The style of the ponytail is so universal. This style is simple but elegant and suitable for all ages and genders as it can be worn by both girls and boys, young and old. With a little practice and time, you can master this versatile style.
Step
Method 1 of 4: Making a Neat Ponytail Tie
Step 1. Start with unwashed hair
You can make a ponytail with freshly washed hair, but it's easiest to do it with hair that hasn't been washed for two or three days, even if you want to make a neat ponytail. With unwashed hair, there is less amount of stray hair running around and the natural oils from the hair can help this hairstyle last longer and add shine to it.
If you've just washed your hair, don't be afraid to make a ponytail as you can still make it with the help of a few extra products to get the volume and texture you want
Step 2. Use a volumizing spray or dry shampoo before starting to tie your hair
Spray a small amount of volumizing spray or dry shampoo focusing on the hair roots. This product can add volume to the hair and make the hairstyle last longer.
- If you don't have this product, you can use baby powder. Sprinkle a small amount into your palms and massage into the hair roots. Baby powder can absorb unwanted oil and add texture and lift the hair roots.
- Make sure you've brushed the powder all over your hair so you don't have white patches or gray hair in your ponytail.
- You can make your own dry shampoo. If you have dark hair, add a little cocoa powder to darken this homemade dry shampoo.
Step 3. Curl your hair
With a curling iron, create soft curls or waves (take hair about 5 centimeters thick and curl that section of hair). Curls can last longer if you spray your hair with hairspray before curling it, or apply gel or mousse all over your hair before curling it.
- Alternatively, you can use hot rollers to curl your hair. Leave the roller in your hair until it cools completely.
- If your hair is fairly long, you can pile it high on top of your head, tie it into a ponytail, then roll it up in rollers. This won't be your last hairdo, but you can curl it quickly and more efficiently if you tie it into a ponytail first.
- When all of your hair is curled, run your fingers through the hair. Do not use a comb or brush because it can make your curls slightly straight.
- You can speed up the cooling process by spraying cool air with a hairdryer (if yours has that setting) to help your hair curl quickly.
Step 4. Squeeze the top of the hair
Take 7.5 centimeters of hair at the front/top of your head and gently work this section of hair with the tight-toothed side. After that, use a hairbrush to smooth the front of the hair.
Step 5. You can turn your head and brush your hair to get a pretty hairstyle
After that, gather all the hair into a ponytail using a brush or your hands. Be careful not to make the curls straight or reduce their volume. For a classic ponytail, position the ponytail in the center of the top of your head and the base of your neck (it should be at the tip of your ear).
Step 6. Tie a ponytail with an elastic that matches the color of your hair
To make sure your hairdo lasts a long time and no stubborn hair comes out, spritz some hairspray on it.
Method 2 of 4: Making a Side Ponytail
Step 1. Add a shine serum or spray to your hair
It's best if your hair looks soft and shiny for this hairstyle, so use a product designed to add shine to your hair before you start styling it.
Step 2. Create a very side parting
You can choose the right or left side, as you wish. Usually our hair tends to fall more naturally to one side only. For a natural look, choose your natural hair part. If you want more volume at the top of your head, part your hair to the opposite side.
For best results, you can make a parting according to the highest point of the eyebrow arch
Step 3. Gather the hair to the opposite side of the parting
For example, if you part your hair on the left side, gather the hair on the right.
Step 4. Tie this ponytail with an elastic behind the ear
Choose a rubber band that matches the color of your hair and if you want, you can cover the band with a little hair (pin the ends of the hair with a hidden bobby pin).
Alternatively, you can use a cute ribbon or tuck flowers into a hair band
Step 5. Give the final touch to your ponytail
Straighten your ponytail in a flat-iron if your hair is straight (or mostly straight) as this will make it look neater and shinier. For wavy or curly hair, use cream to separate and define your curls.
Method 3 of 4: Creating an Untidy Ponytail
Step 1. Start with untidy hair
For this hairstyle, your hair should not be too fine. As with most ponytails, use unwashed hair. Even if you've just washed it, this hairstyle will give your hair untidy or wavy hair.
An easy way to get soft, wavy hair is to braid it or twist it in a slightly damp bun before going to bed. While you'll have to spend a little time beforehand, it can save you a lot of time in the morning when you have to organize
Step 2. Gather the hair at the base of the neck
Use your hands or a brush to do this, making sure you don't tangle too much hair but don't brush too much. You have to keep the hair looking a little disheveled.
Step 3. Divide the hair into two equal parts
Then, tie the two sections of hair as if you were just starting to tie your shoelaces.
