Some natural health practitioners recommend regular cleansing of the colon (large intestine). This method can get rid of toxins from the digestive system.
Step
Method 1 of 4: Using Diet
Step 1. Avoid certain types of food
The best way to start a colon detox is to eliminate the foods that are causing the problem. Start getting rid of all the foods that burden the liver and colon. These foods include coffee, white sugar, flour, dairy products, and alcohol.
Stop eating processed sugary foods that contain a lot of sugar and flour. Also, avoid excessive amounts of cheese or ice cream
Step 2. Eat foods that can help detoxify the body
There are certain types of foods that can help detoxify the body. The foods in question include vegetables in the Brassica family, such as broccoli, cauliflower, Brussels sprouts, and cabbage. This vegetable contains many nutrients and a certain compound called sulforaphane which is very important in helping detoxify the body.
- Also, make sure you eat lots of fiber as high-fiber foods can rub against the walls of the colon and push food through the intestines quickly. Some high-fiber foods include green vegetables, apples, berries, and brown rice.
- Eating lots of fiber can improve colon health because fiber helps the remnants of waste in the colon to be pushed out.
Step 3. Get rid of all foods that can cause allergies and intolerances
If you've never had a food intolerance test, you may need to see a doctor or naturopathic doctor to have it done. Eating foods that cause intolerance to the body can reduce colon function and increase the likelihood of intestinal poisoning.
Step 4. Eat foods rich in chlorophyll to reduce toxins
There are certain foods that will help reduce toxins in the blood. Studies show that chlorophyll reduces toxin absorption and helps flush out toxins. Dark green leafy vegetables contain a lot of chlorophyll. Increase your intake of spinach, kale, collard greens, parsley, wheat grass and seaweed.
Try to include these types of vegetables in your daily menu. Place your cooked eggs on top of a pile of steamed kale or add some spinach and wheatgrass to your favorite smoothie. Why not try dried seaweed chips as a snack?
Step 5. Take probiotics
Probiotics are good for overall colon health and can also help with specific detoxification. Probiotics reduce enzymes in the body that cause the colon to retain toxins instead of excreting them. Taking probiotic capsules daily is good for general health, but you may need to take one or two extra probiotic capsules per day during the colon cleansing process.
You can also get probiotics through yogurt and other foods
Step 6. Drink more water
The body needs a lot of water to help flush out toxins. Most people should drink half their body weight in ounces of water per day for optimal gut health. For example, if you weigh 60 kg (132 pounds), you should drink about 66 ounces of water per day (1.95 liters equivalent), especially if you want to improve colon health.
- It sounds like a lot, but that's not the case if you drink a glass or two of water every few hours. Don't try to drink it all at once. You will feel very nauseous.
- It's important to increase your water intake when you increase your fiber intake or take fiber supplements. Additional fiber in the diet requires additional water consumption to be digested properly.
Method 2 of 4: Using Colon Cleansing Supplements
Step 1. Ask your doctor
There are many colon cleansing supplements on the market today. Some are designed to help flush waste from the colon, while others are designed to support the organs during detoxification. Before you take any of these supplements, talk to your doctor first to make sure the product is safe for you.
Step 2. Use a laxative or laxative
Laxatives are products that stimulate the colon to work faster and empty its contents. Use laxatives with caution as they can cause uncomfortable cramping and diarrhea if taken in high doses. Laxatives can also cause side effects such as belching, bloating, gas, or stomach cramps. Try a brand like Dulcolax or Miralax.
- Long-term use of laxatives can make the colon dependent on these drugs. So make sure you only use it for a few days at a time.
- If you want a more natural laxative, gentle laxative teas are usually sufficient during the colon cleansing process. Place one or two Yogi Soothing Mint Get Regular tea bags (available at online stores such as iPrice) in hot water for five to 10 minutes. Drink tea at night. Six to eight hours later you should have a normal bowel movement.
Step 3. Take a fiber supplement
In addition to high-fiber foods, supplements containing fiber bind to toxins and help the colon flush them out. Add two tablespoons of bran, psyllium, or oatbran fiber. An easy way to consume fiber is to add it directly to your smoothie or oats.
- Be sure to drink plenty of water when you add a fiber supplement. Otherwise, fiber can cause constipation or intestinal obstruction.
