You can turn almost any flat, large piece of wood or furniture into a table by attaching pre-made legs. Use the disc method to attach the legs to a finished piece of furniture. Use the T-nut method to attach these legs to an unfinished table.
Step
Method 1 of 2: Attaching Table Legs Using a Plate
Step 1. Buy table legs
Your nearest home furnishings store should have several options. This method is best used for attaching legs to a finished piece of furniture.
Step 2. Choose table legs with bolts if possible
You will save steps by doing this. If your grocery store doesn't have bolts already inserted, purchase a package of hanger bolts for larger tables and dowel bolts for smaller tables.
Step 3. Purchase table leg plates
Compare the bolt size to the disc size to make sure they match. Try straight leg discs first, although you can also buy discs for bent legs.
Step 4. Install your hanger bolts inside the legs of your table
Measure to the center of the foot and mark with a pencil or marker. Drill a hole through the center of the legs, then insert the bolts firmly into the top of each leg.l
Start by twisting the bolt by hand. Then, use pliers to turn it until the bolt is in a firm position
Step 5. Turn your table or furniture over or lay it on its side
Step 6. Flatten the rectangular surface of the dish against the side of the table at the corners
Snap it into place or have someone hold it. Tighten with four bolts.
- If you buy a tabletop disc kit, you'll probably get four matching wood bolts.
- Repeat this process on the other three corners.
Step 7. Tighten the top of the hanger bolt into the disc
Twist to tighten it. Lift and stand the table on its legs to make sure that the table is level.
Method 2 of 2: Attaching the Legs Using T-Nut
Step 1. Purchase four table legs, a T-nut, a nut, and a hanger bolt at a home supply store
You can find unfinished table legs and all the hardware needed to install them at most hardware stores.
Step 2. Make four holes in the bottom of your table
Make sure these holes are evenly spaced to keep your table balanced. This form of mounting legs is perfect for tables that haven't been finished yet and will still be sheathed, added, or reinforced with other woods.
Make sure the holes are about the size of your T nut and not bigger
Step 3. Tap the T nut into the hole with a hammer from the end of the table base
Continue until the nut goes into the hole and there is no space left between the top of your table base and the metal.
Step 4. Attach four suitable sized hanger bolts against your T-nuts to the legs of your table
Measure and mark right in the middle of the top of the foot. Drill and punch a small hole, then twist the hanger bolt into the leg.
- Use locking pliers to strengthen the hanger bolts.
- If you purchased table legs that already have hangers installed in them, you can skip this step.
Step 5. Twist the legs of the table into the bottom of the table base until they are level with the top
Then, twist a regular nut over the bolt to keep it in position. Repeat for the other three legs.
