" section. If you're using an iPad or iPhone, you can find it in the second group of settings.
Step 4. Choose a search engine other than Bing
When Bing is set as the default search engine, the address field in the browser will always show Bing when you perform a search. Touch another search engine (for example Google or DuckDuckGo) to prevent Bing from showing.
