In tropical climates such as Indonesia, scorpions are animals that are easy to find. These small animals rarely enter the house, but can cause fear if you encounter them up close. Even so, scorpions are actually useful because they can control wild pest populations. So, only kill this animal as a last resort. Try the tips and tricks in this article to keep scorpions out of your home.
Step
Method 1 of 11: Remove debris and dirt
Step 1. This is to get rid of the dark hiding places and attract the scorpion's interest
Clean up yard waste, such as piles of leaves and shrubs. Get rid of piles of wood or stones. Place the wood pile at least 15 meters from the house.
- Scorpions live in dark places during the day and come out of hiding at night to hunt for food.
- Wear gloves and long sleeves when cleaning just in case a scorpion hides behind piles of debris.
Method 2 of 11: Prune the tree regularly so the branches don't hit the house
Step 1. This will clear the way for the scorpion to enter the house
Cut tree branches so they don't hit the house. Thus, small scorpions will be difficult to enter into the attic or open windows of the house.
Scorpions sometimes like to live in the shade of trees. Be careful when doing the pruning, in case there are scorpions that are there
Method 3 of 11: Get rid of food residue
Step 1. The insects that the scorpion feeds on will be attracted to the leftovers
Be sure to sweep up crumbs, spilled pet food, and other food debris that is inside and outside the house. Dispose of leftover food in a covered trash can where insects can't reach it.
If you have a fruit tree, immediately remove fallen fruit that is around the yard so it doesn't rot and attract insects
Method 4 of 11: Patch any cracks and holes in the house
Step 1. This is to prevent scorpions from entering the house through small gaps
Look for holes and crevices by walking slowly around the exterior of the house, especially around doors, windows, and foundations. Seal all holes tightly using putty and spray foam.
Other places to check for gaps in between are the air conditioning ducts and dryer vents
Method 5 of 11: Repair the leaking water pipe
Step 1. This is to remove the water source for the scorpion
Repair leaking pipes to prevent water from pooling in and around the house. Puddles of water will be visited by scorpions to drink. Repair leaks in faucets and other water reservoirs in your home.
- Also repair the leaky roof of the house so that water does not pool in the attic.
- If you have pets, empty the water container at night or move it to a location where the scorpion cannot reach it.
Method 6 of 11: Install a yellow light bulb outdoors
Step 1. The yellow light is less attractive to insects that the scorpion will eat
Replace all outdoor lights with yellow lights that insects don't really like. Turn off lights when not in use.
Remember, this yellow light can't prevent insects from coming, but only reduces the number of insects that prefer white lights
Method 7 of 11: Troubleshoot bugs
Step 1. This will get rid of the food source so the scorpions will become disinterested in your home
Check for spiders, termites, cockroaches, and other insects. Get rid of these insects using pesticides or hire an exterminator service to deal with them.
Scorpions prey on almost all small insects, but the most popular are ants, crickets, and cockroaches
Method 8 of 11: Try growing lavender
Step 1. Lavender is proven to repel scorpions
Plant lavender around your house or yard to naturally repel scorpions. You can also plant lavender where scorpions frequent.
You can also make a lavender spray by mixing a few cups of water with 20 drops or more of lavender essential oil and putting it in a spray bottle. Spray this mixture on the surface of the object or area where the scorpion does not want to come
Method 9 of 11: Light an orange-scented candle
Step 1. The smell of citrus can also repel scorpions
Light some orange-scented candles around the house or yard. Do this daily for a few weeks or a month to see if the number of scorpions in your area is decreasing.
You can also spray citrus oil on the surface of the object to ward off scorpions. Mix a few cups of water with about 20 drops of lemon essential oil in a spray bottle, then spray the mixture where you don't want the scorpion to come
Method 10 of 11: Raise chickens
Step 1. Chickens can suppress insect populations
Keep some chickens at home and let these birds roam freely. Chickens will peck at the ground in search of insects so that the scorpion's natural food source will be reduced.
Chickens may also eat scorpions that are encountered and try to enter the yard
Method 11 of 11: Catch and move the scorpion to another place
Step 1. This can move the scorpion population around the house
Wear gloves and protective clothing when you hunt scorpions. Catch the scorpion using long tongs, then put it in a jar. Close the jar tightly and move the scorpion to its natural habitat in a place that is far away and undisturbed.
