Shrimp can be a delicious dish if cooked on the grill properly. Clean the prawns thoroughly before you cook them. When it's clean, season it with spices or soak it in a marinade for added flavor. As a final step, you can grill the shrimp using a skewer or aluminum foil.
Ingredients
Shrimp Dried Seasoning
- 20 grams paprika powder
- 20 grams of garlic powder
- 20 grams of garlic salt
- 10 grams of black pepper
Garlic and Lemon Marinade
- 60 ml olive oil
- 60 ml lemon juice
- 3 cloves garlic (chopped)
- 20 grams parsley (chopped)
- 20 grams paprika powder
- 20 grams of salt
- 10 ml hot sauce (optional)
Step
Method 1 of 3: Cleaning and Seasoning Shrimp
Step 1. Buy fresh or frozen shrimp that are large
Jumbo or large shrimp are great for grilling because they won't fall off the grill bars and are easier to handle than small shrimp. Shrimp are also more likely to be overcooked when cooked on the grill, giving them a tough and chewy texture.
- Buy 10 or 20 shrimp for every half a pound.
- Cook fresh prawns the same day you buy them. You can also freeze it if you want to use it later.
- When bringing home fresh prawns, place them on ice to prevent them from rotting.
Step 2. Defrost the shrimp if you are using frozen shrimp
Defrost frozen shrimp by placing them in the refrigerator overnight. You can also rinse it in cold water for an hour to dilute it. Once thawed, wash the prawns in cold water, then drain through a sieve. After that, dry the shrimp by patting it with a paper towel.
When it's thawed, the shrimp will look a little transparent
Step 3. Remove the shells if you have to devein (remove the veins in the center of the shrimp)
Devein needs to be done if there are black veins along the back of the shrimp body. Start at the top and cut the shell off with scissors. You can cut the shells until they reach the end of the tail, or just in front of the tail (to preserve the tail). Peel the remaining prawn shells and discard.
- If you don't remove the tail, you can use it as a handle when dipping and eating grilled shrimp later.
- Don't cut the meat.
- If you don't remove the shell, you can get more flavorful shrimp.
Step 4. Devein if necessary
Use a small, sharp knife to slice off the back of the shelled shrimp. Pull the veins that are there and rinse the shrimp in cold water.
You can buy drained shrimp at the supermarket or grocery store
Step 5. Pour olive oil and lemon juice on the prawns, then sprinkle with salt and pepper
Pour the olive oil and lemon juice on the prawns, then sprinkle the seasonings on top. Turn the shrimp so that the seasoning is evenly distributed. This can enhance the flavor and give the shrimp a citrusy aroma.
Experiment with other spices, such as cumin, garlic powder, or ginger to give the shrimp a different taste
Step 6. Marinate the prawns in the marinade for a stronger flavor
Make a marinade by mixing oil and barbecue or hot sauce in a bowl. Add other seasonings to the marinade, such as garlic, pepper, salt, and/or cumin. Marinate the whole shrimp in the marinade and leave it there for 30-60 minutes.
- You can also add some ingredients, such as sugar, parsley, and lemon juice to the marinade.
- You can also buy pre-made marinades at the store if you don't want to make your own.
Method 2 of 3: Grilling Shrimp Using Skewers
Step 1. Skewer the prawns
Purchase wooden or metal skewers at the grocery store or the internet. Insert the skewer from the tail and stick it into the center of the shrimp until it sticks firmly. The shrimp will form a U-shape when stuck on the skewer. Do this for all the prawns.
- If using wooden skewers, soak the skewers in water for a few hours so they don't burn when you grill the shrimp.
- You can also use a grill basket instead of skewers (if you have one).
Step 2. Preheat the grill to 177-232 °C
Turn on the grill to heat it up if you are using a gas grill. If using a charcoal grill, add the charcoal to the bottom of the grill and arrange it into a pyramid. Next, spritz on gas (or kerosene) lighter filler and turn it on. Let the fire go out and the charcoal becomes coals. Wait 10 minutes for the grill to heat up before you grill the prawns.
- Some charcoal grills have an electric starter. If you have one, add charcoal and press the starter button to turn it on. It will take you about 8 to 10 minutes to heat the charcoal.
- By preheating the grill, the shrimp will cook evenly.
Step 3. Place the prawns on the grill for 3 minutes
The shrimp will make a hissing sound when they touch the grill. When cooked, the outside of the shrimp will turn pink, while the inside will turn white and opaque.
Step 4. Turn the prawns over, then bake for another three minutes
Turn the shrimp over on the grill using tongs so the other side cooks evenly. Do not overcook the prawns as this can make them chewy and tough.
Shrimp will curl when they are cooked
Step 5. Remove the prawns from the grill and serve
Place the prawns on a plate and let them cool for 2 to 3 minutes before you serve them. Grilled shrimp will taste delicious when eaten with vegetables (eg corn). You can also eat it without any additives.
- Shrimp can be served while still stuck on the skewer, or removed from the skewer first.
- Leftover shrimp can be stored in the refrigerator for 3 to 4 days.
Method 3 of 3: Grilling Shrimp with Aluminum Foil
Step 1. Turn on the grill until it reaches a temperature of 177–232 °C
On gas grills, you can adjust the temperature by turning the knob on the front of the grill. On a charcoal grill, place the charcoal at the bottom of the grill and arrange them in a pyramid shape. Sprinkle lighter fill fuel (or kerosene) over the charcoal and ignite. Let the heat turn off, and wait 10 minutes for the charcoal to reach the right temperature.
If there is an automatic starter in the grill, press the button after you put the charcoal in it
Step 2. Place the shrimp on the aluminum foil
Prepare a sheet of aluminum foil with a size large enough to accommodate all the shrimp you want to grill. Spread the aluminum foil on a flat surface and pour the shrimp in the center of the foil.
- You can also add some other ingredients (such as sausage, corn, and garlic) to it.
- If you are grilling a lot of shrimp, divide them into several aluminum foil packages.
Step 3. Bend the edges of the aluminum foil to wrap the shrimp
Bend the edges of the foil until the shrimp is completely covered. Roll up the top and bottom edges of the aluminum foil so that all the contents are tightly wrapped. Make sure the package is completely closed before you place it on the grill.
Step 4. Place the aluminum foil wrap on the grill for 10 to 15 minutes
If you are adding other ingredients to the package, cook the shrimp on the longer side. When the prawns are grilled, the seasoning and marinade in the package will seep into the prawns.
Step 5. Unwrap the aluminum foil and serve the prawns immediately
Remove the aluminum foil wrap from the grill using tongs. Open the top of the package and immediately serve the shrimp.
