A sect is a community that worships a thing, person, or concept with great passion, above all else. Although it can be a manipulative endeavor in the wrong hands, sects are basically a way to organize and change people's lives for the better. If you want to form a passionate organization based on a particular idea, learn first what ideas might work, how to organize a group, and how to keep your group growing healthy and productive.
Step
Part 1 of 3: Choosing an Obsession
Step 1. Choose a subject or activity that can make your life better
There are various things that can be used to build a sect, but the foundation of your sect should be a positive activity, concept, or idea that you think deserves to be dedicated and shared with people so they can see the positive value of it. You have to choose something that has the potential to make life better.
- You can form a cult based on French cheese, Star Wars, or string theory if it really has the potential to have a positive impact on the world. The foundation of your sect need not be strange or complicated. It might even be better if your sect is based on relatively normal ideas or things.
- While most are religious, sects are not necessarily religious. Sect behavior involves passionate worship of a particular person, thing, or idea. Sects can be formed on any basis. You can form a cult of card games canasta or even World of Warcraft if you want. Just make sure that your foundation is positive, kind, and harmless.
Step 2. Choose a subject or activity that you are passionate about
You might say you like Chef Boyardee Ravioli, but does he deserve the veneration he deserves in the sect? Sects can only be formed around things that are possible to be passionately worshipped, things that you may dedicate yourself to wholeheartedly and that can be related to various aspects of life.
- Cult films, or films that are adored by a group of people, are usually very specific, distinctive, and offer a unique view of the world, which is very meaningful to a small group of people, but confusing to the vast majority of people.
- Star Wars, Star Trek, and various science fiction films have immersive mythologies and rich universes, which make it possible for us to really get carried away. That's why films like these have cult-like fans and longer Wikipedia pages than similar films. The Kardashians? Not like that.
Step 3. Choose something that you think will benefit others
Your first question if you want to form a sect should be whether the world would be better or worse if everyone was interested in this, like us or like me? If the objective answer to that question is yes, like people's lives would be better off if they worshiped the Tom Brady glove that was thrown at the Super Bowl, then you're on a positive and harmless path.
Sometimes a cult is an attempt at psychological manipulation set up by a charismatic person. Sects like this are designed as if they are aimed at the welfare of their members, when in reality, all of the sect's activities serve to benefit the sect leader. Jonestown, Heaven's Gate, and the Manson Family are tragic examples of this kind of sect
Step 4. Study your obsession as best you can
If you want to use the word sect for the organization you are going to create, you should make sure that you yourself fully understand the basis of the sect so that you don't look like a master con artist or itinerant drug peddler.
If you're going to form a Star Trek sect, you'll need to know more than Spock's blood color. You need to know which episode Spock bleeds for the first time, the meaning of the color of his blood when drawn into the context of the color scheme in Star Trek as a whole, and the impact it has on your interpretation of the utopian view of Star Trek. Read fan-made blogs
Part 2 of 3: Forming a Group
Step 1. Appoint the chairman
Most sects have one leader or council. If you are the one forming the sect, you are most likely the leader. However, you must make sure that your sect is organized for a good cause, not for your own benefit or for gaining power.
Sect leaders are usually charismatic and manipulative, but if you want to appoint a council, you should choose people who put the good of your sect first. People who desperately want to be leaders should be the last resort
Step 2. Define your sect rules
Based on what rules, concepts, and moral order will your sect be organized and run? What is your sect's ultimate goal? How will you use Star Trek to change the lives of cult members or even the lives of others for the better? What message do you want to convey to the world?
- Focus on how you use cult foundations to change your life for the better. The difference between the Star Trek Sect and the Star Trek Fan Club is not in how passionately you admire Star Trek, but in how you use that passion to change your life.
- It's a good idea to write these things down into an official file, but you probably shouldn't use the term cult. It might give the wrong impression.
Step 3. Write a guide document
Each sect has a guide document that is succinct and mysterious, slightly philosophical, and easy for everyone to read. If you want your sect to thrive and be well-known, it's a good idea to publish your own guide to the life or teachings of your sect.
