No one seems to know for sure who invented the first Margaritas. Since there are many stories about the origin of this drink, what is known is that it has many variations. The various variations that exist make Margaritas a drink worth creating!
Step
Method 1 of 7: Making a Classic Margarita
Step 1. Prepare the following materials:
- 1 to 2 parts pure agave tequila (100%, with 1 part = 50ml)
- 1 part fresh lime feeling
- 1 part triple sec
- kosher salt or sea salt
- lime wedges for garnish
- ice
- Tabasco sauce (optional)
Step 2. Wet the rim of the glass with lime
Cut the lime into small slices and place it on the rim of the glass. After that, twist the lime wedge so that the lime juice sticks around the rim of the glass.
Step 3. Sprinkle the rim of the glass with salt
Pour a little salt (either sea or kosher) on a plate. Then, invert your glass and place the glass in a plate so that the salt sticks to the rim of the glass that was previously smeared with lime juice. Carefully, turn the glass back over.
- Do not immediately turn the glass vertically when you put the glass in the plate. Make sure the salt only sticks to the outside of the glass. Therefore, you need to tilt the glass slightly so that the salt only sticks to the outer walls of the glass.
- Alternatively, you can replace salt with sugar.
Step 4. Fill the cocktail shaker with ice until it is 2/3 or 3/4 filled
Use ice that is slightly larger, as smaller ice can melt faster and dilute your drink.
Step 5. Pour 1 to 2 parts tequila into a whisk
For one margarita, add 1 to 2 shots of tequila. The amount of tequila you need will depend on your taste.
You can pour 1 part tequila for the first time. If it's still not strong enough, you can add more tequila
Step 6. Put 1 part of triple sec in a shaker
For one glass of margarita, you can add 1 shot of triple sec.
Step 7. Add 1 part fresh lime juice to a whisk
For one glass of margarita, you can add 1 shot of lime juice.
Step 8. Shake quickly
Beat for (at least) 15 seconds to ensure that all the ingredients are mixed evenly.
Step 9. Pour the drink into the glass
If you like, you can add ice, but make sure you add ice to the glass before you pour the drink to avoid splashing the drink.
Step 10. Garnish your Margaritas with lime and enjoy
You can also add a few drops of Tabasco sauce if you like.
Step 11. Try experimenting with different ratios of ingredients
If you are not satisfied with the comparison of the ingredients given in this article, try the following comparisons (tequila: triple sec: lime juice):
- 3:2:1
- 3:1:1
- 7:4:3
- 8:1, 5:3 (to reduce the taste of triple sec)
Method 2 of 7: Make a Simple Margarita with 3 Ingredients
Step 1. Prepare the following materials:
- 1 to 1.5 parts fresh lime juice (1 part = 50 milliliters)
- 2 parts water
- 1 to 2 parts pure (100%) agave tequila
- 1/2 to 1 part agave nectar, or to taste
- ice
- sea salt or kosher salt
Step 2. Coat the rim of the glass with salt
First, moisten the rim of the glass with lime, then turn the glass over and attach the rim of the glass to the surface of the cup filled with salt.
Step 3. Put the lime juice in a whisk
For 1 cup of margaritas, you will need 1 to 1.5 shots of lime juice (approximately the equivalent of 2 medium or large limes).
Step 4. Add water to the shaker
For 1 glass of margarita, you need 2 shots of water. Use bottled or filtered water to ensure that there are no minerals or additives that spoil or change the taste of your drink.
Step 5. Add the tequila to the whisk
For 1 margarita, use 1 or 2 shots of tequila, depending on how strong you want the margarita to be/
Step 6. Add the agave nectar to the shaker
For this recipe, you'll need about to 1 full shot of agave nectar, according to your taste.
Step 7. Add enough ice to the shaker
Fill the shaker with more ice than liquid, so try filling the shaker 2/3 or 3/4 with ice.
Step 8. Shake quickly
Beat for (at least) 15 seconds to make sure all ingredients are well mixed.
Step 9. Remove the shaker cap
If the lid is stuck or difficult to remove, tap the bottom of the shaker with the palm of your hand.
Step 10. Pour the margarita into the glass
Step 11. Add the garnish to the glass, and enjoy your drink
You can add a lime wedge or a small umbrella as a garnish to your drink. Once done, enjoy!
Method 3 of 7: Making Frozen Margaritas from Scratch
Step 1. Prepare the following materials:
- 10 to 12 medium or large limes
- 6 to 8 medium or large lemons
- 1.5 parts tequila (1 part equals approximately 50 ml)
- 1/2 part triple sec
- salt or sugar
- ice
Step 2. First, make a sweet and sour mixture (bar mix)
Combine 240 ml of sugar and 240 ml of warm water, then stir until the sugar dissolves. After that, add 240 ml of fresh lime juice and 240 ml of lemon juice.