Step 4. Tie your hair two or three more times
When it's almost to the end, tie it with a rubber but not too tight.
Step 5. Insert the bobby pin under the knot you made, and then remove the hair band
If you're afraid that your hair will come loose, you can leave the band in your hair, but removing the band can make your ponytail look more casual and messy.
Step 6. Try a variation of this hairstyle by making it sideways
Instead of tying your hair at the base of your neck, part your hair at the sides and gather your hair under your ears. Divide the hair into sections and make a knot twice. Use a thin rubber band and pin the hair just below the knot.
Step 7. Finished
Method 4 of 4: Trying Different Variations
Step 1. Make a sleek ponytail
Spray a heat shield on your hair and then straighten your hair with a flat iron. Comb the hair into a tight ponytail. After that, apply mousse or pomade to smooth out unruly hair. You will get a sleek and professional ponytail look.
Step 2. Create a 1950s-inspired ponytail
Follow steps 1-3 to get a neat ponytail. After you curl your hair, don't brush the curls too much. It's a good idea to leave your curls dense and shiny. Make the ponytail higher on the head. You can tie your hair then brush it up.
Step 3. Create a ponytail inspired by the 1960s hairstyle
Follow steps 1-3 to make a neat ponytail. When you get to step four (chopping the hair), squeeze the top quarter of the hair. Sasak until the hair is very voluminous. Turn the roasted part over and gather it into a ponytail near the back of the head (smooth the top of the roasted part gently). The lower half of the hair is left loose. Gather the rest of the hair and pull it into a ponytail, just below the top ponytail. Divide the lower ponytail in half and pull the ends in different directions to move the tail tie up and secure it. Tighten the rubber if needed. Take a small section of hair and wrap it into both ponytails and pin it with bobby pins.
Step 4. Try tying a ponytail in a ponytail and braid
Separate the top quarter of the hair and squeeze the inside. Return the hair to its position and gently trim the top part. Gather this section of hair and make a ponytail at the back of the head and tie it with an elastic. Then, make French braids on either side of the head towards the back of the head where you tied the top ponytail. When you're done braiding both sides of your hair, gather all of your hair into a ponytail.
Step 5. Try a flip-through ponytail
Starting with a loose ponytail, this hairstyle works best in a fairly low ponytail. From the bottom of the ponytail, lift the end of the ponytail towards the slit you made, insert it and pull it down.
You can also make this hairdo using a half ponytail. Make a ponytail from the top of the hair and let the bottom half of the hair down
Step 6. Make the pig's tail
Divide the hair in half by parting the hair in the middle of the head, and make a ponytail on each side of the head. The position and placement of the pig's tail is optional: try experimenting with a low, loose (low behind the ear) pig's tail, or try a high, tight pigtail (above the ear).
- The classic pig tail is symmetrical (has an equal number of hairs on each side).
- This hairstyle is great for shorter hair that can't be pulled all the way back.
- Try experimenting with a straight part, but don't be afraid to try a zigzag part.
Step 7. Play with your hair's natural texture
Before you start, you can adjust the style of the ponytail to the natural texture of your hair. Straighten your hair with a flat iron if your hair is already straight. That way the result will be neater and shiny. Meanwhile, for curly or curly hair, use cream to define and separate the wave pattern.
Tips
- For a more romantic or casual look, leave your bangs untied in a ponytail or leave a few strands of hair loose at the sides of your face.
- Only do the front hair if your time is limited. While a ponytail is a great option when time is limited, you can also style your bangs and/or the front of your hair before tying it back. This will give your hair more volume and shine, and the parts of your hair that can't be tied back can be styled however you want (instead of letting them loose).
- If you curl your hair before tying it, if you have enough time, curl the entire section of hair. You also get neater hair. Also, if you have to let your hair down later, your entire hair will look curly and voluminous. However, if time is short, you can only curl the ponytail after you've tied it with the rubber.
- Make the whole ponytail last long with hairspray. Try experimenting with different brands to find out which product works best for your hair without making it look dry or heavy. Using too much product can weigh down your hair, straighten your curls or make your hair look greasy.
- Moisturize the brush with a little water or hairspray if you want a slick appearance. If you have bangs but want a sleek look, maybe you can pin them in with bobby pins or use a bandana to keep them from falling forward.
- When tying your hair into a ponytail, tilt it and lean your head back. This will give volume to the hair and make it tidier. You can flip your head down and then gather your hair into a ponytail, and this trick is great if you want to make a very high ponytail. But if you go this way, your hair won't necessarily add volume and it may be more difficult to create a ponytail that sits in the center of your head.
