If you need to extract text from an image so that the text can be edited, you can do so through an Optical Character Recognition (OCR) program. The OCR program will scan the image file and convert the text in it, so you can paste the text into a Word document. If you just need to insert an image into a Word document, you can copy and paste the image.
Step
Method 1 of 2: Converting Images To Text
Step 1. Download an OCR program, or find an online conversion site
The OCR program will scan the image file, and convert the text in the image into a document. You can use OCR to turn any image that contains text into an edit-ready document. There are various OCR programs, both free and paid, that you can install. You can also use online OCR services, which do not require program installation.
- Popular OCR programs include FreeOCR and OCRToWord. Both programs support scanning of JPG/JPEG images.
- Popular online OCR conversion services include OnlineOCR and Free-OCR. Both services support scanning of JPG/JPEG images.
Step 2. Open the image you want to scan
If you are using an online service, upload the image to the service provider's site. If you are using an OCR program, open the image in the program you are using.
Step 3. Wait for the conversion process to complete
If your image is large, the conversion process may take a few minutes.
Step 4. Copy the converted text
After scanning the document, the OCR program will display the detected text. The amount of text detected will depend on the clarity of the source image.
The OCR program will not provide the original image. Only the text will be converted by the program
Step 5. Paste the converted text into the document you want in Microsoft Word
Step 6. Check the scan results
Even the most advanced OCR programs usually leave small read errors. Make sure you read the converted text carefully to ensure that there are no serious errors.
Method 2 of 2: Adding Images to a Word Document
Step 1. Find the image you want to add to the Word document
You can copy any image from the internet, and paste it into a Word document.
Step 2. Right-click on the image, then select Copy to copy the image to the clipboard
Step 3. Open Word, then place the cursor in the desired location
Step 4. Paste the image by right clicking and selecting "Paste", or pressing Ctrl+V (Windows) / Command+V (Mac).
Step 5. Adjust the image size
You can drag the edges of the image to resize the image in the document. You can also move images by clicking and dragging them.
