With flowers in vibrant patterns and paddle-shaped leaves, tuberose will add lots of vibrant color to any garden. Because this plant is difficult to grow from seed, tuberose usually starts from the rhizomes, known as tubers ("tubers"). Read on down to Step 1 to get started growing these beautiful flowers.

Part 1 of 3: Planting Your Good Night
Step 1. Wait until the threat of frost has passed to plant your tuberose
Nightlye is a warm plant that does not grow well in cold weather. Wait until spring to plant your tuberose – when the soil is soft and warm from the sun, it's time to plant.
If you live in a cooler area where the warm season is rather short, you might consider growing tuberose in a pot indoors. See Part Three to see how to care for tuberose grown indoors
Step 2. Find a spot that gets full sun
As a tropical plant, tuberose requires a lot of sunlight. Plenty of sun will allow tuberose to fully grow – and this is what you want. Sedap Malam is known for its beautiful and delicate flowers, and its colorful leaf motifs. Provide this plant with the sunlight it needs and you will have a very beautiful plant.
Step 3. Find a place with well-drained soil
While tuberose can survive in almost any soil, it must be well drained. a good way to know a good place is to look at the place after it rains (or flush with a hose). If the water remains stagnant after five or six hours after the rain, you will have to find another place. Although tuberose likes moist soil, he doesn't like wet roots.
If you don't have anywhere else to grow tuberose, you can help your place drain water by adding organic material. You can raise the soil level by five or seven centimeters using compost, peat, or bark – all of these you can buy at your local garden or yard supply store
Step 4. Consider the wind when choosing your venue
If you are planning to plant a tall tuberous variety, you will need a place to protect this beautiful tall plant from strong winds. When exposed to strong winds, tuberose stems can break or bend and this can damage the plant.
Step 5. Loosen the soil to a depth of approximately 30.5 to 38.1 cm
You can use a tiller or garden harrow. Mix in a layer of compost 5.08 cm to 10.2 cm deep. Compost will provide additional nutritional intake that will be enjoyed at night.
Step 6. Dig a 5.1 cm to 7.6 cm hole for each bulb
Place the single tuber (or rhizome) in the hole with the eye (or growing point) facing up. Plant additional tubers at a distance of approximately 30 cm from dwarf and medium tuberous varieties and at least 60 cm from tall varieties.
Step 7. Cover the hole and tuber with soil
Press the soil and water it with plenty of water. Watering the area will help the soil around the bulbs settle.
Step 8. Add a thin layer of humus on top of the soil
The humus will help retain moisture and will suppress weed growth.
Part 2 of 3: Caring for a Good Night Grown Outdoors
Step 1. Watch the shoots grow
Shoots should start showing two weeks after planting, but if you live in a cooler climate it may take a week or two longer. Good night needs heat to help it start growing. For optimal flower growth, apply a nitrogen-rich fertilizer about once a month.
Step 2. Water tuberose regularly
Tuberose needs moist soil, so it is important to water tuberose regularly. If you live in an area that receives 2.5 cm or less of rain per week, you will need to water your tuberose once a week. If your area is dry, water every time you see the soil is dry.
Step 3. Provide a support structure for the taller tuberose
If you notice that your tuberose is leaning downwards, tie it to a peg to help it grow and support its own weight. Learn how to cook pegs on your plants.
Step 4. Pick the dead flowers
When the flowering plant then stops flowering, pluck the dead leaves. You can determine which one is dead by looking at the faded yellow-brown color. Pick and do not disturb the plant parts that are still alive. Do not cut the leaves before they turn yellow because the leaves will continue to provide nutrients to the plant even when they are not flowering.
Step 5. Move your tuberose indoors after the first frost
If you live in an area that experiences frost, you will need to dig up your rhizomes after the frost kills off your tuberose foliage. Cut the plant to a height of 15 cm and carefully dig the rhizome out of the soil.
Some tuberose experts believe that you should let the rhizome dry for a few days before moving on to the next step
Step 6. Fill the plastic box with peat or perlite
Peat and perlite can be purchased at your local garden supply store. After you fill the box, place each group of rhizomes in the box, making sure that each rhizome does not touch each other.
You can place the rhizome in a brown paper bag lined with peat or perlite if you don't have a plastic box to work with
Step 7. Keep the boxes off the floor
You should choose a place where the temperature is between 7.2 to 12.7 degrees Celsius. Check every once in a while. If you see dry peat, spray it lightly with water to make it slightly damp. Good night you will hibernate this time, and will be able to plant again the spring after, just like the first time you planted it.
Part 3 of 3: Caring for a Good Night Grown in a Pot
Step 1. Consider buying a dwarf tuberose to grow in your pot
Sweet night dwarf will grow to 90 cm in height. Available in a variety of colors, such as bright red on the Ambassador type or the City of Portland type, which is known for its salmon color. Tuberoses are larger in size, so dwarf tuberoses tend to grow better when grown in pots.
Step 2. Use good quality, drained soil
Tuberose can grow in any growing medium that can be purchased at a garden supply store – this plant is not particularly picky. However, the soil must be well-drained, as tuberose can't get wet roots and can cause mold.
Step 3. Purchase a pot with drainage holes
You should also choose your container based on the size of the tuberose type you choose to plant. If you're not sure how big your tuberose will grow, do some research online or ask the clerk at a garden supply store.
Remember, you can grow tuberose with other plants in a container, but remember that the plants in the same container must have similar water and sunlight requirements, otherwise they will not grow well
Step 4. Dig a hole 10 to 15 cm deep
Plant the rhizomes (or bulbs) in these holes, making sure each rhizome of stunted or medium plants is at least 30 cm apart. If you have a larger type of rhizome, make sure they are at least 6 inches apart from each other. Make sure that the growing point (or bulb) is facing up.
Step 5. Drizzle your tuberose
You should water the tuberoses right after you plant them so the soil around them is steady and they can start growing. When it starts to sprout, water the plant as needed, keeping the soil moist enough (but not soggy).
Step 6. Make sure your tuberose gets plenty of sun
It is recommended to take tuberose outdoors for full sun during the warmer months. If you choose to place it indoors, make sure it is located near a window that gets plenty of bright sunlight each day.
Step 7. Bring the pot indoors before the first frost
If you take tuberose outdoors in the summer, make sure you bring it back indoors before the frost can spoil the condition. Store in a room where the temperature is around 7.2 to 15.5 degrees Celsius.
You can also dig up the rhizomes and store them in a plastic box with peat or perlite
Tips
- When planted in a warm climate all year round, tuberose does not need to be removed from the soil in winter. Just give it a dose of fertilizer in the spring.
- When choosing a place to plant tuberose, know what type of tuberose you are planting. Certain types can grow up to 1.83 m in height. Consider the size of the flower when choosing the ideal location to plant your tuberose.
- Separate and replant the tuberose every 3 to 4 years to prevent the plants from overcrowding.
- When you are ready to plant tuberoses again in the spring, use a sharp knife to cut them apart so that each plant has enough root and one eye.
