So you want indie style? It's easy, just be yourself, because that's the key to being an indie. However, there are a few guidelines you should follow when it comes to dressing in an indie style, such as avoiding mainstream brands or wearing headphones.
Step
Part 1 of 3: Mastering the Basics
Step 1. Be yourself
Being indie means being independent, because that's where the name indie comes from. It means you do something on your own decision and desire. Whatever fashion trends that exist now, past, and in the future, you don't care and still dress according to what you want and like. So, if you really like to dress the way you want, then you already have an indie mentality.
Just make sure that you like what you are wearing. Others may criticize and laugh at you. But don't worry, because the one who knows what's best for you is you
Step 2. Avoid well-known or mainstream brands
One of the things that proves that you're indie is avoiding famous brands. An indie person will not use expensive clothes or accessories from famous brands, and prefer to use goods with cheaper local brands. After all, if a local and/or cheaper brand can provide the same quality at a much lower price, why not?
But again, do what you want. If you really like one or two styles that were mainstream at the time, use them. What is clear, do not follow the trend if you feel uncomfortable or do not like
Step 3. Using old stuff
Being indie means appreciating everything that's good, and everything that's good never gets old, unlike trends that are always changing. Therefore, an indie usually appreciates vintage items and never gets old. If you find something from the 70s or 80s that you like, use it. If the item used to be considered cool and good, it means it's still good now.
Whatever the item, ask yourself again: do you like it? Just remember that rule at all times, and you should know how to be an indie
Step 4. Mix different styles if you like
Since you are free to do as you please, mix things up however you like. If you like and feel confident wearing these mixed styles, go for them.
Don't think too much about labels or what people think of one or two of the things you wear. If you feel it can reflect your identity, why not
Step 5. Don't trust the hype too much
You will probably often see or read on the internet about what indie is and what they (should) use. Whatever the crowd says, even if it's your friend, if you don't really like that style, just ignore it. Or if you want to express your own opinion about what you like to wear.
Part 2 of 3: Adding Accessories
Step 1. Layer your clothes
If it's cold outside, wear a cardigan or vest or whatever you like to keep you warmer.
You're free to mix up styles if you like
Step 2. Complete with jewelry or other accessories
You can wear anything that suits you and you like, from a wooden bracelet, or a pocket watch to a necklace, whatever. What is clear is that you like and feel suitable to use it.
- Try unpacking your warehouse or looking for something interesting at a thrift store. Who knows you might find something you like
- Some accessories such as scarves, headbands, or sling bags are suitable for use by both men and women.
Step 3. Wear any shoes, as long as they fit your feet
You are free to use any shoes. But, if you want shoes with a certain style, try some of these shoes:
- Vans Authentics is the safest choice because it has many color variations.
- Moccasins are an important shoe for an indie to have because they give your outfit a unique and vintage feel. The colors and designs also vary, and are suitable for use with any model of clothing.
- Nike Dunks are popular because they give off a nostalgic feel, and often have limited edition prints. In addition, these shoes are suitable for use with anything. Some people may not want to use these shoes because they are a bit mainstream. But if you have extra cash, try looking for the Nike SB Dunk or Nike iD Dunk.
- Sanuks are also a good choice because they come in many styles and colors and are easy to find in stores.
- For women, flatshoes with the appropriate model and pattern or color of choice are definitely suitable. Platform shoes or gladiator sandals are also great options if you want to vary your look every day.
Part 3 of 3: Final Touches
Step 1. Make your own clothes
There's nothing more independent and original than using something you've made yourself. If you can sew, start making your own clothes. If you don't have the time or aren't skilled enough to make clothes, try adding extra touches to existing clothes. Maybe you can turn old clothes that are not so attractive to be cool again.
There are many ways to add a touch to your clothes besides sewing, from screen printing, knitting, lace, and the like
Step 2. Dress according to the weather
When the weather is very cold, wear a jacket or coat. If it's not too cold, wear a cardigan. Or use a T-shirt if the weather is a bit hot. Choose a color and pattern that you like.
The point is to wear clothes that match the weather. Don't push yourself into a style that's uncomfortable to wear in hot weather
Step 3. Be eco-friendly
An indie knows what's good and what's not for the environment. If they find a used item that is still worth using, then they will use it. That's why thrift stores are such a great place. So don't throw away your clothes. Donate. Then look for used clothes that are still good or make your own, and don't want to be dictated by current fashion trends.
You may also choose not to wear clothing that uses animal skin or fur. So, find out what your clothes are made of before you buy them
Step 4. Be proud of your hairstyle
Whatever the shape, leave your hair as it is. No need to spend hours setting it up. After all, what's wrong with the shape of your hair? Be proud of the hair you have.
That doesn't mean you can't style it at all. If you really want to cut it, cut it. The point is not to change the shape and natural color of your hair, such as from curling it to straight, or dyeing it brown
Step 5. Use headphones
One thing that is attached to indie is that they always pay attention to music. So go for a pretty cool pair of headphones.
Once you have headphones, try searching for songs from underground bands and such. Most indie people didn't listen to the songs that were popular at the time and had their own choice of music
Tips
- Listen to indie music. Musicians from well-known labels are often forced to change their musical style in order to sell well in the market. Independent labels on the other hand have more authentic music.
- Use makeup that is not tested on animals. Use makeup that is not tested on animals and also uses natural ingredients.
- Embrace the spirit of recycling. Use used items that are still good. Give your used clothes a few touches so they can be reused. Or if your friend asks for it, give it. Or if not, resell or donate, or exchange for someone else's. Buy clothes from recycled materials. Selling used CDs that can still be used. Use a damaged CD to get creative and make something that can be of use to you.
- Remember, even in indie communities and genres there are many ways and styles of dressing. Because the essence of indie is to wear clothes that you like and show your special identity.
- One great way to become indie is to buy vinyl or records. Many foreign artists release their music on LPs. After all, having a unique collection is certainly proud, isn't it?
- Buy items like t-shirts or pins that support animal rights, social justice, vegetarianism, and the environment. Increase your concern.
- Converse shoes are not the best choice for indie fashion because they have become very mainstream. If you have converse shoes, add some unique touches to your shoes to make them look different.
- As often as possible, wear sandals, especially if the weather is hot.
Warning
- Indie comes from the word independent. Find out who you are, wear, buy, say, and act the way you want. That is true independence. Don't let other people's opinions control your choices. Be yourself, and others will admire you for it.
- Also, don't label yourself. If other people ask you to label yourself, don't answer or answer "yourself" or anything like that. You are not imitating or trying to imitate anyone.
- Don't show off when you're new to the indie style, or you'll end up being seen as tacky or fake. Remember, be yourself, and over time, you'll have a natural style.
