Here's a simple way to apply latex paint smoothly and evenly on your interior walls. With this tool, you can get your work done quickly and common problems such as overexposed areas, roller marks, and paint deposits can be prevented.
Step
Step 1. Buy professional-quality tools that last a lifetime versus cheap tools that break down quickly
- Start with a good roller pin.
- Attach a 1.2 meter long wooden handle or extension post to the end of the roller to increase your reach.
- Buy a good roller cover (also known as a sleeve). While it's tempting to buy a cheap cover that you can throw away right after you're done, a cover that doesn't hold a lot of paint doesn't do as well. You are forced to work twice and the result is not as good as a good quality cover. Use 1.2 cm fleece fabric (nap) for flat surfaces such as walls and ceilings, 2 cm fleece fabric for rough surfaces such as textured walls, and 0.5 cm fleece fabric for satin and semi-gloss paints. Read the “Tips” section to learn how to properly care for your equipment.
- Professionals rarely use paint trays to paint very large areas. A 20 liter bucket with a special bucket screen that hangs over the edge is more effective because the roller cover is easier to load, easier to move, and less prone to tripping or being stepped on. If you need a break, simply cover it with a damp towel to prevent the paint from drying.
- Paint trays are more suitable for small areas such as bedrooms because they usually only need about 4 liters of paint. The roller tray also makes cleaning easier. Use tray liners for easier cleaning.
Step 2. Apply paint around the edges first using a brush
Since the roller can't reach the narrow edges, you'll first need to paint along the ceiling, the inside of the corner, and the molding (where the floor and wall meet) with a brush.
Step 3. Apply paint on the wall with a wiping motion
Start painting at 30 cm from the floor, and 15 cm from the corner, and rub at a slight angle upward using light pressure. Stop a few inches from the ceiling. Now, run the roller up and down towards the corners to quickly spread the paint. You can ignore the paint deposits and roller marks for now because it's not time to perfect the look of the wall paint.
Step 4. Refill paint on the roller and repeat the above process on the other side, working towards the painted area
Keep the edges wet as this is the key to a successful high-quality painting, whether you're applying enamel to doors, varnishing to furniture, or painting walls. The goal here is to plan the sequence of operations and work fast enough so that the new paint can be superimposed on the old paint while it is still wet. If you stop halfway and go back to painting when the old paint is dry, a mark will appear where the paint overlaps.
Step 5. Scroll over the entire area until the paint appears smooth and even on the wall
At this stage, do not refill paint on the roller. Use very light pressure and roll the roller up and down from floor to ceiling, moving the roller to of the previous paint stroke so that your stroke slightly overlaps the previous roll each time. When you reach a corner, roll the roller as close to the wall next to it as possible without touching it.
Step 6. Spread the paint on the ceiling using long horizontal strokes without refilling the paint on the roller
Wipe as close as you can. This “cutting” process leaves a brush mark that will not match the texture of the roller on the entire surface of the wall. For best results, we recommend covering as much of the brush mark as possible using a roller. To do this, carefully roll the roller closer to the inside of the corners, moldings, and ceiling. -the ceiling. Face the open end of the roller toward the rim and do not use a roller that is completely wet with paint. If you are skilled enough to roll the roller vertically and stop about 2 cm from the ceiling, skip this step.
Step 7. Scrape paint off the roller before washing
Use a putty knife, or a special roller scraper that has a semicircle cut in the blade. The “5-in-1” tool for painters is ideal for this stage.
Step 8. Wash the rollers with warm water and detergent
Foam the rollers and rub the cloth as if you were bathing a short-haired dog. The detergent will remove any paint residue from the roller fabric and make the next step easier.
Step 9. Rinse the roller cover until the rinse water is clear
Rollers and paint brushes, which can be purchased at paint and hardware stores, will make this process easier. Just slip the roller cover into the dial and rinse and spin the roller into an empty bucket repeatedly until it's clean.
Tips
- If you have to finish painting another time, wrap the roller you used to paint in a plastic bag. In addition, you should also put it in the refrigerator. The refrigerator will maintain the condition of the rollers and can be used directly to paint.
- Place a damp washcloth in the bag and pick up any visible lumps on the wall.
- The easiest way to keep your paint clean is to prepare a white plastic trash bag with a yellow handle (when the handle is pulled, the bag will close), flip it so it's inside out, and slide it onto the roller tray. Tie a yellow handle around the tray's "legs"; when today's work is done, you can put the paint roller back in the tray, then pull the bag out of the tray, flip it over so the inside of the bag is back facing in, and tie the handles tight. If done correctly, the paint will still remain wet and the roller can be reused the next day. Also, you don't need to clean the roller tray.
- To minimize shedding, cover the new roller cover with masking tape and peel off to remove loose fabric. Repeat several times. You can also use a lighter to slightly burn off any visible "fluff".
- Paint tray coatings can be purchased at retail stores. Buy as many as 10 pieces to throw away immediately after use so that the cleaning process is easy.
- Remove any dust or debris from the surface before starting to paint.
- High-quality wool covers tend to wrinkle if you press too hard while painting. Roller scrolling requires a light touch. No matter what type of roller cover you use, always let the paint do its work. Keep the roller moistened with paint and use sufficient pressure to apply and spread the paint evenly. Pressing the rollers until they squeeze will only cause problems. Start with a large “V” or “W” shape, then fill in the middle. Smooth it in an up and down motion. Look briefly to make sure there's no dripping paint.
- If you see roller marks (vertical paint streaks), flip the roller in the opposite direction and roll again on the painted surface (for latex, within 10 minutes).
- Strain the used paint using a gauze sieve to remove lumps. You can buy a 20 liter filter at a hardware store.
- Cover the bucket with a damp cloth when not in use.
- If the partially dry paint sloughs off the screen, remove it and clean it.
