This wikiHow teaches you how to create and use a MEGA cloud storage account. MEGA storage space allows you to store files with a total size of up to 50 GB for free.
Step
Part 1 of 6: Creating an Account
Step 1. Go to the MEGA website
Visit https://mega.nz/ via your computer's web browser.
Step 2. Click Create an account
It's a red button in the middle of the page. After that, the account creation page will open.
Step 3. Enter the account details
Fill in the following text fields:
- “First Name” and “Last Name” - Enter your first and last name.
- “E-Mail” - Enter an email address that is active and still accessible.
- “Password” - Type in a strong account password.
- "Retype Password" - Type the password again to make sure the two passwords you typed are the same or match.
Step 4. Check the box "I agree with the MEGA Terms of Service"
This box is at the bottom of the page.
Step 5. Click Create Account
It's at the bottom of the page. After that, your MEGA account will be created.
Step 6. Verify the account
In order to access your account, you will need to verify your email address by following these steps:
- Open the inbox of the email address you typed into the " E-Mail " text field earlier and log into your email account if necessary.
- Click the message with the subject " MEGA Email Verification Required ” from "MEGA".
- Click the button " Verify my email ” is red in the main body of the message.
Step 7. Enter the password
In the " Password " text field in the middle of the page, type the MEGA account password.
Step 8. Click Confirm your account
It's a red button below the "Password" text field. You will be taken to the account plan selection page.
Step 9. Click FREE
This option is on the left side of the page. Once clicked, the free MEGA plan will be selected and you will be taken to the MEGA repository page. On this page, you can start creating folders and uploading files.
Part 2 of 6: Creating Folders
Step 1. Click New Folder
It's in the top-right corner of the MEGA page. After that, a pop-up window will be displayed.
Step 2. Enter the folder name
Type the name you want to assign to the folder in the text field in the pop-up window.
Step 3. Click Create
It's at the bottom of the pop-up window. The new folder will appear in the center of the MEGA window.
Step 4. Open the folder
Double-click the folder to open it.
You can open any folder stored in your MEGA account this way
Step 5. Revisit the main MEGA storage space page
Click the cloud icon in the upper-left corner of the page to return.
Step 6. Change the appearance of the file
Click the button ☰ ” in the upper right corner of the page to see a vertical list of folders or files in an existing directory, or click “ ⋮⋮⋮ ” in the top right corner of the page to see a grid of file icons.
Step 7. Use the folder option
Hover over the folder and click the “ ⋯ ” when displayed, then select one of the following options as needed:
- ” Rename ” - This option allows you to rename the folder.
- ” Move ” - With this option, you can open a menu to move the folder to a different location.
- ” Copy ” - This option works to copy the folder and its contents. The copied folder can be pasted in any storage directory in the MEGA window.
- ” Remove ” - This option sends the selected folder to “Rubbish Bin”.
Part 3 of 6: Uploading Files
Step 1. Open the folder if necessary
If you want to upload files to a specific folder in the MEGA storage space, first open the respective folder by double-clicking on it.
Step 2. Click File Upload
It's in the top-right corner of the page.
If you want to upload a folder including all its contents, click “ Upload Folder ”.
Step 3. Select the file you want to upload
Go to the file's location on your computer, then single-click the file you want to upload.
To select multiple files at once, hold down Ctrl (Windows) or Command (Mac) while clicking each file that you want to select
Step 4. Click Open
It's in the lower-right corner of the window. The selected files will be uploaded to the MEGA account.
If you uploaded the entire folder, click the button “ Upload ”.
Step 5. Wait for the file to finish uploading
This process can take a few seconds to several hours, depending on your internet network speed and file size.
Step 6. Delete the file if necessary
If you want to delete files from your MEGA account, you can move them to the “Rubbish Bin”:
- Select the file using the mouse cursor.
- Click " ⋯ ” in the lower right corner of the file.
- Click " Remove ” in the displayed drop-down menu.
- Click " Yes ' when prompted.
Step 7. Empty the “Rubbish Bin”
Click the " Rubbish Bin " icon which looks like a triangle made of arrows. This icon appears in the lower-left corner of the window. After that, click on the option “ Clear the rubbish bin ” in the top right corner of the page, and select “ Empty ' when prompted.
Part 4 of 6: Downloading Files
Step 1. Find the file you want to download
Go to the directory that contains the file you want to download.
For example, if the file is stored in a folder, open the folder first
Step 2. Select the file
Single-click the file you want to download. After that, the file will be selected.
- If you're using grid view, make sure you click the file icon, and not the name.
- You can select multiple files by holding down Ctrl (Windows) or Command (Mac) while clicking each file you want to download.
Step 3. Click
It's in the lower-right corner of the file (in grid view) or the far right of the file name (list view). A drop-down menu will appear after that.
Step 4. Select Download…
This option is in the drop-down menu. A pop-out menu will appear after that.
