This wikiHow teaches you how to set up a font for Adobe Illustrator on a computer. You can add fonts on a Windows or Mac computer.
Step
Method 1 of 2: On Windows
Step 1. Close Illustrator if it is still open
Newly installed fonts will not appear in Illustrator if you install them while the program is running.
Step 2. Download the font you want to install if needed
If you don't already have a font you want to install, find and download it before you proceed.
- The fonts to be installed in Illustrator must be complete. This means that you must include italic, bold, and underlined templates, as well as the full alphabet of upper and lower case letters.
- Fonts can be downloaded in. OTF,. PFP,. TFF, and. TTF formats.
Step 3. Go to Start
Do this by clicking on the Windows logo in the lower-left corner.
Step 4. Open File Explorer
Click the folder-shaped icon at the bottom left of the Start window.
Step 5. Open the ZIP folder of the font you want to install
Click the folder in which the font ZIP file is stored (e.g. the Downloads) in the left column of File Explorer.
You may have to open an additional folder in its main window to find the ZIP folder
Step 6. Click the font ZIP folder
The folder will be selected.
Step 7. Click Extract
This tab is at the top of the File Manager window. This will bring up the toolbar under the tab Extract.
Step 8. Click Extract all which is on the right side of the toolbar
Step 9. Click Extract when prompted
The folder will extract itself into a regular folder.
Step 10. Wait for the font file to finish extracting
When finished, the folder containing the extracted fonts will be opened. This means you can interact with the font file now.
Step 11. Double-click the font file
Doing so will open a window showing the font preview.
Step 12. Click Install
This option is at the top of the preview window. The selected font will be installed in any application that uses fonts on the computer, including Illustrator.
If there are separate font files for bold, italic, and other sections, you'll need to double-click the file and install each section in order for the font to work in Illustrator
Method 2 of 2: On Mac
Step 1. Make sure you have closed all applications
All text or image editing programs must be closed before you can add fonts to your Mac. Some of the applications that should be closed include:
- Adobe Illustrator
- Pages
- Microsoft Office Apps
Step 2. Download the font you want to install if needed
If you don't already have a font you want to install, find and download it before you proceed.
- The fonts to be installed in Illustrator must be complete. This means that you must include italic, bold, and underlined templates, as well as the full alphabet of upper and lower case letters.
- The types of fonts that can be used on Mac computers include. DFONT,. TTC,. OTF, PostScript,. TTF, and Multiple Master.
Step 3. Launch Finder
This blue face-shaped app is in the Mac's Dock.
Step 4. Open the location where you want to save the font you want to install
Click the folder used to store the font files on the left side of the Finder, then open the font file folder.
If the font file is not in a folder, just go to the location where the font file is stored
Step 5. Select the font file
Click the font file that you want to install.
If the font consists of multiple files (eg for " Italic ", " Bold ", etc.), select each file by holding down Command and clicking each font file
Step 6. Click Edit
This menu is in the top left of the screen. A drop-down menu will be displayed.
Step 7. Click Copy
This option is in the drop-down menu Edit. The font file will be copied.
Step 8. Click Go
This menu is on your Mac's menu bar. Another drop-down menu will open.
Step 9. Click Go to Folder
This option is at the bottom of the drop-down menu Go.
Step 10. Type /System/Library and press Return
Folders Library on a Mac computer will open.
Step 11. Double click Fonts
This folder holds fonts for all Mac programs, including Illustrator.
Step 12. Click on Edit which is on the menu bar
Step 13. Click Paste Items
Your font file will be pasted into the folder Fonts.
If you are copying multiple files, click Paste Items As a replacement.
Step 14. Restart the Mac computer
Click the Apple menu
choose Restart…, then click Restart when requested. Once your Mac finishes restarting, you can start Illustrator and use the newly installed fonts.
