Rome: Total War provides a wide selection of playable factions, but many of the factions can only be unlocked if you change the game file. Luckily, you can unlock factions easily if you have a guide to follow. After a few minutes of work, you can play the Campaign as Macedonian (Macedon), Pontus, and others.
Step
Method 1 of 2: Using the Embedded Faction Unlock Method in the Game
Step 1. Defeat the faction in Campaign mode
If there is a faction that you want to play, defeat that faction by killing all of its family members (generals). If this faction is a top priority, try making a large number of assassins (assassins) and sending them to kill their family members directly. This isn't always a good strategy for winning the game, but it can unlock factions much faster than defeating them on the battlefield.
Without using the hack listed below, you can only unlock the factions of Greek Cities (The Greek Cities), Egypt (Egypt), Seleucid Empire (the Seleucid Empire), Carthage (Carthage), Gaul (Gaul), Germania, Britannia, and Parthian
Step 2. Complete the Campaign to unlock all factions
After completing the Campaign using any faction, you will unlock all of the remaining playable factions in the game. Select the Short Campaign option to be able to open a faction faster.
Of the three initial playable factions, The House of Julii faction can win the game more easily
Step 3. Use the hack method to unlock all remaining factions
Some factions are not planned to be playable in the game, especially the smaller and weaker factions. If you are challenged to play a faction, use one of the methods below to unlock the faction.
In the Barbarian Invasion expansion pack, all playable factions are unlocked from the start of the game. Use the hack below to make the remaining factions playable
Method 2 of 2: Hacking Game Files to Unlock All Factions
Step 1. Find the Rome Total War game data directory (folder)
Try searching for the directory in one of the following locations. The directory location depends on the game version. This is the first step in changing the Barbarian Invasion expansion pack files as well as the Rome: Total War game.
-
Steam Version:
In the Steam window, right-click the game tab and select Properties → Local Files → Browse Local Files (or from the desktop, go to C:\Programs\Steam\Steam Apps\Common\Rome – Total War)
-
Rome: Total War base edition:
C:\Program Files\Activision\Rome - Total War
-
Rome: Total War Gold Edition:
C:\Program Files\The Creative Assembly\Rome - Total War
Step 2. Locate the Campaign data
If you've found one of the directories above, look for the file containing the playable fraction information or not at one of the following paths:
- To unlock a faction in Campaign Rome: Total War: \data\world\maps\campaign\imperial_campaign
-
To unlock a faction in the Barbarian Invasion Campaign:
BI\data\world\maps\campaign\barbarian_invasion
Step 3. Make and open a copy of the file
Right-click the file and select the “Copy” option, then move to the desktop, right-click and select “Paste” to make a copy. Open this file.
This stage allows you to edit the file even if you access it without using an administrator account. This stage also provides a backup copy in case something goes wrong with the game
Step 4. Move the faction name to the list of playable factions
The contents of the file begin with a list of the names of all the fractions sorted in the “playable”, “unlockable” and “nonplayable” sections. Select all the fractions in the “unlockable” section, then right-click and select the “Cut” option to remove the name from the document, then move the faction name to the list in the “playable” section by right-clicking, then selecting the “Paste” option. Before doing the same for fractions in the “nonplayable” section, read the following caveats:
- In early Campaign versions (where the game files have not been modified), the maximum number of playable factions is 20. Keep at least one faction in the "nonplayable" section to avoid bugs.
- In the early version of the Campaign, many people experienced frequent crashes when playing as "romance_senate" (SPQR) or "slave" (Rebels) factions. See the tips below for a solution.
- In Barbarian Invasion, the following factions must be kept in the " nonplayable " section (the game will crash if you try to play the faction): " romano_british ", " ostrogoths”, “slaves”, “empire_east_rebels”, “empire_west_rebels”, “slaves ".
- Each faction name must be indented after the name using the Tab key on the keyboard and only the faction name must appear on the line.
Step 5. Move the modified files to the correct directory
Save the file without changing its name. Move the original version of the file, that is, the file that hasn't been modified, to another location, so you can revert to the original version of the game if you hit a bug. Move the modified files back to that directory and run Rome: Total War to see the changes made to the game.
You may have to close and rerun Rome: Total War before the changes can take effect
Step 6. Edit the fraction description file if the method that has been done does not work
This is only necessary for earlier versions of Rome: Total War. If the game still doesn't show the additional faction options, and you're sure that the edits you've made have no typos, try making these additional changes:
- In the Rome – Total War directory, make a backup copy of \Data\Text\campaign_descriptions, then open the file.
- Enter the following text into the file, then save the file:
{IMPERIAL_CAMPAIGN_ROMANS_SENATE_TITLE}SENATVS POPVLVSQVE ROMANUS {IMPERIAL_CAMPAIGN_ROMANS_SENATE_DESCR}The Senate and People Of Rome
{IMPERIAL_CAMPAIGN_ARMENIA_TITLE}Armenians {IMPERIAL_CAMPAIGN_ARMENIA_DESCR}Armenians
{IMPERIAL_CAMPAIGN_DACIA_TITLE}Dacians {IMPERIAL_CAMPAIGN_DACIA_DESCR}Dacians
{IMPERIAL_CAMPAIGN_NUMIDIA_TITLE}Numidians {IMPERIAL_CAMPAIGN_NUMIDIA_DESCR}Numidians
{IMPERIAL_CAMPAIGN_SCYTHIA_TITLE}Scythians {IMPERIAL_CAMPAIGN_SCYTHIA_DESCR}Scythians
{IMPERIAL_CAMPAIGN_SPAIN_TITLE}Iberians {IMPERIAL_CAMPAIGN_SPAIN_DESCR}Iberians
{IMPERIAL_CAMPAIGN_THRACE_TITLE}Thracians {IMPERIAL_CAMPAIGN_THRACE_DESCR}Thracians
{IMPERIAL_CAMPAIGN_SLAVE_TITLE}Rebels {IMPERIAL_CAMPAIGN_SLAVE_DESCR}Rebels
Tips
- Many user-made mods add extra factions to the game. The mod that overhauls the game the most completely is Europa Barbarorum. The mod completely changes the faction, Campaign mode, and troop units so that the name is accurate to the history. You can play as Ptolemaioi, Arverni, Sabyn and others.
- If the game crashes while playing as SPQR (the faction name is written as “romans_senate” in the game file) or Rebels (it is written as “slave” in the game file), try to reopen the directory containing “imperial_campaign” and then open the file “descry.stat” in “son_of_mars” directory. Make the changes listed in this guide to the file.
- Some people managed to play Campaign as SPQR without crashing as long as they didn't click the “Senate” tab.
- To unlock the Rebels faction in Custom Battle mode, locate the Rome – Total War directory (see the first step in the “Hacking Game Files to Unlock All Factions”) and go to data\descr_sm_factions. Look for the section starting with “Faction slave” at the end of the file, and change the word in front of “custom_battle_availabilty” from “no” to “yes”.
