Most people think that connecting a computer to a TV is a difficult thing. The large screen makes it easy for you to enjoy media, listen to music, play games, and edit pictures and videos with your computer.
Step
Step 1. Find the output port on your computer
- Most new computers have HDMI (high-definition multimedia interface) ports. The image above shows the HDMI port on the right. This port is thinner than the USB port.
- VGA port is square with 15 pins. On the right of the image, you can see an example of a VGA port.
-
The DVI port is square with 24 pins. On the right of the image, you can see an example of a DVI port.
VGA and DVI ports are very similar in shape. To tell the difference, count the number of pins on the port. To use both ports to connect a computer and a TV, you will need an adapter
- The S-Video port is round with 4 or 7 pins. On the right of the image, you can see an example of an S-Video port.
Step 2. Find the input port on your TV
In the TV image on the right, you can see the various input ports on the TV. The input port is indicated by a colored arrow. Know which ports are available on your TV. Purple Arrow: HDMI Port. Red Arrow: S-Video Port. Orange Arrow: HDMI Component Port. Green Arrow: RCA Component Port.
Step 3. Get the appropriate cable with the available port
- If your computer and TV have HDMI ports, all you need to do is purchase an HDMI cable.
- If your computer has a VGA or DVI port, and your TV has an HDMI/HDMI Component port, you can purchase a special cable. The right side of the image above shows the shape of the cable you should buy.
- If your computer has a VGA or DVI port, and your TV does not have an HDMI/HDMI Component port, you will need to purchase the appropriate adapter cable. You can buy three types of adapter cables, namely RCA Component (yellow, red, and white), HDMI Component (green, blue, and red), and HDMI adapter cables. Match the port type to the available output ports on the computer (VGA or DVI) and input ports on the TV (RCA or HDMI Compornent).
- If your computer and TV have S-Video ports, purchase an S-Video cable. However, if your TV does not have an S-Video port, you will need to purchase an adapter.
Step 4. Connect one end of the cable to the computer, then connect the other end of the cable to the TV
Step 5. Turn on the computer first, then turn on the TV
Once they are both on, head over to the input settings on your TV. Sometimes, the computer will immediately adjust the display settings. However, if the computer display on the TV looks strange, follow these steps to fix it.
Step 6. Open Control Panel, then click Display
Step 7. Look at the left side of the window, then click Change Display Settings.
Step 8. Click the Display menu, then select Multiple Monitors
In that window, you can also directly select the connected monitor/television.
If you want to display computer output to your TV only, you can click the Multiple Displays menu and select your TV in the list that appears. To differentiate between a TV and a monitor, click Identify. The output number will appear on each screen
Step 9. Select the display resolution by clicking the Resolution menu
Select the highest resolution your TV can display. To find out the resolution supported by the TV, look for the brand and type of TV on the internet. If you are using an HDTV, choose the highest resolution. Follow these steps to perform advanced resolution adjustments on an Intel(R) HD Graphics graphics card.
Step 10. On the Display menu, click Available Display Output on: Intel(R) HD Graphics.
Step 11. Click the right corner of the page, then select the Intel (R) Graphics icon
After that, click Graphics Properties.
Step 12. Click on Display, and adjust the screen resolution until it is appropriate for your TV
Tips
- Make sure you have set the appropriate input mode on your TV. You can set the input mode with the TV remote.
- If you are using an advanced graphics card, it may provide a MiniHDMI connector (which is not shown in the image). To use it, you must purchase a MiniHDMI to HDMI adapter.
- If you're having trouble connecting your computer to your TV with a certain type of cable, try a different type of cable.
