Dyeing your hair blue is a fun way to liven up your hair color. Before dyeing your hair blue, you should lighten it as much as possible as a fresh paint canvas. Then, you can dye your hair blue or use a special technique to make sure the finish is bright and long lasting.
Step
Part 1 of 3: Brighten Hair
Step 1. Start with a clarifying shampoo
Use a clarifying shampoo to help remove dirt deposits from your hair and make it easier to paint later. This shampoo also helps to get rid of the paint residue from the previous paint job. You can buy clarifying shampoo at beauty stores and pharmacies.
Follow the directions for use on the shampoo package. You can also use it like a regular shampoo
Step 2. Use a color remover if you've dyed your hair before
If your hair still has some paint left over from the previous dyeing, it's best to use a color remover so that your hair is ready to be dyed. This product doesn't bleach your hair, it just removes the dye and lightens your hair a bit. However, if your hair is still dark even after removing the paint residue, you will still need to lighten it.
- Follow the instructions to get rid of the color.
- You can buy a color remover kit at a beauty store.
- This kit has two ingredients that need to be mixed together and applied to the hair.
- After applying the color remover to your hair, you will let it sit for a while and then rinse it off.
- If you have heavy paint deposits on your hair, use a decolorizing product twice to clean it off.
Step 3. Lighten the hair if it is still dark
If your hair is still dark after using the color remover, then you'll need a bleach to make sure it looks blue after you've dyed it. You can buy a hair lightening kit from a pharmacy or salon, or use a professional to do it.
- Purchase a device designed to lighten hair.
- You may want to hire a professional to lighten your hair if you've never done it yourself.
Step 4. Repair hair with a deep conditioning treatment
Your hair can be damaged and dry after using color remover and lightening. To fix this, you can use a protein treatment product or stronger conditioner.
- Follow the instructions for use on the packaging. For conditioner products, apply conditioner to wet and clean hair, then let it sit for a few minutes.
- You may also want to wait a few days before dyeing your hair to give it a chance to recover from the chemical damage.
Part 2 of 3: Dyeing Hair
Step 1. Protect clothing and skin
Before starting the painting process, make sure you're wearing an old t-shirt that can be soiled. Then, wrap a towel or haircut robe around your neck to protect your skin from the paint and put on a pair of vinyl gloves to keep your hands and nails from getting stained with the paint.
- It's a good idea to apply Vaseline along your hairline and ears to keep the paint from getting stained.
- Keep in mind that paint that gets on your skin or nails will eventually wear off. However, if it gets on clothes or other fabrics, the paint won't come off.
Step 2. Shampoo hair completely
Hair must be extra clean before coloring so that the dye can adhere. Make sure you wash your hair before dyeing your hair. However, don't condition your hair. The conditioner will prevent the dye from penetrating the hair strands.
Step 3. Mix the paint
Not all paints need to be mixed. However, if the paint needs to be mixed before use, it's a good idea to follow the instructions on the package for mixing the paint. Use a plastic bowl and hair dye brush to mix the ingredients according to the directions on the package.
If you have paint that you don't need to mix, it's a good idea to keep the paint transferred to a bowl so it's easy to pick up and apply to your hair
Step 4. Apply the dye to the hair
When you are ready to apply the paint, start applying it to your hair in sections. It's also a good idea to use a non-metallic hair clip to hold about half of the hair at the top of your head so that the paint can be applied to the undercoat first.
- Use your fingers or a paintbrush to ensure that the paint is evenly distributed in your hair. Start at the roots and work your way to the ends of the hair.
- Some paint manufacturers recommend rubbing the paint until it's slightly foamy. Check the instructions on the packaging for instructions on how to use it.
Step 5. Let the paint sit as long as needed
After you've applied the dye all over your hair, put on a shower cap or wrap your hair in plastic and set a timer. The length of time required to wait depends on the type of paint used. Some brands need to wait up to 1 hour, while others only take 15 minutes.
Keep track of the timer so your hair isn't left out too long
Step 6. Rinse off the paint
When the time comes, rinse the paint off until the water is almost clear. Try using only warm water to rinse your hair. The warm water will remove more of the paint and the end result will not look as bright as you would like.
After you rinse off the paint, dry your hair with a towel. Do not use a hairdryer as this can damage your hair or cause the paint to seep out
Part 3 of 3: Keeping Hair Looks
Step 1. Apply vinegar as soon as possible after painting
To maintain the color and make it appear brighter, you can use a solution made with white vinegar and water in a balanced ratio. Pour one cup of white vinegar and one cup of water in a medium bowl. Then, pour the solution into your hair. Leave it for 2 minutes and rinse well.
It's also a good idea to shampoo and condition your hair again after using the vinegar to get the smell out of your hair
Step 2. Less shampooing
The less often you shampoo, the longer the color will last. If possible, try to shampoo no more than twice a week. To keep your hair clean, you can use dry shampoo.
- When you shampoo, make sure to only use cold or lukewarm water.
- It's also a good idea to follow up with conditioner and cold, high-pressure water to seal the strands and lock in more color.
Step 3. Stay away from styling methods that use heat
Heat can allow the color to seep out of the hair and cause the color to fade faster. To prevent this, try to avoid using hair styling tools that use heat, such as hair dryers, straighteners, or hot rollers.
- If you need to dry your hair, make sure to use a cool or warm setting in the hairdryer instead of hot.
- If you want to curl your hair, try using a foam roller before bed. This tool can curl hair using heat.
Step 4. Repaint your hair every 3-4 weeks
Most blue paints are semi-permanent colors and tend to fade quickly so they fade over time. To maintain the blue color of your hair, you need to repaint your hair every 3-4 weeks.
Tips
- Condition your hair with natural oils like coconut, almond, or gooseberry oil once you're done bleaching. This step will repair all the damage caused by hair lightening. You can simply wash off the oil after leaving it overnight.
- If you're painting on a table or tub, try cleaning it with Mr. Clean Magic Eraser.
- You don't need to lighten your hair if you dye it a dark color. Lightening products damage your hair, so if your hair is dark and you want to dye it a dark color, you don't need to lighten it to keep your hair healthy. Good hair dyes include Arctic Fox and Manic Panic because they are both vegan.
- If you're not sure you want to permanently change your hair color, try using a hair chalk or temporary paint to test the color and shade before deciding on a permanent change to your hair.
Warning
- Don't mix brightener and paint! This can cause a dangerous chemical reaction.
- Some paints use a chemical called Paraphenylenediamine, which can cause adverse reactions in some people. Make sure you do a patch test before painting, especially with paints that contain these ingredients.
- You should only use glass, ceramic, or plastic bowls for paint and lightener.
