Doing facials is fun but not pocket friendly. Fortunately, you can make your skin smooth, soft, and irritant-free by self-care and professional experience at home. You can use over-the-counter products, homemade blends or a combination of the two to create fun facials at home.
Step
Method 1 of 6: Cleaning
Step 1. Understand how important it is to clean your face
Cleansing the face means removing oil, sunscreen and pollutants from the environment that stick to the face. It also prevents clogging of the pores which will prevent possible breakouts. Lastly, cleansing your face helps your skin prepare to absorb the ingredients to be applied.
Clean your face at least twice a day, even when you don't plan on doing facials
Step 2. Tie your hair back using a hair tie
Wash your hands thoroughly and remove make-up from your face.
Use whatever makeup remover you normally use
Step 3. Use a cleanser or face wash that is widely sold
There are many choices available, starting from Rp. 10,000, - for face wash or Rp. 400,000, - for cleansing lotion. However, many beauticians say you don't have to drain your pocket to buy cleaning products, the important thing is to use a cleanser that suits your skin type.
- As a general guide, cleansing gels and soaps are more suitable for combination/oily skin, while cream cleansers are suitable for normal/dry skin as they provide added hydration to the skin.
- If your skin is slightly acne-prone, try using a cleanser that contains salicylic acid. This ingredient helps clear clogged pores to heal acne and prevent skin sores. One of them is Neutrogena's Oil-Free Acne Stress Control Power-Cream or Power-Foam soap.
Step 4. Make your own facial cleanser
You can make a cleaner using a few ingredients you may already have on hand. Here are some options:
- Mix 3 tablespoons of fresh apple juice, 6 tablespoons of whole milk and 2 tablespoons of honey. If you want a warm cleanser, microwave the honey for 10 seconds before mixing it with the rest of the ingredients.
- Place 1/2 tablespoon of oats in a food processor and process until smooth. Add 1 tablespoon of almonds and crush until smooth. Mix 1/4 teaspoon honey and 1/4 teaspoon soy milk.
Step 5. Clean the face with the cleanser that has been selected or made
Wet your face with warm water. Then, apply a quarter of the cleanser in a circular motion outwards on the face.
After cleansing, rinse your face with warm water and pat dry. Scrubbing the skin vigorously with a towel will only make the skin red and irritated
Step 6. Use a spot treatment
Use spot treatments that you can buy or make yourself at home. Salicylic acid is one of the spot treatment ingredients for acne because it can clean clogged pores while removing dead skin cells that trigger acne. Benzoyl peroxide is another spot treatment ingredient that is also often used to treat acne. This ingredient works by killing acne-causing bacteria, thereby reducing the inflammation it causes.
- Some of the recommended spot treatments include Malin+Goetz Acne Treatment with active sulfur and salicylic acid, and Clean and Clear Persa-Gel 10, which is a 10% benzoyl peroxide solution.
- To make your own spot treatment, apply tea tree oil or toothpaste to the affected area. Tea tree oil has antibacterial and anti-inflammatory properties and is a great home treatment for sensitive skin because it generally doesn't dry out or redden the skin like benzoyl peroxide and salicylic acid.
- Dermatologists recommend that spot treatments be used with caution. Excessive use of spot treatments can cause the skin to turn red, dry, and peel. Make sure you only use the spot treatment in small amounts.
Method 2 of 6: Exfoliate
Step 1. Understand the benefits of exfoliating
Exfoliating helps get rid of dead skin cells that can clog pores and cause breakouts. In addition, exfoliating brightens the skin and makes it glow. Therefore skin that is not exfoliated looks "dull".
Proper and regular exfoliation can make you look younger because this process exposes the new, fresh undercoat that lies beneath the old layer of skin
Step 2. Choose an exfoliating ingredient
There are many skin care products to choose from in stores to exfoliate your skin. Look for a product that says exfoliation on the bottle, or one that says "scrub" (meaning "scrubbing" all dead skin cells). If you have oily or acne-prone skin, consider choosing a scrub that contains salicylic acid.
