When you need an elegant hairstyle, try the classic French twist. This gorgeous look is common at dance parties and weddings, but you can make a looser or more casual version for every day wear. Read on to learn how to make a simple French twist or a classic bun with a little twist on top.
Step
Method 1 of 3: Simple French Twist
Step 1. Brush all of your hair to one side
If you want the result in a left-to-right bun, brush your hair to the left; if you want the bun from right to left, sweep the hair to the right. Hold the hair with your hands to keep it in place.
Step 2. Use bobby pins at the back of your hair to hold it in place
This will keep the hair pulled to one side. If your hair is long, thick, and heavy, bobby pins will help hold it in place all day. Otherwise, you will find strands falling off throughout the day.
You can make several crosses from the pins vertically to the back of the head for maximum hold
Step 3. Use a blow-hardening spray
Spray a little all over your hair at this point if you want to hold all the stray hairs in place. This can make the hairstyle a bit stiff, but it also helps hold it in place all day.
Step 4. Place your hands under the hair and comb it very gently
Be sure to comb to its side to keep it in position and not to remove the clasps.
Step 5. Roll your hair up
Gently grip and roll in the opposite direction of the direction you were sweeping. If you're sweeping it from left to right, roll it the other way. Tuck the ends into the holes made from the roll, or leave them loose for a more casual look.
When you're done, your hair forms a downward pointing cone, for now, the excess hair will hang to one side
Step 6. Insert bobby pins to secure the hair
Thread the ends of the bobby pins into the coil of hair through the bun and pin them through the hair along your scalp. Be sure to attach the clips hidden under the bun.
Step 7. Trim the hair
Use a bristle brush or a wide-toothed comb to smooth out the style, then use hardening spray to secure the bun.
Step 8. Insert the loose ends into the bun
Use tweezers if needed to secure the ends and make them invisible.

Method 2 of 3: Classic French Twist
Step 1. Comb your hair back
Start with all hair slicked back, no parting.
Step 2. Separate a 7.5 cm section of the top hair
Use a wide-toothed comb to separate a 7.5cm section of hair from your forehead to the crown of your head, forming an almost mohawk-like shape. Lift it over your head to separate it.
Step 3. Divide the separate section into three parts
One section should be at the front, one in the middle, and one at the crown of your head.
Step 4. Comb from the bottom to the top of the section
Take each of the three sections individually and comb from the bottom using a toothed comb from ends to roots. Gently squeeze each part, then drop it towards your face and hold it there for a while.
Step 5. Gather and curl the back of your hair
Hold it as if you were making a ponytail, then roll it up to 3/4 of the way to the roots of your hair.
Step 6. Roll your hair over your head
Now your hairstyle is starting to look like a French twist! Roll it over your head, then use tongs to secure the roll.
Step 7. Hold the ends of the hair in a small knot
Make a small bun and pin it just below the first part of the ponytail.
Step 8. Join the front to the roll
Pull the front part of the hair you're teasing into the coil, and wrap the ends around the coil. Insert it into the roll that is hitting your head, and use tweezers to hold it in place.
Step 9. Pin all the remaining loose hair
Your hair now looks like a classic French twist, with a slight tuft on top where the hair is brushed.
Step 10. Smooth your hair and tidy up your appearance
Use a comb to smooth the top and sides of your hair. Spray with a strong hardening spray to hold it in place.
Step 11. Done
Method 3 of 3: French Twist Locked by a Comb
Step 1. Gather all the hair into a low ponytail
Tie about 2.5 cm from your neck.
Step 2. Roll the ponytail up
Place it over your head. If needed, you can lift and lower the coil as many times as needed until all of your hair is on top of your head. Hold in place by hand.
Step 3. Starting from the side of your face, take the comb and brush your hair back
Gather the hair as you do it.
Step 4. When you reach the coil, lift the comb slightly, bringing the hair from the top side of the coil
Insert the comb into the coil, gently but firmly.
If you have very long or thick hair, you may need two combs: one on the top and one on the bottom
Step 5. Done
Now your hair will hold neatly in place.
Tips
- You will need a lot of bobby pins to hold your hair tight.
- This hairstyle is very good for long hair.
- For loose styles, don't brush your hair too neatly or fold the ends too perfectly into a cone. You may be able to hold it all in your head with a large alligator clip.
- If you want a light or loose look, pull a few strands out around the ears or for a messy look, loosen the bun again.
