Method 1 of 3: Coloring Hair with Hair Dye Products
Step 1. Choose the right formula
Hair dye products have undergone many changes in recent years and liquid paint formulas are not the only option for you. Now, you can also use foam, mousse and cream formulas. If you want to cover gray hair, a cream formula may be a better choice. Products with a mousse formula are more suitable for recoloring hair, and foam products are suitable for coloring all sections of hair. However, don't dye your hair too often. Step 3. Do not wash your hair within 24 to 48 hours before coloring your hair
Unwashed hair will retain a lot of natural oils. The oil can help protect the scalp and hair roots from irritation. In fact, the dye can penetrate the hair shaft better if the hair is slightly soiled. Plus, unwashed hair is also easier to manage when you need to divide it into sections before coloring.
Step 4. Part your hair
Separate your hair into sections before coloring your hair so that all sections of hair are evenly colored. Divide the hair into four sections. Use hair clips to secure each section. Have some extra hair clips ready, especially if you have very thick hair. You may also need to strengthen the barrier once the product has been applied to your hair and the sections of hair start to feel heavy.

Step 6. Apply the paint on the hair
Open a section of hair. Use a brush to apply the paint on the first part. Color your hair and make sure you apply the paint from the roots to the tips. - Go to the next section and repeat the same process. Continue this process until all four sections of hair have been colored.

Step 7. Wait for the recommended amount of time

Keep covering the area around the shoulders with a towel to protect the skin from drops of paint. This can also be a good time to clean or dispose of painting supplies. If there is a drop of paint that hits the table or floor, clean it immediately so that the paint does not stick permanently.
Step 8. Rinse the paint off with warm water
Keep rinsing hair until the rinse water looks clear. Most products come with a conditioner that can be used after rinsing hair. Apply conditioner evenly on hair, from roots to ends. Method 2 of 3: Dyeing Hair Naturally Using Henna
Step 1. Choose the desired henna color
Henna or henna is a natural hair dye that does not contain harsh chemicals, such as those found in commercial hair dye products. Since henna is natural, there are not many color options available. Basically, you can use henna to achieve a variety of reds by using dark brown to black. Step 3. Protect your skin, clothing and the area around you
Henna is very messy and can contaminate anything, including your skin. Put on an old T-shirt and have some old towels handy. Cover all table and floor surfaces with newspaper. You should also wear gloves to keep the henna from staining your hands and nails for several days.
Apply lotion or Vaseline around the hairline, behind the neck and around the ears to protect these areas from henna stains
Step 4. Separate the hair into sections
Splitting your hair into sections helps you ensure that all sections of your hair are evenly coated in the dyeing process. Divide your hair into four or more sections. Use hair clips to secure each section. Make sure the clip can hold firmly. Also keep a few extra clips handy in case you need more clips to hold your hair in place.
Step 5. Read the instructions for use and mix the henna paste
Products used are usually equipped with instructions for use. Read the instructions carefully. If you are using henna in blocks, cut the henna into small pieces and place them in a double boiler or a heatproof bowl placed in a pot of hot water. For best results, make sure the henna is kept warm throughout the painting process.
- Heat the water (in the recommended amount) and pour it over the henna.
- Stir the mixture. After stirring, the mixture will have a consistency that resembles melted chocolate or mud.
Step 6. Apply the henna paste on dry and clean hair
Start with the hair at the back of your head and work your way up to the front. Open a section of hair and apply the paste to that section. Start from the roots to the ends. Make sure you apply the paste evenly throughout your hair. Once you're done painting, put the hair clip back on that section and move on to another section of hair.
- Continue the process until you have dyed all sections of your hair.
- Make sure the henna paste remains hot during the painting process.
Step 7. Cover the hair with plastic wrap or a plastic bag
You can also use a shower cap. Make sure all sections of hair are covered with wrap. For added safety, wrap your hair in a towel after you first cover it with plastic. If you want, you can also use a warm towel as henna works better in warm conditions.
Step 8. Wait for (at least) an hour, then rinse your hair
If you can, wait two hours. Because henna does not contain harsh chemicals, the process will take longer than painting using commercial paint products. Usually, you need to wait for at least an hour. Once ready, clean the hair from the paste with warm water.
- If you're having trouble rinsing your hair, use shampoo (a small amount) to remove the paste from your hair.
- Staining results can last for four to six weeks. At that point, you may need to recolor some sections of your hair.
Method 3 of 3: Experimenting with Other Techniques
Step 1. Try coloring your hair with a powder drink (eg Kool-Aid)
This is the least expensive method to try and, because the dye doesn't contain harsh chemicals, it's also safe for you and the environment. The resulting color can last for several weeks, depending on your hair color and the color of the product you choose.
- Dissolve the powdered drink in water before use.
- The next process is very similar to the coloring process using commercial hair dye products.
Step 2. Use hair chalk
You can buy hair chalk products at beauty and costume shops. You can even buy high-quality pastel chalk from a craft supply store and use it. The resulting color is temporary (usually only lasts for one day). If you have light blonde hair, the resulting color may last for a few days. This can be a fun way to try out unique colors or find out how your hair color looks before you permanently dye your hair.
- Its use is quite simple. Dampen a small section of hair with water, then rub the chalk directly into your hair.
- Let the chalk dry, then style your hair as usual.