You can also purchase products with mild abrasive content such as jojoba seeds, grain or corneal. All three can help "rub" the skin. Some products have coarser particles such as apricot kernels and skins. For sensitive and easily irritated skin, avoid using these types of exfoliants
Step 3. Make your own exfoliating treatment
There are a variety of exfoliating treatments that you can make yourself at home. Here are the options:
- Mix 1 mashed banana, 1/4 cup granulated sugar, 1/4 cup brown sugar, 1 tablespoon lemon juice, and 1/4 teaspoon vitamin E. Sugar is an exfoliating agent because it acts like tiny plastic particles that hold together. get rid of dead skin cells.
- Puree half a dozen fresh strawberries with 1/4 cup milk. The enzymes in strawberries destroy dead skin cells and the milk helps soothe the skin afterward.
- Mix 1 teaspoon of honey and a teaspoon of olive oil. In a separate place, prepare 1 packet of wheat flour. Add less water than recommended in the package to get a thick consistency. Add the honey and olive oil mixture to the oatmeal. Wheat porridge acts as an exfoliating agent, while the olive oil and honey mixture moisturizes.
Step 4. Apply a mixture of exfoliating ingredients
Be careful. Just do a gentle and circular motion to scrape off the dead skin cells. If you rub too vigorously, you'll only get a red, irritated face. Rinse face with warm water and pat dry.
Step 5. Exfoliate your lips
Use a lip scrub to remove dead skin cells. To make your own lip scrub, you can use a damp toothbrush and gently rub it in a circular motion, or mix castor sugar and whatever oil you like until you get the right consistency.
When you're done exfoliating your lips, apply lip balm to lock in the moisture. You can even make your own lip balm at home
Method 3 of 6: Evaporating
Step 1. Understand the benefits of facial steaming
Evaporation cleans the skin and pores because during the evaporation process you will expel sweat which brings with it dirt including pimples, blackheads, etc. In addition, evaporation moisturizes the inner and outer layers of facial skin and helps shrink pores.
Step 2. Boil enough water
You need very hot water to effectively steam your face, so bring the water to a boil in a kettle on the stove. Pour the water into a large bowl or sink. Wait a while until the water cools down a bit so you don't burn naturally.
If using a bowl, make sure it is heat-resistant
Step 3. Steam the face
Face the bowl for 2-5 minutes. So that the steam does not spread but is directed at the pores to open, cover your head with a towel like a tent.
Step 4. Do a few extra things
For added benefits, add a pack of green tea packaging, pour the contents into the water. You can also add a few drops of an essential oil like lavender.
Method 4 of 6: Wearing a Mask
Step 1. Understand the importance of wearing a mask
The mask cleans the pores more deeply and removes dirt from the skin. You can also use a moisturizing mask that adds moisturizing ingredients to the skin.
Step 2. Choose the right mask
If you have oily or acne-prone skin, use a mask containing mud or sulfur to attract impurities, such as Kiehl's Rare Earth Deep Pore Cleansing Mask. For dry skin, use a hydrating mask like the Nügg Hydrating Face Mask.
Step 3. Make your own mask
If you don't want to buy a mask, you can make your own. Mix 1/2 teaspoon avocado, 1/2 teaspoon honey, 1/2 teaspoon yogurt, 1/8 teaspoon brewer's yeast and 1/2 teaspoon cranberry, apple cider or kombucha in a food processor. Process until smooth and well blended. Here are some mask options for different skin types:
- For normal or dry skin: Mix 1/3 cup cocoa powder, 1/2 cup honey, 3 tablespoons cream, and 3 tablespoons oat powder.
- For normal to oily skin: Mix 1/2 cup mashed raspberries, 1/2 cup oats powder, and 1/4 cup honey.
Step 4. Apply the mask
Apply the mask on the face, avoiding the eye and mouth area. Leave it for 10-15 minutes to harden. Don't let the mask crack and look like a mummy. Clean the mask with warm water and a soft towel.