- You can also take soluble fiber supplements, such as Benefiber and Metamucil (you can buy them at online stores like Tokopedia).
Step 4. Consider magnesium
Magnesium draws water gently into the colon and has a natural laxative effect. Unlike over-the-counter or herbal laxatives, magnesium is not addictive and will not cause addiction if used long term.
- Consume 300-600 mg of magnesium citrate per day. Make sure not to take it more than 900 mg per day because too much magnesium can cause health problems.
- You can also buy liquid magnesium citrate and take it instead of taking a supplement. Make sure the amount of magnesium contained in the drink does not exceed 900 mg per day.
Step 5. Ask about N-acetyl cysteine (NAC)
N-acetyl cysteine (NAC) is a precursor of glutathione which is one of the main detoxifying substances in the body. NAC is found in many natural foods such as some types of yogurt and protein-rich poultry. In addition, NAC can also be taken as a supplement if you are doing a colon detox. If you take NAC supplements, the body will convert it into glutathione which can be used to help the detoxification process to be faster and more effective.
Take 500-1500 mg of NAC per day in capsule form during colon cleansing. You can buy them at health stores or pharmacies
Method 3 of 4: Try Natural and Home Remedies
Step 1. Use a packet of castor oil
The castor oil pack helps in cleansing and detoxifying the colon. Get a flannel (can be made of cotton or wool), plastic wrap, a bath towel, a hot water bottle or heating pad, and castor oil. Pour the oil into the flannel until it is evenly wet. Lie down, then apply the flannel directly to the stomach. Use plastic wrap to cover all sides of the flannel so the oil doesn't stain clothes or sheets. Wrap the towel around your body, over the plastic. Then place a hot water bottle or heating pad (set to medium heat) over the towel. Lie down for 10-30 minutes. Remove the flannel and clean the stomach. You can reuse flannel without washing it for up to 3 weeks.
Step 2. Try an enema (administration injection)
Enemas can be used to aid bowel cleansing during a detox program. When doing an enema, you inject fluid into the colon to stimulate bowel movements and help flush stool out of the colon.
As with laxatives, enemas can be addictive if used too frequently, but they are safe and effective procedures when performed correctly during short-term colonic cleansing
Step 3. Visit a naturopathic doctor
Narutopathic doctors or naturopaths are trained to detoxify patients in a safe and correct way. A naturopathic doctor can examine your medical history as well as your medications and decide which type of detox procedure is most suitable for you. They can tell you how often you should do enemas, and they can prescribe herbs, supplements, and home remedies to help detoxify the body safely and naturally.
Method 4 of 4: Performing Colonic Irrigation
Step 1. Consider colonic irrigation
Colon therapists perform colon irrigation procedures in their practice every day. Colonic irrigation can be a bit uncomfortable, but it can be very effective in detoxifying the colon. Make sure you see a colon therapist who is trained in practicing safe and clean procedures.
Step 2. Ask your doctor about this procedure
If you have colon problems, ask your doctor about colonic irrigation and what will happen in the process. During the colonic irrigation process, the colon therapist carefully inserts a tube into the anus. The tube is connected to a pump that pumps water or other fluids into the large intestine. Once the colon is full of fluid, the therapist removes the first tube and carefully inserts a new tube. The therapist will massage the abdomen to remove water and debris from the colon.
- The therapist may repeat the above process to thoroughly cleanse the bowel. The amount of water that can be pumped and removed during this procedure can be up to 16 gallons.
- Subsequent procedures may involve water treated with probiotics, herbs, or coffee to help remove waste from the colon.
Step 3. Make sure you defecate at least once a day
The longer the stool stays in the colon, the longer it will take the body to reabsorb the toxins. Many of the changes mentioned above can help you have a bowel movement every day if this is not happening to you right now.
- If you've improved your diet and tried other options to help, but don't have a bowel movement at least once a day, it's a good idea to visit your doctor for further evaluation and advice.
- If you have more than 2 bowel movements per day or loose stools, consider consulting your doctor before performing colonic irrigation.
Tips
- Remember to discuss all supplements and procedures with your doctor before starting a colon detox program.
- Avoid colon cleansing programs if you have recently had abdominal surgery or have tumors anywhere in the digestive system, heart disease, any kidney disorders, Crohn's disease, internal or serious hemorrhoids, diverticulitis, ulcerative colitis, and rectal prolapse.