An alternative way to mix sugar and water is to use a bottle and shake it vigorously until the sugar dissolves in the water
Step 3. Prepare your glass
Use a lime wedge to wet the rim of the cooled glass. After that, turn the glass over and place the rim of the glass on the surface of the cup filled with coarse salt. For a sweet-savory taste, use a mixture of salt and sugar.
Step 4. Add 1.5 parts tequila to the blender
For 1 glass of margarita, you will need 1.5 shots of tequila.
Step 5. Add 1/2 of the triple sec to the blender
For this recipe, you'll need 1/2 shot of triple sec (the most popular recommendation for this drink is Cointreau).
Step 6. Add 3 parts of the mix bar to the blender
For this recipe, you'll need 3 shot bar mixes.
Step 7. Add ice and mix the ingredients
Add enough ice until the ice level is slightly above the liquid level. Mix the ingredients together until the mixture reaches a smooth (snow-like) consistency.
Step 8. Serve the drink and enjoy
You can decorate the glass with lime wedges. You can also add a squeeze of fresh lime, or squeeze it straight into the glass before drinking your margarita.
Method 4 of 7: Making Frozen Lime Margaritas
Step 1. Prepare an airtight container that can hold 2 liters of liquid
Make sure the container has a tight lid and fits in the freezer or freezer.
This recipe is based on using 180 milliliters of canned lime juice. If you use canned lime juice with a volume of 360 milliliters, the ratio of the ingredients used is still the same. However, if you don't want to make a large amount of margaritas, you may need to use only half because, if you use all of them, you will make 3 liters of margaritas
Step 2. Mix all the ingredients in an airtight container
To measure the rest of the ingredients, you can use an empty can of lime juice. Therefore, in this recipe the unit of measure used is 'cans' (1 can with a volume of about 150 to 180 milliliters). Mix the following ingredients:
- 2 cans frozen lime juice
- 6 cans of water
- 2 cans of tequila
- 1 can triple sec
Step 3. Wait for the mixture to reach a smooth, snow-like consistency
This process can take 4 hours and more. You can store the mixture in the freezer overnight and don't have to worry about the mixture freezing because the alcohol content will keep the mixture smooth.
Step 4. Prepare your glass
Before serving drinks, prepare a glass first. Coat the rim of the glass with lime juice and dip the rim of the glass in coarse salt.
Step 5. Remove the mixture from the freezer
Take an airtight container from the freezer. If the lid is difficult to open, shake the container quickly to break the ice in the container and make sure all the ingredients are well mixed.
If you can't close the container tightly and shake it around, open the lid and place the container on the table, then stir the mixture with an egg whisk
Step 6. Serve the drink into a glass using a large spoon
This recipe makes about 2 liters of margaritas. You can serve 8 to 12 glasses of margaritas, depending on the portion of the drink you want.
Method 5 of 7: Using Corona as an Alternative
Step 1. Prepare the following materials:
- 120 to 180 milliliters light beer (Corona is recommended)
- 240 milliliters gold tequila (because white tequila doesn't mix well with beer)
- triple sec to taste (the sweeter the better)
- one lime, squeeze and use only 1/4 or 1/2 of the juice
- 1 tablespoon sugar
- carbonated water
- ice cubes
Step 2. Prepare your glass
Use a lime wedge to moisten the rim of a glass that has been cooled beforehand. Then, turn the glass over and place the rim of the glass against the surface of the cup filled with coarse salt or sugar.
Keep in mind that this recipe will result in several drinks
Step 3. Put the tequila, triple sec, lime juice and sugar in a cocktail shaker
Stir, then let stand for 30 seconds to allow the sugar to dissolve more.
The amount of triple sec added will depend on your taste. For starters, add 120 milliliters of triple sec first
Step 4. Add ice and beat the mixture quickly
Fill the shaker 2/3 or 3/4 with ice. Put the lid on and shake the shaker bottle rapidly for (at least) 15 seconds.
Step 5. Pour the mixture into a glass
After all the ingredients are well mixed, remove the lid of the shaker and pour the drink into a glass that has been cooled and sprinkled with salt on the lips.
Step 6. Add beer to the glass
Add 120 to 180 milliliters of beer to the glass. For starters, you can add 120 milliliters of beer first, then taste it before you add the beer back.
Step 7. Stir and taste your Margartia
Mix all the ingredients and taste your margarita. Add or adjust the ingredients to your taste and mix again.
