Eggs are a great ingredient to use in many recipes. With their fragile shells, eggs are bound to (accidentally) fall and break once in a while. Because of their slippery and sticky texture, cleaning raw eggs has always been considered a disgusting job. However, with salt, cleaning will be easier. When eggs are cracked and spilled, a few easy steps using household items can make cleaning up those slimy egg spills a lot easier.

Step 1. Sprinkle salt on the spilled egg

Sprinkle enough salt to cover the entire area of the egg spill (about a handful of salt). The salt makes the sticky eggs stick to the salt and makes cleaning the eggs a lot easier.

  • Any type of salt can be used. You can use iodized table salt or kosher salt.
  • Animals can be attracted to the spilled raw egg. If you have pets, you may need to keep them away from the spill.

Step 2. Let the eggs absorb the salt

Let the salt sit for 10-15 minutes. This will ensure that the salt thickens the majority of the sticky eggs and makes cleaning easier.

A slice of bread can also be used to absorb the spilled egg if there happens to be no salt

Step 3. Clean and throw away the raw egg

Use a tissue or spatula to place the salt-covered egg onto the newspaper. Compared to dustpans, newsprint is a good choice for cleaning because the newsprint can be thrown away with the eggs.

Step 4. Clean up the spill area

Use a disinfectant to clean any surface or area that the raw egg came in contact with.