- If the skin feels like burning or hot during the use of the mask, wash it off immediately. Your skin may be irritated.
- When cleaning the mask, do not rub vigorously, but allow the warm water to dissolve the mask from your face.
Method 5 of 6: Moisturizing
Step 1. Understand the importance of using a moisturizer
Moisturizing is the key to skin care. Due to its function of moisturizing the skin, moisturizer makes the skin look healthy, smooth, and fresh.
The use of moisturizers also provides long-term benefits. Moisture allows the skin to work optimally, meaning skin cells can repair themselves quickly and grow new skin cells. This has anti-aging benefits in the long run. Studies have shown those who wear moisturizers have fewer wrinkles than those with dry skin
Step 2. Choose a moisturizer
Choose based on skin type. For oily skin, choose a lotion or gel instead of a cream. If your skin is dry, choose a cream that contains more oil. The higher the oil content, the easier it is absorbed into the skin to moisturize the skin tissue. If you have combination skin, choose a non-acidic lotion, such as Cetaphil, Aveeno, Neutrogena or Lubriderm.
Avoid using a light moisturizer after facial treatments. Your skin has just finished a deep cleansing and needs to be strengthened with a moisturizer. Otherwise, the lack of moisture in the skin will cause it to produce excess oil and clog the pores which can eventually lead to breakouts
Step 3. Consider using a moisturizer with sunscreen
The sun's rays can damage skin cells and one of the secrets to keeping skin looking fresh and young is to choose a moisturizer with sunscreen as part of your daily skin care.
- Try to use a sunscreen with a protection level of 15-30 SPF (sun protection factor). Recent research shows a higher SPF level does not make it more effective and, what's more, the actual level of protection may not be as high as advertised.
- Examples are Neutrogena's Oil Free Facial Moisturizer with a 15 sunblock or Clinique's Superdefense Daily Dense Moisturizer SPF 25.
Step 4. Apply moisturizer
Use your fingertips to gently apply the moisturizer, making sure you reach every nook and cranny of your face.
Be sure to apply moisturizer on the neck - the neck skin also needs attention
Method 6 of 6: Dealing with Problem Areas
Step 1. Remove blackheads
Blackheads, or open comedones, are wide recesses in the skin with black patches of skin covering the cross section; Blackheads are generally caused by excess oil production and can also be yellowish in color. If you have a lot of blackheads, you can remove them with a comedone extractor.
- The extractor is especially good for blackheads because the iron loop on the tool can squeeze the sides of the nose which the hands cannot. Place the circular part of the tip of the tool over the blackhead and press gently against one side of the blackhead. Slide the tool up and gently push until the blackhead comes out. You may feel a slight pressure when the tool is pressed and the clogged pores will come off.
- Make sure the pusher is cleaned with alcohol before use.
Step 2. Treat acne
Apply the medicine you bought or make yourself at home. Salicylic acid is one that is commonly used to treat acne because it can clear clogged pores and get rid of dead skin cells that cause acne. Benzoyl peroxide is also commonly used for acne treatment, which works by killing acne-causing bacteria, thereby reducing inflammation caused by these bacteria.
- Some of the recommended products are Malin+Goetz Acne Treatment with active sulfur and salicylic acid, and Clean and Clear Persa-Gel 10 with 10% benzoyl peroxide solution.
- For self-medication, apply tea tree oil or toothpaste to the infected area. Tea tree oil, an antibacterial and anti-inflammatory oil, is a great home remedy for those with sensitive skin because it doesn't dry out or redden the skin like benzoyl peroxide and salicylic acid.
- Dermatologists recommend the conservative use of topical medications to avoid overuse, which can cause red, dry and peeling skin. Make sure you only use a small pinch of the ointment.
Step 3. Treat the lips
Use a lip scrub to get rid of dead skin on your lips. For a homemade lip scrub, you can use a damp toothbrush in a gentle circular motion or mix powdered sugar and oil of your choice until you reach the desired consistency.