In this step, you can add carbonated water to the mixture to make the drink more fizzy
Step 8. Add chunks of ice to your Margaritas, stir, and enjoy
Once you're satisfied with the taste of the drink, add the ice cubes, stir, and enjoy your drink!
Method 6 of 7: Choosing the Best Ingredients
Step 1. Know the right way to choose quality tequila
Tequila has the best quality when it is 100% agave. Tequila that isn't 100% agave may contain corn syrup, sugar, and flavoring or color enhancing agents. The label usually says that the tequila is made from 100% agave.
Step 2. Find out the triple sec you want
Regular triple secs have varying alcohol content, from 15% to 40%. For a stronger margarita, opt for a triple sec with a higher alcohol content such as Cointreau (40% alcohol by volume).
- Triple sec is sold in various brands. Some popular brands are Curacao, Grand Marnier (cognac with added orange), and Cointreau.
- For a simpler margarita recipe, you don't need to add triple sec.
Step 3. Choose a good quality lime
Ripe limes have a thin, shiny and smooth skin. When you touch or rub the skin, it will smell a strong citrus aroma.
- For a more authentic Mexican flavor, use key limes as they are more tart and bitter than large Persian limes.
- Alternatively, use a squeeze of lime (Meyer's sweet lime is recommended!) for a milder flavor.
Step 4. Use a quality sweetener
Common sweeteners used in making margaritas are agave nectar (if you can't find it in supermarkets, you may find it at a health grocery store), simple syrup, and honey.
- You can make your own simple syrup by mixing water and sugar in a bowl, and shaking it, or by heating the sugar and water in a saucepan until the sugar dissolves. The ratio of sugar and water that can be used is 1.5 to 2:1, depending on your taste.
- You don't have to add sweeteners. Some people don't even use sweeteners at all and just use orange liquor as a sweetener.
Step 5. Use a fairly large amount of ice
It is recommended that you use a large amount of ice, unless you want to make mixed margaritas (e.g. when whipping all the ingredients in a cocktail maker). Larger ice won't melt as easily as small ice or chunks of ice. The less ice melts, the more intense and richer your margarita will taste.
Step 6. Use quality salt for the rim of your glass
Sea salt and kosher salt are the most common types of salt and are best recommended to be rubbed or placed on the rim of your margarita glass. However, kosher salt will taste saltier than sea salt.
- Avoid using table salt because it will create fine lumps of salt on the rim of the glass. In addition, your drink will later taste too salty.
- You can also buy a special salt mix for margaritas at a grocery or liquor store.
Method 7 of 7: Coating the Lips of the Glass with Salt
Step 1. Pour the salt into a small saucer
It is recommended that you use sea salt or kosher salt because the grains are larger, so they look better and taste better. Try to pour the salt until it reaches a height of about 1 centimeter.
For a savory-sweet taste, add sugar to your salt before you touch the rim of the glass to the salt
Step 2. Wet the rim of your glass
The most common way to moisten the rim of a margarita glass is to cut a lime and place it on the rim of the glass, as you would a garnish, then twist the lime wedge around the rim of the glass.
Be careful not to press too hard on the lime as you rotate it around the rim of the glass as the lime juice may drip into the glass. If there are drops of lime juice on the walls of the glass, your margarita won't necessarily taste bad. Only, your margaritas will look a little messy
Step 3. Coat the rim of the glass with salt
There are two common ways to coat the rim of a glass with salt. The first way is to turn the glass upside down. Then, place the rim of the glass against the surface of the dish that has been filled with salt and press gently, as you would a cookie.
Alternatively, hold the glass horizontally and bring the rim of the glass close to the surface of the cup. Let the rim of the glass touch the salt, then turn the glass so that only the outside of the glass is coated with salt. This way, the salt just sticks to the outside of the glass so no extra salt gets into the glass and mixes with your drink
Tips
- Chill your glass beforehand to keep your margaritas cold and fresh for a longer time.
- The quality of the margaritas you make will depend on the quality of the ingredients, so don't be afraid to buy good quality ingredients!
- Try experimenting with adding herbs like mint, basil or cilantro, but make sure you don't add all three of them right away.
- To make a Blue Margarita, use blue curaçao (made from dried laraha orange peels and has a similar taste to oranges) instead of triple sec.
- Some people suggest squeezing a lime 4 to 10 hours before you use it. This way, the acidity of the lime will decrease, but the flavor will be stronger.
- Some margaritas fans suggest trying to make margaritas without using orange liqueur.
- For reference, one shot is equivalent to 30 to 45 milliliters.
