Highlights allow you to add color to your hair without changing the overall color of your hair. If you feel confident that you can dye your hair yourself, head to the nearest cosmetic store to buy some of the ingredients you need. In addition to hair dye, you will also need to buy bleach to lighten your hair color so that it can absorb the dye effectively. Once you have found a suitable color and have purchased other necessary items, begin the coloring process.
Step
Method 1 of 3: Planning and Purchasing Materials
Step 1. Choose the desired color
First you need to define a color for the highlight. If it's your first time doing this, choose a color that's a shade lighter or darker than your current hair color. However, you are free to decide which color you want. You may decide to add blonde highlights, or pinks, or purples. If you're not sure whether a highlight color will look good, start by dyeing a small section of your hair in your favorite color. If you like it, you can always add more highlights.
- Some people like pretty pink or purple highlights on the sides of their hair. This style gives a soft impression on your beauty.
- For a punk look, add highlights starting from the top of your head to the tips of your hair. Choose a color like blue, green, or platinum blonde.
- If you want blonde highlights or a shade or two lighter than your hair color, you may not need to dye your hair. You can simply use bleach.
Step 2. Decide how many highlights you want
Consider how many highlights you want to add. To create a soft effect, just add a few highlights. If you want to change the look dramatically, add highlights all over your hair. It is important to decide on the desired finish before starting the hair coloring process.
If you're not experienced in coloring your own hair, it's a good idea to start with just a few highlights
Step 3. Buy bleach and other products
The product you need will depend on your natural hair color. If you have light hair and you want to add dark highlights, you don't need to bleach it first. If your hair is dark or medium in color, and you want to add a light or unnatural color, you'll need to bleach it first to get bright, beautiful highlights. You can buy the products you need at stores that sell beauty products. The products you need are:
- Hair bleaching powder. Usually sold in sachets or tubes. If you just add a few highlights, there's no need to buy too many.
- Developer cream, which functions to activate whitening. If your hair is blonde or light brown, use a volume 20 or 30 developer. Never use a volume 40 or more as it can damage your hair.
- Red Gold Corrector (color corrector product) is added to the whitening powder to increase its effectiveness so you don't have to do the whitening process twice. You'll need it if your hair tends to be dark.
- “Purple shampoo”, which is specially formulated to reduce the yellowish tint of bleached or lightened hair.
- Hair dye brush, bowl, mittens, and aluminum foil.
Method 2 of 3: Whiten Hair
Step 1. Start with chemical-free hair
The process of bleaching and coloring hair can cause dry hair. So, this procedure should start with a good hair condition. A few days before adding highlights, don't shampoo your hair or use hairspray and other hair products. Let the natural oils protect the hair from the effects of the chemicals that will be used. When you're ready to dye, make sure your hair is completely dry.
You may have to start with clean hair before going through the bleaching process. Read the instructions on the packaging before using it
Step 2. Set aside the strands of hair that will be highlighted
To begin the procedure, separate the hair to be bleached and colored from the rest of the hair. You can do this by using a highlighting cap, or hair clips and aluminum foil.
- You can buy this kind of special hat at a store that sells beauty products. Put the hat on your head and use the hook to pull strands of hair through the small holes in the hat. Use this method if you want to add highlights all over the head.
- Hair clips and aluminum foil are great if you just want to add some highlights. Tie up the hair you don't want to dye, using bobby pins to hold it in place. Then, take a long strip of aluminum foil and place it under the hair to be colored. Insert bobby pins at the roots to prevent the strands from shifting.
Step 3. Mix the ingredients to be used
Put the bleach, developer cream and color corrector in a bowl. To find out how much to mix, read the instructions on each package. The amount required depends on the size of the package, and the brand of the product.
- If you're only adding a few highlights, use half the recommended amount. Do not let you prepare a mixture to bleach all hair.
- After all the ingredients are mixed well, the result will look bluish white.
Step 4. Apply bleach
Use a hair dye brush to apply the bleach from the tips to the roots of the hair to be colored. Use just enough bleach, or until it covers the entire strand of hair on the aluminum foil. Continue until the entire area to be dyed is covered in bleach.
