Yoga is a relaxing, meditative way of exercising. This makes people who want to start yoga wonder what kind of clothes should be worn when practicing. You can choose clothes that are elastic and able to absorb sweat, for example: shirts and trousers/shorts made of t-shirts that are comfortable to wear and allow you to move freely. In addition, consider the type of yoga practice that will be followed as a basis for choosing the most appropriate dress.
Step
Part 1 of 4: Choosing a Yoga Class
Before practicing, first determine the type of yoga practice you want by finding out the available class schedules, for example through the yoga studio website or reading announcements in the studio. There are many different types of yoga practice, but the most popular is one of the following yoga classes.
Step 1. Join a Hatha or Vinyasa class for beginners
Beginner-only yoga exercises are usually held in Hatha or Vinyasa classes that focus on coordination between movement and breath. Movement in Vinyasa is slightly faster than Hatha with more intensive stretching, leg lifts, and inversion postures. Vinyasa classes with more difficult postures can be quite challenging, including for yogis who have practiced a lot.
Step 2. If you want to deepen your yoga skills, join an Ashtanga or Power Yoga class
Both classes are more challenging because you have to keep moving from one posture to the next.
Step 3. Practice in an Iyengar yoga class that performs each posture while holding out longer
It gives you the opportunity to find balance and enjoy the benefits of stretching exercises. This exercise usually requires assistive devices, such as blocks, blankets, or ropes (which are available at many yoga studios so you don't need to bring your own).
Step 4. Join a Bikram Yoga or Hot Yoga class as a means of detoxification
The temperature of the yoga room is raised to around 37°C to allow the body to sweat and detoxify. The hot air also relaxes the muscles so they can be stretched further.
Part 2 of 4: Choosing Clothes
The most suitable clothes for yoga are those that fit your body size and are not too tight. Whatever outfit you choose, do a few moves before you head to the yoga studio to make sure you can move freely and don't expose any part of your body that bothers you when doing certain postures.
Step 1. Wear a sleeveless shirt
Some yoga postures require a lot of hand movement. If you're wearing a sleeveless shirt, you don't need to straighten your sleeves and can focus on the posture you're doing.
Choose clothes whose neck curve is not too low and according to body size. This way, parts of your body that should be covered aren't exposed when you bend forward or move to the next posture
Step 2. For women, wear a bra to exercise if you want to follow Bikram Yoga
Since the air in the room during a Bikram Yoga or Hot Yoga session is very hot, wear a bra to exercise to make you feel more comfortable. The bra is designed to absorb impact to a certain degree. For yoga, choose a bra that can absorb light impacts. Men can join Bikram Yoga shirtless.
Step 3. Put on a sleeveless T-shirt
Choose clothes that fit your body size and are comfortable to wear. Before exercising, do some light stretching, raise your arms and bend your elbows to make sure that the clothes you're wearing aren't too tight.
If you wear clothes that are too loose, your chest will be exposed when you do the inversion posture. So, first tuck the shirt into yoga pants or wear a camis as underwear
Step 4. Put on a double shirt
If you want to take a yoga class in slow motion, for example: Yin Yoga, wear a light sweater over your shirt to practice to keep yourself warm at the beginning and end of the session because you don't move much. The sweater can be removed if it feels hot.
Step 5. Put on a swimsuit
If you want to practice yoga outdoors on a sunny day, such as at the beach, wear a swimsuit if you feel comfortable.
Part 3 of 4: Choosing Pants
Choose sports pants that are not too loose made of flexible and able to absorb sweat.
Step 1. Put on yoga pants
Yoga pants can be purchased at fashion stores that sell sportswear in a variety of colors. Choose a color that matches your personality. To make sure you can move freely, do lunges or light stretches while fitting your shirt. Yoga pants can be worn for other sports, for example: running or cycling.
- Trousers are more suitable to wear when taking yoga classes that don't need to move quickly because the pants material at the bottom can make you fall.
- If you want to take part in a workout that moves a lot so that you sweat more quickly, wear yoga pants that come down to your calf length.
- Pants models are quite varied starting from pencil models to wide ones. There are also loose yoga pants made of thin materials that easily absorb sweat. Choose the most suitable model so that you can perform yoga postures well without being disturbed by appearance.
