If you want to have longer and thicker eyelashes, there are many ways you can try. Many of the following methods have no scientific evidence to support them, but are highly recommended by a number of alternative health practitioners and enthusiasts of DIY (Do It Yourself) beauty methods. People who have already tried the following methods claim that the results will be visible within a month.
Step
Method 1 of 5: Consider Eyelash Health and Hygiene
Step 1. Eat foods that promote healthy hair growth
The following foods have been shown to help grow healthy hair:
- Salmon contains omega-3 fatty acids, which promote the growth of thick and shiny hair.
- Greek yogurt contains vitamin B5, which increases blood flow and helps keep hair thick.
- Spinach contains vitamin A, iron, beta-carotene, folate, and vitamin C, which when combined make hair strong and moisturized.
- Guava contains vitamin C, which works to prevent split ends.
- Meats, iron-fortified cereals, and green leafy plants will provide you with the iron you need to keep your hair growing.
- Low-fat poultry and other low-fat protein sources can promote hair growth. When you don't get enough protein, your hair growth stops.
- Cinnamon will help increase circulation, which brings oxygen and nutrients to your hair follicles.
Step 2. Remove makeup every night
Wearing makeup can dry out your eyelashes, making them brittle and prone to cracking or falling out. Not removing eye makeup can also cause irritation or even hordeolum (eyelid infection).
Hordeolum is a pimple that appears on the eyelids, often around the lash line. It is caused by clogged oil glands as well as bacteria. Irritation caused by hordeolum can cause eyelashes to fall out
Step 3. Gently clean your eyelids and eyelashes
Use a gentle eye makeup remover. Coconut oil is a great option, as it will remove makeup as well as moisturize your lashes. Coconut oil also has antibacterial properties.
- One great way to remove makeup from your eyes is to gently massage your eyelids and eyelashes with coconut oil, then blot the oil and makeup off with a cotton swab.
- Make sure you don't rub your eyes too hard when cleaning them, as this can cause eyelashes to fall out.
Step 4. Use a gentle facial cleanser after removing makeup
After removing your make-up, apply a gentle cleanser to the entire face, including the eyelids. This will help remove any remaining oil.
Your eyelids should be fairly clean by now, so apply the cleanser by lightly rubbing your eyes. No need to rub it
Step 5. Rest your lashes from applying makeup
Try to avoid wearing makeup every day-especially eye makeup and mascara. Using makeup every day can dry out your eyelashes and irritate your eyes, which can cause them to crack or even fall out.
- If you need to wear makeup to work or school, try to spend a day without makeup on the weekends.
- At the very least, remove makeup as soon as you get home and if you don't plan on going out for the rest of the day/night.
Step 6. Avoid waterproof mascara
Not only does waterproof mascara dry out your lashes, it's also harder to remove than non-waterproof formulas. The more you try to remove the mascara, the more likely you are to make your lashes fall out at the same time.
Step 7. Consider painting your eyelashes darker
See if you can find someone who uses natural paint and can dye your eyelashes darker. Having darker lashes can make it easier for you not to use mascara.
If you decide to dye your eyelashes, avoid chemical paints, as these can damage your eyelashes and eyes in the long run. Some experts recommend the use of semi-permanent paint made from vegetables
Step 8. Be careful when wearing false eyelashes and eyelash curlers
Both involve pulling and applying pressure to the eyelashes which can cause them to fall out. If you need to use an eyelash curler, apply gentle pressure a few times instead of pressing hard.
If you do use an eyelash curler, be sure to only use it BEFORE applying mascara to your lashes. Using it on wet lashes will increase the chances of the lashes sticking to the curling iron and falling off
Step 9. Do not rub or pull the eyelashes
Whether you're cleaning or trying to get something out of your eye, avoid rubbing or pulling your lashes, as doing so can cause them to crack or fall out.
- Rubbing the eyelashes means applying firm pressure while moving your fingers or other objects back and forth or up and down, along the eyelashes.
- Keep in mind that rubbing your eyelashes is not the same as massaging your eyelids, which can actually improve the health of your eyelids and eyelashes.
Method 2 of 5: Massaging the Eyelids
Step 1. Wash and dry your hands
You need to make sure your hands are clean and dry before massaging your eyelids. Otherwise, you may risk irritating your eyes or causing a pimple (hordeolum) to form.
Step 2. Place a warm compress on the eyelid
You can also use a clean cloth soaked in very warm water. Just make sure the water isn't so hot that it can burn your skin. This will help to open clogged pores and deeply cleanse the eyelids and lash line.
Step 3. Gently massage your eyelids and lash line
Run your fingers along your eyelid toward your eye-down your upper eyelid, and up on your lower eyelid. Massaging this area will keep the pores clean, increase blood flow, and stimulate hair growth.
