There are two ways to reboot an iPhone: via hard reset and factory reset. If your device freezes or breaks, it would be great if you try to do hard reset on the device, and if a hard reset doesn't work for your problem then try factory reset, which restores the phone to the factory default settings. Factory reset should only be used as a last resort. You can take your iPhone to an Apple Store for a Genius Bar meeting before doing a factory reset, as it can cause permanent data loss.
Step
Method 1 of 2: Performing a Hard Reset
Step 1. Press and hold the Home button (the big circle at the bottom of the screen) and the Sleep/Wake button (at the top of the iPhone) at the same time
Step 2. Keep holding both buttons until iPhone turns off and starts restarting
This process will take about 15 to 60 seconds.
Ignore the request to turn off the phone. If you turn off your phone, you don't do a hard reset. To continue until the hard reset is performed, keep holding both buttons at the same time
Step 3. You can release the button when the silver Apple logo has been displayed
You have successfully completed the hard reset process.
Step 4. Don't panic if it takes a long time to load from the Apple logo to the main screen
This is a normal thing.
Method 2 of 2: Performing a Factory Reset
Step 1. Connect iPhone with computer via USB
The computer you use must be a computer that has previously been used to back up or sync with your iPhone, so you can restore most of your data.
Step 2. Open iTunes
When the device is connected, an "iPhone" button will appear on the left side or top left corner (depending on the iTunes version used) which can be used to access the phone's settings. Click the button. Click the "Summary" tab in the top navigation bar.
Step 3. Back up iPhone data, if possible, by clicking on "Back Up Now"
iPhone may automatically back up data when connected to a computer, and if that happens, wait for the data backup process to complete. If your iPhone is seriously damaged, this process may not restore any additional data, but it's worth a try.
Step 4. When the data backup process is complete, do a factory reset
Tap the "Settings" app on the iPhone. Press "General," then "Reset." On the next screen, select "Erase All Content and Settings."
- Wait until the factory reset process is complete. This process may take up to an hour.
- Make sure that the phone is working after going through the reset. If your phone is still having issues, take it to an Apple Store for inspection.
Step 5. Restore phone data with the last data backup
With your iPhone connected via USB, right-click on the device name in iTunes, then select "Restore from Backup." You can then select the data backup to be used to restore the data.
- Alternatively, Click the "Restore" button on the Summary page in iTunes.
- It is possible that an app or some data from a previous data backup is causing the problem with the phone. If your phone has problems again after it was restored with a data backup, then try an earlier version of the data backup again. If you're still having problems, do a factory reset, but don't restore any data, or discuss this with an Apple Genius Bar employee.
