Ugg boots are beautiful, comfortable and warm, but because they are made of suede sheepskin covered with wool, they must be cleaned with care. While you'll need some special tools and products to clean Ugg shoes (such as a special suede brush and cleaner), you can usually get all the tools in one handy kit. If you already have one, you can easily clean your Ugg shoes!
Step
Method 1 of 3: Removing Surface Dirt
Step 1. Scrub the boots using a suede brush to remove dust and dirt
Before washing them, remove dust, mud and other dirt on the surface of the shoes using a soft suede brush. The suede brush will also lift the bristles on the surface of the shoe, making it easier to clean.
Suede cleaning kits can be found at supermarkets, shoe stores, or leather stores. This kit usually contains a rubber eraser, a suede brush, and a suede cleaner. There are also kits that provide a sponge. Manufacturer Ugg also sells kits containing cleaning agents and conditioners
Step 2. Wet the shoes with a sponge that has been dipped in cold water
Wet the sponge, then wring it out to remove excess water. Next, wipe the sponge on the shoe until the surface is wet.
- Don't get the shoes soaking wet, as too much water can strip the sheepskin from the wool.
- If you don't have a sponge, you can use a soft, clean cloth.
Step 3. Apply suede cleaner to the sponge, then gently scrub the boots
Squeeze or spray suede cleaner on a sponge, then scrub the Uggs in gentle circular motions. Add the cleaner little by little to treat the entire surface of the bot.
- Remember, it's better to add a little cleaner at a time as needed than to use it in large quantities at once.
- Do not apply cleaning products directly to Ugg shoes.
- Some people prefer to make their own cleaner with equal proportions of water and vinegar. However, keep in mind that this can cause Ugg's shoes to change color.
Step 4. Rinse the sponge and remove the soapy water
Once the shoes have been cleaned, rinse the sponge and wring out the excess water, then wipe the cleaning product off the shoe in a circular motion as before. Continue to do this until all the soap residue on the surface of the shoe is gone.
Suede cleaner can also work as a conditioner. So you don't need to rinse it completely
Step 5. Dry the shoes by rubbing them with a soft white cloth
Choose a soft, clean cloth (such as a microfiber cloth) to remove as much water as possible. We recommend that you use a white cloth so as not to stain the Ugg shoes.
If there is still a lot of dirt on the cloth, you may have to go back to using the sponge to clean it
Step 6. Insert a tissue into the boot so that the shape of the shoe does not change
Sheepskin is easily deformed when wet even if it is only damp. To keep the shape of the Ugg shoe, insert a tissue, newsprint, or other similar object inside the shoe. Make sure to fill in the toes and toes of the boots.
If you wish, you can also fill it with meat wrapping paper or a clean towel
Step 7. Put the shoes in a cool, well-ventilated place, and let them dry for 24 hours
The best way to dry Ugg shoes is to let them dry on their own in a cool, well-ventilated location (such as a corner of the room). Do not dry shoes using a direct heat source, such as placing them in the dryer, heating them with a hairdryer, or placing them in front of a radiator. Do not put shoes in direct sunlight.
- Sunlight and heat sources can cause sheepskin to shrivel and crack. Both can also make boots fade.
- If you have a boot dryer, use this tool to speed up the process. Boot dryers use room temperature air so they are gentler than hot dryers.
Step 8. Brush the shoe in a one-way motion to remove the leather fibers
After drying, the suede on the boots may look flat. Use a suede brush to brush the shoe from the top to the toe. Do this continuously moving the brush in the same direction until the entire boot is brushed.
Leather fiber is the surface of a suede boot that is shaped like a fiber
Method 2 of 3: Treating Specific Stains and Removing Odors
Step 1. Use chalk to scrub the oil-stained shoes
If your Ugg boots are exposed to cooking oil, makeup, or other grease, rub the stain with white chalk. Leave the chalk on the stain overnight, then clean it the next morning with a suede brush. Repeat as needed until the stain is gone, then wash the boots if necessary.
You can also use cornstarch or baby powder to cover the stain and leave it on overnight. After that, use a suede brush to clean the powder. If the oil stain hasn't gone away, sprinkle it with fresh baby powder. Keep doing this until the stain is gone
Step 2. Remove scuffs and dirt by scrubbing them with a suede eraser
If the kit you purchased includes a rubber eraser, rub the tip against the stain or scuff on the boot. Usually this will remove minor stains, which will reduce the amount of scrubbing you have to do after the boots are wet.
If you don't have a suede eraser available, use a regular white rubber eraser. Do not use a colored eraser, as this can stain the boots
Step 3. Take the boots to a professional cleaning service if they have salt stains on them
After wearing them, you can wipe the shoes with a damp cloth to prevent salt stains. However, if your shoes have light-colored stains, you may need to take them to a dry cleaning service. Most home remedies for removing salt stains (such as vinegar) can damage the suede in your boots or discolor them.
Step 4. Wet the boots and let them dry if they get water spots
If some of the water soaks into the shoe, it can cause visible stains. To remove these water stains, rub the shoes with a damp sponge until the surface is evenly wet, but not soaking wet. After that, let the shoes dry on their own.
If your boots get wet with mud, wash them with suede cleaner
Step 5. Sprinkle baking soda or cornstarch into the Ugg shoes to remove odors
If you wear Ugg shoes for a long time, they may start to smell, especially if you wear them without socks. You can get rid of unpleasant odors by pouring a few tablespoons of baking soda or cornstarch into your shoes. Shake the shoe so that the baking soda is evenly distributed, then leave it for one night.
- If desired, you can also mix cornstarch with baking soda.
- Remove any powder that is in the shoes before you put them on.
Method 3 of 3: Prevent Stains and Damage
Step 1. Treat your shoes with a suede protective spray when you get them
The best way to keep Ugg shoes looking fresh and new is to protect them from stains before they happen. Take your Ugg shoes outdoors or in a well-ventilated area and spray the suede protector evenly over the shoes about 15 centimeters apart. Wet the entire surface of the shoe, but don't get it soaking wet. Next, place the shoes in a cool, well-ventilated area for at least 24 hours.
- When they are dry, brush the boots using a suede brush to remove the leather fibers.
- Suede covers can be found in supermarkets, leather stores, or directly from the Ugg manufacturer.
Step 2. Avoid storing shoes near heat sources or direct sunlight
Heat and sunlight can damage suede, discoloration, and cracking. Do not place Ugg shoes in front of a heater or in a window exposed to direct sunlight.
For example, if a heating vent is blowing into a certain corner of the room, don't place your boots there
Step 3. Avoid wearing shoes in water or snow
While Ugg boots are very warm and comfortable to wear in cold weather, they are not weather-resistant. When you're wearing Ugg boots and it starts to rain or snow, don't walk in deep puddles or snow. While you're still wearing them in the rain or snow, wipe them with a damp cloth as quickly as possible, and let them dry on their own.
Ice-covered roads are usually sprinkled with a saline solution. Salt can cause stains that are difficult to remove without discoloring your shoes. Therefore, shoes should be wiped as soon as possible when you wear them in cold weather
Step 4. Remove any dirt and dry mud adhering to the boots as soon as possible
As with any material, the longer the stain stays on the suede leather, the harder it will be to remove. If your boots get mud or dirt, allow the dirt to dry completely, then clean with a suede brush as quickly as possible. If necessary, wash your shoes with suede cleaner and a damp sponge to remove any remaining residue.
Let the boots dry on their own after you clean them
Tips
- To get rid of the odor, sprinkle cornstarch or baking soda on the inside of the shoe.
- Do not put Ugg boots in the washer or dryer as they may damage them.