- Make sure you apply gentle pressure to your eyelids as you massage them. The pressure should not be so hard that it can hurt your eyelids or eyeballs however.
- You can do this with or without using oil. If you use oil, be careful not to get the oil in your eyes, and then wash your face well afterwards to prevent the oil from clogging your pores. Coconut oil can be a great option because it has antibacterial properties.
Step 4. Repeat 5 to 10 times for 30 seconds
Continue rubbing movements on each eyelid for about 30 seconds on each eyelid. If you feel discomfort, consider reducing the pressure applied, or taking a break.
Step 5. Repeat at least 2 to 3 times a week
Some people even massage their eyelids once a day.
Method 3 of 5: Oiling the Eyelashes
Step 1. Know what oils are beneficial for eyelashes
Many alternative health practitioners and DIY beauty enthusiasts believe that the following oils can stimulate hair growth, but scientific research is still needed to prove that these methods actually work:
- Castor oil is one of the most commonly recommended oils to help thicken and plump eyelashes. Try buying a brand of castor oil that is natural and hexane-free.
- Cedarwood oil is a stimulant that promotes hair growth.
- Coconut oil contains lauric acid, which can help promote hair health and growth by preventing protein loss.
- Extra virgin olive oil has moisturizing and antibacterial properties that can help you achieve thicker, thicker eyelashes.
- Jojoba oil has long been revered as a natural remedy for hair growth. This oil has been shown to moisturize and nourish hair, and can stimulate its growth.
- Moroccan argan oil is rich in antioxidants, and it moisturizes and nourishes your hair.
- Rosemary oil stimulates hair roots, promotes hair growth, and increases circulation.
- Vitamin E oil can be taken as a supplement or applied directly to promote hair growth.
Step 2. Dilute the oil
Some oils like coconut or olive oil, for example, can be applied directly to the eyelashes without having to be diluted. Essential oils, however, have a strong odor, which can cause eye irritation if not diluted with solvent oils.
Extra virgin olive oil and jojoba oil are commonly used to dilute essential oils. The amount to use will depend on your personal taste, but you may need to start with 2 to 4 drops of essential oil for each teaspoon of solvent oil
Step 3. Know an example of an eyelash growth recipe
A popular hair growth serum recipe is to mix 1/2 teaspoon of coconut oil with 2 to 4 drops of lavender essential oil. You can even mix it in the palm of your hand.
If you want to make larger quantities, use the same ratio in larger quantities, then store the mixture in an airtight container, away from light
Step 4. Wash the area around the eyes
Make sure the eyes are clean of makeup or other dirt/dust. Gently wash your eye area by hand, being careful not to rub or put too much pressure on your eyes and eyelashes.
Step 5. Apply oil or oil mixture on the eyelashes
Use your fingers or a cotton swab to do this. Start at the roots and work your way to the ends of the hair.
Step 6. Be careful not to get in the eyes
Essential oils can be irritating to the eyes, so be careful not to get any drops of the oil into your eyes while applying them. If essential oils get into your eyes, rinse your eyes with cool, clean water.
To rinse your eyes, take cold or lukewarm water with your hands or fill the water into a basin and bend down to place your eyes in the water. Open and close your eyes repeatedly, remove the water from your hands, then repeat as many times as necessary until your eyes feel clean
Step 7. Leave it overnight
Ideally, apply serum to your lashes before going to bed so that your lashes can really get all the benefits.
Step 8. Clean the eyes thoroughly the next day
Be sure to clean your eyes well the next day to keep the pores and glands from clogging. Remember to clean your eyes gently-don't rub them!
Step 9. Repeat several times a week
If you experience irritation of any kind, stop immediately using any oil you are applying to your eyelashes.
Method 4 of 5: Lengthening Eyelashes with Plants
Step 1. Use green tea for internal or external use
Research shows that green tea can promote hair growth. Research conducted on mice who drank tea for 6 months showed significant hair growth in previously bald areas.
Green tea can also stimulate growth and smooth hair when applied for external use (directly on the skin/hair)
Step 2. Apply aloe vera to the eyelashes
Many DIY beauty enthusiasts and alternative health practitioners claim that aloe vera gel can promote hair growth, but this has not been scientifically proven. To try it, dab the gel on your lashes using a cotton swab, mascara wand, or your fingers.
You can take aloe vera gel straight from the plant (by squeezing it out of the leaf), or you can use aloe vera gel, which is sold at most drug stores. It is especially good to use in the hot months as a substitute for oil
Step 3. Use garlic for internal and external use
Research shows that garlic can help promote hair growth. One study showed that patients who applied garlic topically to bald patches saw results within 2 to 4 weeks.
- Garlic pills are available at most health food stores, and many pharmacies. Garlic cream or gel may be harder to find, so check with your doctor or dermatologist if you can't find them easily at the pharmacy.
- Do not apply garlic directly to the eyelashes, as this will cause irritation. What's more, it will make you smell like garlic.