- Use gloves when applying bleach to protect your hands. The chemicals used in bleach are harsh and can stain your hands and cause burns. Do not apply bleach near the eye area.
- If you choose the special hat method, use plastic food wrap to cover your head while waiting for the bleach to work.
- If you are using the aluminum foil method, fold the foil so that it covers your hair and protects it from drying out.
Step 5. Check the condition of the hair after 15 minutes
Use a towel to wipe off a small amount of bleach. If the hair is blonde, the bleaching process is considered complete. If your hair is still dark, reapply the bleach to the section of hair you wiped and replace the plastic or aluminum foil. Shut up again. Check every 10-15 minutes until you get the desired result.
- Don't leave the bleach on your hair for more than 45 minutes, even if your hair still looks dark. Your hair is at risk of damage if you do this.
- You can wait a day and repeat the bleaching process to get the desired result (this is common for people with dark brown or black hair).
Step 6. Rinse off the bleach
Be careful not to bleach the other hair. Rinse until the running water is completely clear.
Step 7. Use purple shampoo
Purple shampoo is effective for improving hair color and removing yellowish hues from hair. Wash your hair with purple shampoo after you finish rinsing the bleach from your hair. Let the shampoo sit on your hair for about 5 minutes. Then, rinse thoroughly and dry your hair with a towel.
You can find several brands of purple shampoo in stores that sell beauty products
Method 3 of 3: Applying Dye
Step 1. Prepare hair and dye
Again, separate the bleached hair as before. Prepare hair dye according to the product you use. In some cases, you will need to mix the paint with the developer in a bowl. Or, you just need to squeeze the dye from the tube into the bowl.
If you're worried about getting the dye on other parts of your hair, use a special cap and pull the strands you want to dye through the holes provided
Step 2. Use a hair dye brush to apply the dye
Apply the dye to the entire surface of the hair evenly from root to tip. You shouldn't be able to see the bleached hair after applying the dye. Repeat the same process for the other strands of hair. Make sure you don't miss any strands of hair before the dye starts to work.
- If you are using aluminum foil to separate the hair to be colored, replace the foil used for the bleaching process with a new one for coloring.
- Do not forget to follow the special instructions on the packaging.
Step 3. Let the dye work
The waiting time before rinsing depends on the product you are using. Generally, hair dye takes about 30 minutes for the color to sink in properly. To see color development, check your hair after 10-15 minutes.
Step 4. Rinse off the dye
If you are using aluminum foil, remove it from your hair. If not, you can just rinse it off right away. Flush the entire head with water until all the dye is removed from the hair and the running water is clear.
Step 5. Restore hair moisture
The coloring process can make hair dry. So, make sure you use conditioner to moisturize your hair after removing the dye from your hair. You can use a dye-safe conditioner, but the best option is a deep conditioner specifically for color-treated hair. Leave the conditioner for 5-10 minutes. Use a deep conditioner once a week to keep your hair soft.
Step 6. Take good care of your hair highlights
Once the hair is dry, the highlights will really stand out. Keep the color bright with a special shampoo to make dyed hair look bright. To make your highlights last longer, you'll need to bleach and color your hair roots from time to time as your hair grows.
You can buy shampoo or conditioner specifically for color-treated hair at almost any store that sells beauty products and supermarkets. If you're not sure which product is right for you, ask the salesperson for advice
Tips
- For best results, follow the directions on the packaging for bleach and hair dye. This guide was created to explain how to add highlights to your hair at home. In addition, the instructions on the packaging are tailored to the specific strengths of the product itself.
- Wear old clothes and protect your shoulders with a towel. It's a good idea to carry out the bleaching and staining procedure in the bathroom or in a safe place so that the bleach or paint that is spilled doesn't damage the furniture.
Warning
- The skin may show an allergic reaction to the hair dye. If this happens, contact customer service for the related product and consult a doctor if necessary.
- Don't apply too much paint. Follow the directions on the package about how much paint is safe to use.