Step 2. Wear pants for cycling
The heat of the Bikram Yoga room can be overcome by leaving the legs uncovered. Cycling pants are great for yoga because they don't shift when you move.
- Consider whether the material of the pants will see through when stretched. Choose pants that make you feel safe while practicing yoga.
- If you sweat a lot, wear black or navy pants so you don't look wet.
Step 3. Wear shorts that are not too loose
If you have a favorite pair of shorts that are comfortable to wear every day, maybe they can be used as yoga pants.
Step 4. Put on the sweatshirt pants
If you already have t-shirts, wear them. Choose pants that are not see-through!
If you've never done yoga and are still hesitant to buy a new shirt before you know if you're going to continue your regular workout, wear the pants you already have. If you want to keep training, buy pants that are specifically designed for yoga because the model is adapted to stretch so you can practice comfortably and freely
Part 4 of 4: Choosing Accessories
Accessories in the form of jewelry are not needed when doing yoga. It will be more useful if you prepare a headband, gloves, and a yoga mat.
Step 1. Get in the habit of carrying a headband or hair tie
Make sure your hair doesn't cover your face while you're doing yoga. For short hair that can't be tied up in a ponytail, wear a headband so the hair doesn't fall to the forehead or cover the eyes.
Step 2. Put on gloves to practice yoga
Although it seems less attractive, gloves are very useful. Yoga gloves with non-slip soles give you the strength to grip the mat well so your hands don't shift. Look for yoga gloves at sporting goods stores or supermarkets for quality prices.
Step 3. Prepare socks for yoga practice
You won't slip if you practice while wearing socks specifically designed for yoga as this can be very distracting, especially when practicing in a hot room or high-intensity yoga session.
Step 4. Bring a small towel
Yoga sessions usually make the body sweat a lot so the towels you bring will be very useful. You can place a towel at the front end of the mat to keep your hands from shifting. Use a towel if you don't like wearing yoga gloves.
Step 5. Buy a yoga mat
Yoga mat prices vary widely according to material and quality. It's a good idea to have your own mat if you want to do regular yoga at home or can't use a shared mat.
- If you're still unsure whether yoga is the right choice and want to make sure again, there are many yoga studios that rent out mattresses.
- Mattress thickness varies. If you need knee support when sitting on the floor or kneeling, use a thicker mattress.
Step 6. Buy a bag or rope to tie the yoga mat together
This equipment makes it easier for you to carry the mat because it can be hung on the shoulder. In addition, the mat will not open when not in use.
Tips
- Don't worry about whether you look good enough. Yoga should be a session of relaxation and introspection, rather than competing to be the most action-packed person.
- Set aside time to practice a few moves before leaving the house to ensure you can move freely while practicing in class.
- Many instructors recommend that yoga participants wear t-shirts. Thus, they can check the position of the legs and the muscles that are activated.
- Wear clothes in skin tones if you're worried about showing up, for example: a black or white dress pops up above the waist of black or white yoga pants.
- You don't need to wear shoes when you do yoga, but you do need footwear when going to and from the yoga studio. Wear sandals or shoes without heels.
- Prioritize comfort! Simple yoga postures can sometimes feel challenging if you have to activate muscles that you don't normally use in everyday activities. Comfortable clothing won't hold you back when you need to do more intensive and more beneficial muscle stretches.
- Use other yoga equipment, for example: blocks, ropes, and blankets. Many yoga studios provide this equipment. Prepare also at home if you want to practice yoga at home.
- To avoid being seen, wear underwear that is the same color as your yoga pants, for example: black panties and black yoga pants.
Warning
- Do not buy yoga equipment that is too expensive. Yoga clothing and equipment can be purchased at very low prices. Do not waste money just to buy clothes that are not necessarily worn again, especially for beginners.
- Excessive yoga equipment makes it difficult for you to enjoy yoga, for example because you want to buy expensive new clothes. Instead of obsessing over imagery, you can practice yoga by simply using a towel (on a plastic sheet) at the beach, on grass, or laying out a yoga mat at home and wearing your favorite outfit.
- Do not wear loose shorts made of thin material. When doing the inversion posture, the other participants will be surprised if your clothes are exposed.
- Bring a change of clothes. It's a good idea to change clothes after a sweaty yoga class.