Step 5. Select the download option
On the pop-out menu, click “ Standard Download ” to download the file “as is” (according to its type or appearance), or “ Download as ZIP ” to download the file as a ZIP folder. The selected file will be downloaded immediately.
Part 5 of 6: File Sharing
Step 1. Find the file or folder that you want to share
Go to the file or folder that you want to share with other MEGA users.
Step 2. Select the file or folder
Click the icon of the file or folder that you want to share.
Step 3. Click
It's in the lower-right corner of the file icon (in grid view) or the far right of the file name (in list view). A drop-down menu will appear after that.
Step 4. Click Sharing
This option is in the drop-down menu. After that, the “Sharing” pop-up window will be displayed.
Step 5. Enter the email address
Type the address of the user with whom you want to share the file or folder in the text field in the middle of the pop-up window.
You can add additional email addresses by pressing the Tab key after each address entered
Step 6. Select sharing permissions
Click the box Read-only, then select one of the following options:
- ” Read-only ” - The user with whom you share a file or folder can only view the content you share, but cannot edit that content.
- ” Read & Write ” - The shared user can view and edit the shared content.
- ” Full access ” - The shared user can view, edit, delete and download the shared content.
Step 7. Click Done
It's in the lower-right corner of the window. The share link will be sent to the email address you added.
Recipients must have a MEGA account in order to open, view, edit, and/or download files or folders that you share
Part 6 of 6: Using the MEGA Mobile App
Step 1. Download the MEGA app
MEGA has a free mobile app available for iPhone and Android platforms. To download it, open the app
App Store on iPhone or
Google Play Store on an Android device, then follow these steps:
- iPhone - Touch option “ Search ”, touch the search bar, type mega cloud storage, touch the “ Search, and touch the button “ GET ” to the right of the "MEGA" heading. Scan for Touch ID or enter your Apple ID password when prompted.
- Android - Touch the search bar, type mega cloud, select “ MEGA ” from the search results, touch the button “ INSTALL, and select " ACCEPT ' when prompted.
Step 2. Open MEGA
Touch the MEGA app icon which looks like the letter “M” above the white circle. The MEGA login page will be displayed.
Step 3. Sign in using your account information
Type the email address and password for the account into the appropriate text fields, then tap the “ Login ” to log into MEGA account.
On the Android device, touch the “ LOGIN ” before entering your account login information.
Step 4. Grant permission for the app
If prompted to allow MEGA to use the camera, photo data, and/or other services on the phone, touch the “ OK " or " Allow ' when prompted.
If prompted to allow automatic video uploads, touch “ Skip " to continue.
Step 5. Create a folder
You can create a new empty folder in the MEGA storage space by following these steps:
- Touch " ⋯" or " ⋮ ” in the upper right corner of the screen.
- Touch " New Folder ” (iPhone) or “ Create new folder (Android).
- Enter a folder name.
- Touch " Create ”.
Step 6. Upload the file
Just like on the desktop platform, you can upload files to the MEGA storage via your smartphone or tablet:
- Touch the button “ ⋯" or " ⋮ ” in the upper right corner of the screen.
- Touch " Upload ”.
- Choose a directory.
- Select file.
- Touch the button “ Upload ” to upload the file if it doesn't upload automatically once selected.
Step 7. Move the content to “Rubbish Bin”
This feature is the MEGA version of the " Trash " feature. To delete content, follow these steps:
- Touch and hold the content until a check mark appears next to it.
- Tap the “Rubbish Bin” icon in the lower right corner of the screen (on Android devices, tap “ ⋮" and select " Move to rubbish bin ” from the drop-down menu).
- Touch " OK ” when prompted (on Android devices, touch “ REMOVE ”).
Step 8. Empty the “Rubbish Bin”
If you have already moved the content to the “Rubbish Bin”, you can empty it with the following steps:
- Touch the button “ ⋯ ” in the upper right corner of the screen (on Android devices, touch “ RUBBISH BIN ” at the top of the screen, then skip the next step).
- Touch " Rubbish Bin ” in the drop-down menu.
- Touch " Skip ” if asked to upgrade (upgrade) account.
- Select content by touching the tick icon in the top right corner of the screen and selecting each content you want to delete (on Android devices, touch and hold the content to select it).
- Touch the icon “ Trash ” in the lower right corner of the screen (on Android devices, touch the “ X ” in the upper right corner of the screen).
- Touch " OK ” when prompted (on Android devices, touch “ REMOVE ”).
Step 9. Share files with other users
Unlike on desktop platforms, you need to copy the file link and send it directly to another user who has a MEGA account:
- Touch and hold the file until a check mark appears next to it.

- Touch " agree ' when prompted.
- Touch " Copy link ” (on Android devices, touch “ COPY ”).
- Paste the link in a text, email, or message to share it with the recipient of the message.
