This wikiHow teaches you how to convert an RTF (Rich Text Format) document to another format using Microsoft Word or Google Docs.

Method 1 of 2: Using Word

Step 1. Open Microsoft Word
This program is marked by a blue notebook icon with the letters " W" White.

Step 2. Click File on the menu bar at the top of the screen

Step 3. Click Open…

Step 4. Select the RTF file you want to convert

Step 5. Click Open
After that, the RTF file will be opened in Microsoft Word.

Step 6. Click File on the menu bar at the top of the screen

Step 7. Click Save As…

Step 8. Click the drop-down menu "File Format:

In some versions of Word, the file format drop-down menu is not marked by a label. Therefore, simply click the drop-down menu labeled "Rich Text Format (.rtf) " to select a different file format

Step 9. Click Word Document (.docx)

Step 10. Click Save
Now, the RTF file has been converted into a Microsoft Word document.
If a warning message regarding the document format is displayed, click the “ OK ”.
Method 2 of 2: Using Google Docs

Step 1. Visit https://docs.google.com in a browser
After that, the Google Docs website will be displayed.
If you're not automatically logged into your account, sign in or create a free Google account first

Step 2. Click the button
This “➕” button is in the lower-right corner of the page and is used to create a new document.

Step 3. Click File in the upper-left corner of the window

Step 4. Click Open…

Step 5. Click the Uploads tab at the top center of the window

Step 6. Click the Select a file from your computer button in the middle of the window

Step 7. Select the RTF file you want to convert

Step 8. Click File in the upper-left corner of the window

Step 9. Click Download As

Step 10. Click Microsoft Word

Step 11. Name the document and click Save
Now, the RTF file is saved as a Microsoft Word document.
