A little makeup can emphasize some parts of the face while hiding blemishes. However, too much makeup can make you look unnatural. The key to wearing makeup is a balance between the amount of makeup and the area of the face it covers.
Step
Step 1. Start with a clean face
Clean your face as usual, or follow these tips:
- Skin exfoliation. Clean your face with a gentle exfoliant, and rub gently in a circular motion using warm water to remove dead skin cells. Rinse and pat the skin (don't rub it) dry with a towel.
- Moisturize skin. Apply a moisturizer with sunscreen containing SPF 15 or higher on the face and neck. Let the skin absorb the moisturizer first before moving on to the next step.
- Wet a cosmetic cotton or cotton ball with toner, and pat it on the skin. Toner is able to return the skin to its natural pH level and clean the remaining dust or dry skin cells.
- It's a good idea to shave your mustache and beard first before doing this step because some of the makeup can stick to the hairs on your face.
Step 2. Apply concealer
When buying a concealer, test it on the veins on the inside of your wrist and buy a concealer that covers the skin the most naturally. Here's how to apply it on the face:
- Hide dark circles under the eyes. Apply a small amount of concealer under your lower lashes and the area between the inner corner of your eye and your nose. Allow the concealer to dry by half, then blend with your fingers.
- Hide blemishes by dabbing a little concealer under them, and covering the top. Make sure that the edges are evenly mixed.
- Apply liquid foundation (optional). If you have a lot of areas to cover, look for a foundation in a color that is closest to your natural skin tone. Use your fingers or a cosmetic sponge to lightly apply the foundation to your face.
Step 3. Strengthen the concealer layer
Use a small brush to apply loose powder with a color that is closest to skin tone. Dab powder on each area covered with concealer.
Step 4. Apply powder to other areas of the face (optional)
Use a powder sponge or a slightly larger brush to apply powder to areas of the face that tend to be oily. Focus mainly on the T-zone, namely the forehead, nose and chin. For most people, these areas tend to be the oiliest.
Step 5. Apply lip balm
Choose a lip balm that is clear or neutral in color and can be used throughout the day. Lip balm will not only make your lips look soft, but also prevent them from chapping.
Step 6. Remove makeup before going to bed every night
Makeup that is left overnight (not washed off) can be bad for the skin. Before going to bed, wash your face to remove makeup. Finish by applying moisturizer. If your skin is dry, use a thicker moisturizer at night.
Tips
- If you have oily skin, consider using a shine-control hydrating lotion (a lotion that hydrates but doesn't make your skin look greasy).
- Don't use a lot of makeup because if you sweat and then you wipe your face or apply it incorrectly, other people will know that you are wearing makeup.
- Don't touch your face during the day. This will make the makeup fade and increase the risk of acne.
- People who are older or have dry skin may need to use a moisturizing cream that is thicker in texture. Some creams also contain ingredients that help with wrinkles, reddened skin, or other skin problems. Visit the makeup counter at the supermarket or store. Consulting a beauty expert will be easier than reading product labels at the pharmacy.
- Try mineral makeup specially made for men. Mineral makeup is great for the skin, contains SPF protection, and is almost invisible. Mineral makeup is especially good if you have problems like acne or rosacea.
- To add a touch of color, try using bronzer on your cheekbones, nose, forehead, and chin. Bronzer is commonly used by men and is applied using a brush. You can find bronzers that are specifically designed for men (the packaging will be different from bronzers for women), but don't be afraid to try the many bronzer options available for women. The counters and packaging may vary, but women's bronzers have more color options and finishes to choose from.
- Most bronzers come with brushes made of sponge or cheap plastic and don't apply powder evenly. Try going to the makeup counter and buying a powder brush. The powder brush is a very large brush with soft bristles.
- Don't touch your face to prevent acne.
- You may need to adjust the concealer to suit the weather and the sun. Don't be afraid to buy seasonal products and use products a few shades darker in the summer after sun exposure.
- If possible, trim your mustache and beard and allow your skin to rest for 20 minutes before continuing with your cleansing routine.
Warning
- Do not exfoliate immediately after shaving because it will cause irritation.
- Don't try to hide an open or bleeding stain. Make-up won't do much good and will make the stain look (and feel) worse. Wait for the stain to cover before applying makeup on it.
- If the cotton sticks to your beard when you apply toner, put the toner in a plastic spray bottle and spray it on your face. Store the bottle in the refrigerator so that the toner feels cool when sprayed.
