This article describes how to design a monogram with Microsoft Word. Once you've designed it, you can save the monogram as an example (template) or image to use in other documents, such as an invitation or business card. The following steps work in Word on Mac computers as well, and the common techniques used can also be applied to other programs, such as Adobe Illustrator or Pages for Mac computers.
Step
Part 1 of 3: Designing a Monogram
Step 1. Open Microsoft Word
Step 2. Click the Insert menu, and then click WordArt
A WordArt text box is added to the Word document.
Step 3. Delete the WordArt text, then type the largest letter you want on the monogram
Step 4. Change the font to Lucida Handwriting
This typeface belongs to the standard font system on Windows and Mac computers.
You can use any typeface in this step
Step 5. With the text selected, change the font size to the largest
- When you increase the font size, the size of the WordArt box does not always increase. Click and drag the edge of the WordArt box outwards until you can see the full letter.
- If you want the letters to be even larger, type a number, such as 200 in the Font Size box.
Step 6. Add two more WordArt letters, but make them at least half the size of the first letter
You can change the font size at any time, but changing the WordArt text box will not change the font size
Step 7. Click and drag the letters around until you know how the letters look
Move the mouse over the WordArt until you see four arrows added to the mouse cursor, then click and drag to move the WordArt.
You can also move WordArt using the keyboard. Click the WordArt box, and then press the arrow keys to move the WordArt
Step 8. Change the Wordart style format
On the Format tab in the Text Styles section, Word gives you the option to change the WordArt style.
- Click the Quick Styles button to choose from a gallery of WordArt styles.
- Click the arrow in the Fill drop-down menu to select the color to fill in the WordArt. This option will change the color of the inner outline of the letter.
- Click the arrows in the Line Style drop-down menu to change the outline color for letters, line thickness, or add other line effects.
- Click the Effects button to add effects, such as shadows and reflections to WordArt.
Step 9. If you make a change that you don't like, press CTRL + Z to undo it
Part 2 of 3: Adding Additional Style to the Monogram
Step 1. Add shapes around the monogram
Often, monograms are displayed on a slab that is shaped, for example, a circle or a rectangle. Click the Insert menu, then click Shape. Find the shape you want to use, then click and drag the shape into the Word document.
Step 2. Change the shape format
on the Format tab, click the Fill drop-down menu, then click No Fill. Click the Line drop-down menu arrow, then choose a color that matches the color of your letters.
Step 3. With the shape selected, click and drag the tip of the shape to make it large enough to monogram it
Step 4. Arrange the monogram letters in the shape you created until the appearance is to your liking
Part 3 of 3: Saving the Monogram as an Example
Step 1. Save the monogram
When you open a Word document that was saved as the previous example, the document that opens is a copy of that file which you can modify as you wish without worrying about the ali file. Click the File menu, then click Save As.
Step 2. Name the file, then save it
In the Save dialog box, give the monogram a name. Click the Format drop-down menu, and then click Word Template. Click Save.
