Incidentally, you find clothes that you like. The problem is, the collar is so low that it's not suitable for formal situations, such as the workplace or classy events. However, you do not need to return the clothes. With a little adjustment, you can cover the cleavage of the bust and still look beautiful. Whether you choose to layer up, add accessories, or use sewing kits, you can still look great in no time.
Step
Method 1 of 3: Wearing Lining Under Clothes
Step 1. Wear a light camisole of a suitable color
Avoid using a regular tank top because it looks too casual for formal wear. Look for higher-quality materials, such as lace or silk, and avoid clothes that are too bulky so that your silhouette doesn't look too bulky.
- Match the camis to the color of the outfit if you want to make it part of your outfit, instead of wearing something that was picked out on a whim.
- Wear a bra under the camis to hold it in place or look for a camis that already comes with a bra for more coverage.
- If you want something that will make you look slimmer, look for a camis that doubles as a shaper, like the Spanx.
Step 2. Let the pretty bra pop
You may not want to show the bra. However, if you choose the right material and style, this can result in a chic style in the clothes you wear. Some models of bras even seem to blend with the camis, and provide additional benefits as a breast holder.
- High cut bras can cover the chest area well. Choose a bra with a beautiful fabric pattern that matches your outfit, or opt for classic black.
- Bandeau bras don't have straps and can be attached directly to the chest making them perfect for wearing thin straps or as a layer for thicker bras for a neater look.
Step 3. Add removable panels to cover the chest area without making it look “full”
This is the easiest option if you don't want to buy new underwear or add extra layers of clothing. These strips of fabric are usually clipped or tied to the bra straps so you can wear the bra of your choice without worrying about the straps entangling each other.
- If you want to cover a low-cut back, look for a half-sized camisole that covers the area around the body.
- Look for convertible bras with removable front panels, such as the convertible bra t-shirt from Le Mystère.
- Look for “bra cover panels” on Amazon, or on Chickies Cleavage Coverage and Snappy Cami's websites.
Step 4. Secure the fabric with double-adhesive fashion tape
If you're concerned about the area under your neck exposing too much skin, this method will keep your appearance neat and close the gap in the chest area below the neck.
- Peel off one side of the tape and place it on the skin of the chest, just where you want to delimit so that there is a little space at the end of the fabric to hide the adhesive. Smooth out the applied adhesive, then peel off the side on the reverse end and attach the fabric over it. Do this on both sides of the neckline as needed.
- Use tape in a ready-to-use length or cut it according to your needs.
- Don't press too hard on the fabric when you're gluing it, as this can make it stiffen and the tape will come off.
- Carry extra tape with you wherever you go just in case the tape you put on comes off and you need to put it back on.
Method 2 of 3: Installing the Accessories in the Right Position
Step 1. Wear a silk scarf or scarf around your neck or shoulders
A thick wool scarf may work best with a thick jacket in winter, but a lighter scarf in a classic color or pattern can be a great addition to a work or party outfit.
- Wear a scarf over your shoulders and tie a knot across your chest. This method can also keep your arms warm if you wear sleeveless clothes.
- Tie the scarf to form a large bow tie across the chest for a charming look that can take your eyes off the short collar.
- Let the scarf hang over your upper body without tying it, then use a belt to hold it in place. This method also makes your curves look more defined.
Step 2. Wear an eye-catching necklace
This method can fill the gaping space under the neck as well as beautify your outfit. Wear several layers of beaded necklaces while wearing a simple black dress to stand out or look for one necklace that stands out.
- Look for a necklace with an adjustable chain so you can place it in the optimal place to cover the cleavage.
- Bib necklaces are a great option to cover up some chest space. These necklaces are usually made of overlapping chains or colorful beads and gems.
- Don't overdo the accessories. A flashy necklace paired with sparkling earrings or a fancy bracelet may seem over the top.
Step 3. Wear a brooch to pin the fabric in the space under the neck
If there is a tuft of fabric around the neck, try securing it with pins. There's no need to add any other accessories – a brooch is enough to hold it in place.
- If you don't have a brooch to work with, safety pins will work as well as long as you can hide them under the fabric.
- Look for safety pins that match your outfit if you can't hide them.
Method 3 of 3: Changing Clothing to Be More Covered
Step 1. Sew additional fabric to your garment
If you are skilled with needle and thread, try doing this yourself. You can even wear fabric from clothes you no longer wear like skirts. Try to match the fabric with the shape of the neckline to keep your appearance neat.
- Stick a pin into the fabric inside the neckline as you wear it. After that, take off the dress and sew the fabric along the neckline in the same color as the dress. Cut off the excess fabric and leave about 2.5 cm of space if you want to sew it.
- If you don't feel confident sewing your own, go to a tailor for help.
Step 2. Add snap closures to the dress to give it a variety of options
Just because you want to cover your cleavage doesn't mean you shouldn't wear a low-cut dress when you go somewhere else.
- Put on the clothes and mark where the buttons are attached with a pencil. Make one mark on the top of the bottom layer of fabric and another mark on the bottom of the top layer of fabric. Sew the buttons on the back of the marked fabric.
- You can wear these clothes all day by closing them when you are at the office and opening them when you go out.
Step 3. Shorten the straps on the garment to draw the neckline higher
Sometimes, straps that are too long make the dress hang too low on the body so that the chest area is clearly visible. By tightening the straps, you can make the dress look neater and more comfortable.
- Cut the rope at the back, then remove the excess and use the rope to measure the length of the rope cut on the other side. Sew each string back in place by making a few knots and making sure the rope doesn't twist before you start sewing.
- Do not shorten the straps if your dress has elastic or seams at the bottom of the chest, as this can make it too high and uncomfortable.
- Keep in mind that this will also shrink the hole for inserting your hand. Make sure it's in a comfortable position before changing anything.