Method 5 of 5: Using Petroleum Jelly to Make Longer Lashes
Step 1. Find out why petroleum jelly can help with eyelash growth
In fact, there is no scientific evidence to substantiate the long-standing claim that petroleum jelly can promote eyelash growth, but many people claim to have used it successfully.
Many people believe that petroleum jelly's effect on eyelash growth is due to its moisturizing properties, which can improve the condition of the hair, making it stronger and therefore less prone to breakage before reaching its full potential length
Step 2. Know the risks
Petroleum jelly (also known as petrolatum) is generally considered safe, however, recent concerns have been raised about the risk of contamination with cancer-causing chemicals present in the oil that is the source of petrolatum.
- Some people avoid using petrolatum not because of health concerns, but ethical concerns, because petrolatum is sourced from oil, which is not a renewable resource.
- Allergic reactions to petroleum jelly are rare but possible, so use them with caution. In addition, because petroleum jelly is oily, there is also a risk that applying it to the eyelashes can cause the pores on the eyelids and the lash line to become clogged, causing irritation or hordeolum.
Step 3. Buy petroleum jelly
Vaseline is a popular brand, but you can also get an unbranded version. If you don't want to use petroleum jelly, you can buy a non-petroleum version at a health food store like Healthy Choice. A synthetic version is also available.
You can also make your own non-petroleum jelly by mixing 1/8 cup (about 28 grams) of beeswax and 1/2 cup olive oil in a small saucepan, melting them together on low heat or over a double boiler. then pour the mixture into a bottle to cool it
Step 4. Buy a mascara or cotton wand
You can find both at drugstores, beauty supply stores, and single-price stores.
- If you prefer mascara wands but don't want to buy one, you can even visit a store that sells cosmetics and ask for one of the disposable mascara wands that are used to try out products and apply make-up at the shop's make-up sessions.
- If you do get a disposable mascara wand, be sure to clean it after each use with a gentle cleanser (baby shampoo works) and lukewarm water.
Step 5. Clean the eyelids and eyelashes
Use a gentle, unscented cleanser to clean the eyelids and eyelashes, and make sure not to rub or apply too much pressure. This will ensure that the eyelids are free of dust such as makeup residue.
Step 6. Apply petroleum jelly to the eyelashes
Dip a cotton swab in petroleum jelly and apply it along your lash line like you would with eyeliner, avoiding your eyes. Then place a small amount of petroleum jelly on your finger and rub your thumb and forefinger on your lashes.
You can also apply petroleum jelly to your lashes using a clean mascara wand just as you would mascara
Step 7. Apply petroleum jelly before bed or use it instead of mascara
Applying petroleum jelly before bed will allow the jelly to seep into your lashes without a hitch. You can also use it in place of mascara. The effect won't be as dramatic as mascara looks, but it will enhance the look of your lashes.
Some people suggest applying petroleum jelly before applying mascara to keep your lashes moisturised and to make your mascara last longer, while others claim that petroleum jelly will make your mascara smudge
Step 8. Repeat at least 3 times a week
If you only apply it before bed, try repeating the process at least 3 times a week.
Step 9. Make sure you clean it thoroughly from your eyelids and eyelashes
Use a gentle cleanser to remove all the petroleum jelly from your eyelashes and eyelids.
Step 10. Don't use petroleum jelly all the time on your eyelashes
You must give rest to the eyelids and eyelashes. Otherwise, you run the risk of clogging your pores, which will cause your eyelashes to fall out or at least stop their growth.
- If you're wearing it instead of mascara, don't wear it at night.
- If you wear it at night, don't wear it all day.
Step 11. Wait 2 to 4 weeks to see the difference
A common claim is that petroleum jelly can make your lashes look longer and thicker. You will be able to see the difference within a few weeks of using it, as long as you use it regularly.
Although many people claim that petroleum jelly works to give thicker and longer eyelashes, no scientific research has been done to prove that such claims are true
Tips
- If you need to wear mascara, choose a mascara that contains a growth formula. The Lash Accelerator from the Rimmel brand is a popular choice.
- There are many serums available in the market that claim to promote eyelash growth. It's important to read online reviews before buying mascara, as not all of them work equally well, and some can even cause irritation or an allergic reaction.
Warning
- The eyes and the skin around the eye area are sensitive. If you experience any irritation from the treatment you are applying to your eyelashes, stop immediately. If irritation persists long after you stop treatment, see a doctor.
- If you suffer from hordeolum or other eyelid related problems, be very careful about what you apply to your eyelids and eyelashes. If you're unsure what to use on your eyelids and eyelashes, because of any health concerns you may have, talk to your doctor or dermatologist.
- Applying oil in the area around the eyes can cause puffiness and dark circles under the eyes. Keeping your eye area well cleaned will help prevent this from happening.