Step 4. Find a place for worship
You have to remember that most people find forming a sect based on anything quite strange. So you'll probably face a fair amount of protests and bad feedback if you really open up to people around you about the sect you're forming. It's a good idea to have a private and quiet place to do the things you want to do as you please.
- If your Star Trek Sect is already formed, chances are you won't be doing anything greater than watching the show, going over each episode, and maybe replaying some scenes, which incidentally could be done in the living room of one of the cult members.
- If you're brave, you can hold meetings in public parks or other places where you can attract attention, but the attention you get may not be what you expected.
Step 5. Create a slogan
All clubs, organizations and groups need a good slogan, so do sects. Slogans are a great way to sum up what your sect does, organize your sect around one idea, and keep people focused on that idea. Slogans should be memorable, simple, and not one-dimensional. So, your slogan should be mysterious and not too direct at the same time.
All Things Fly in the Sky” might be a good fit for your Star Trek cult. Or maybe adapt a line from one of the episodes, like, "I may be born in Jakarta, but I only work in space." Create an effective and natural slogan
Step 6. Slowly, recruit more people
When you meet people everywhere, start discussing the concepts and obsessions you have established as the foundation of your sect for your sect to flourish. Be the herald of whatever it is you want to worship.
Again, initially you may get a bad response and protests from people around. So it's best to try not to talk about the extremes of your sect when inviting people to join. The excitement of the utopian world of Star Trek? That's one of the good things. Your plans to build a star cruiser class spaceship in a warehouse in Jakarta? Just say that later
Part 3 of 3: Acting Like a Sect
Step 1. Ensure all behavior is in line with cult values
The sect is one. If you want to be a permanent member, or even a leader, of the Star Trek cult, you shouldn't mess around with watching other sci-fi films, or doing things that go against the values of a Star Trek fan. Make sure you and everyone else in the sect align priorities with one concept that has been set in the sect.
Often the sect members lived together. Consider moving into a house and giving the residence a name, such as The Enterprise. It can make you all grow as a community and develop the same ideas together
Step 2. Make your idea the only true idea
One way to get people directly involved in your cult is to make your idea seem like the only answer to all the problems in the world. You don't expect little interest in Star Trek. You need complete dedication to the power of James Kirk and the rest of the people in the sect. That means, you have to convey your ideas as the only way.
Usually, this is where the sect becomes manipulative. Try to have a healthy debate and discussion. Get your ideas across to other members well. If other people think Star Wars has an advantage too, make sure you understand all the bad things about the worldview from a Star Wars perspective. Preach and believe
Step 3. Apply your obsession
Keep doing what you've been doing. How you let your ideas change your own life and the lives of others for the better depends a lot on the concepts you believe in. When did the cult get more serious than just watching episodes of Star Trek and eating snacks? When will positive change occur?
Perhaps you could start asking cult council members to take Star Trek-related values more seriously, dedicate resources and time to science and exploration, uphold equality of gender, race, species, and caste, and even abandon ancient concepts. Earth's creature called greed
Step 4. Get involved in the community
Let your sect make visible and immediate changes in the local area for the good of the local community. Have a free weekly breakfast followed by watching Star Trek together or consider hosting an equality workshop and giving a presentation in full Star Trek spaceship attire. Let the public know about your sect.
Step 5. Ways to develop your sect
What are the criteria and processes you will use to recruit new members? How can your sect grow and get bigger without losing its core values and identity? What will the new members bring? What will happen if the publicity is increased? What is your ultimate goal for the sect? You have to think about and take these kinds of things seriously.
Hold on tight to the reality and foundation of your sect. You have to make sure that your sect doesn't turn into something evil and destructive. Is each member's behavior consistent with the values listed in your sect's guidance document? How do you revive those values?
Tips
- If you start your sect as a small group, you can become very famous.
- If you're having a ritual, make sure it doesn't involve any illegal activity (such as violence, drug abuse, etc.)
Warning
- Don't do anything illegal. No sacrifice. No punishment. Don't hurt anyone, not even yourself.
- Religion is not like a gang. You can't just shoot people. You will be imprisoned.
