Lobster is one of the most expensive menus in restaurants. But lobster itself is actually easy to make at home. You only need to buy fresh lobster and then boil it whole or just cook the tail. This guide provides you with instructions for cooking whole boiled lobster and grilled lobster tails.
Ingredients
Whole Boiled Lobster
- Fresh lobster
- Large pot of salt water
- Melted butter for serving
Grilled Lobster Tail
- 6 lobster tails
- 0.5 cup melted butter
- 1 clove of garlic, cut into small pieces
- Salt and Pepper
- Olive oil
Step
Method 1 of 2: Whole Boiled Lobster
Step 1. Buy fresh lobster
Fresh lobster is usually available at your local supermarket or fish market. Look for lobsters that are fresh and don't have sores or black marks on their skin.
Step 2. Fill the pot until it is almost full
Add two tablespoons of salt for each liter, then bring the water to a boil.
Step 3. Put the lobster in the water
Add the lobster and cover the pot.
Don't let the water spill. If you boil a large amount of lobster, boil the rest after boiling the first batch
Step 4. Boil the lobster
Once the water returns to a boil, the lobster will begin to cook. For cooking time, one pound of lobster takes 15 minutes, 1.5 pounds takes 20 minutes, and two pounds takes 25 minutes. The lobster is ripe when the skin turns a bright red color. When it's cooked, remove the lobster from the pot and place it on a plate with the stomach facing up, then let it cool.
It is important to accurately measure the cooking time because the color of the lobster can change before it is fully cooked
Step 5. Serve the lobster
Place the lobster on a serving plate and serve with melted butter and any other accompaniments you like.
Method 2 of 2: Roasted Lobster Tail
Step 1. Preheat your grill
Prepare your grill by heating it to medium to high heat. Make sure the heat on the grill is evenly distributed.
Step 2. Cut the lobster tail
Cut off the bottom of the lobster. Insert an iron skewer in the lobster tail meat. Brush the tail with olive oil.
Step 3. Bake the lobster tail
Place on the grill and bake for five minutes or until the skin turns bright red. Turn the tail and don't forget to add the garlic, salt, pepper and butter. Bake the other side for another five minutes or until the meat is no longer see-through.
Step 4. Serve
Serve your grilled lobster tails with melted butter, lemon wedges, or any other accompaniment you like.
Tips
- Adding salt to boiling water when cooking whole lobsters will reduce the risk of minerals from the lobster leaching out due to changes in water concentration.
- Lobster tails are sometimes also sold separately.
Warning
- If you cook the lobster alive, be careful not to hit the claws. If you can and are experienced, cut the claws off before cooking. Or, don't untie the lobster claws until the lobster is cooked.
- Tomalley, which is a green substance present in lobsters, functions as a lobster's liver and pancreas. Although edible, this part can also contain poison. It's a good idea to remove this part before cooking it.
