Plasma and LCD televisions require more maintenance than old glass screen televisions, which can be cleaned with glass cleaner and paper towels. LCD panels are made of plastic that can be damaged easily by chemical abrasives, scourers, and rags. This article shows you three ways to clean a flat-screen TV: with a microfiber cloth, with vinegar, or with a scratch removal technique.
Step
Method 1 of 3: Cleaning with a Microfiber Wipe
Step 1. Turn off the television
Don't disturb the pixels while the television is on, and turning off the television will allow you to see dust, dirt, and smudges better because you are viewing a dark surface.
Step 2. Find the microfiber cloth
These soft, dry rags are the same as eyeglass cleaning wipes. This cloth is suitable for LCD screens because it leaves no marks.
Step 3. Wipe your screen
Use a microfiber cloth to remove any visible stains or dust.
- Do not press on the screen if the smudge or dust does not go away. Try the next method below.
- Don't use paper towels, toilet paper, or old t-shirts as rags. These materials are more abrasive than microfiber cloths and can scratch the screen and leave marks.
Step 4. Check your screen
If the screen looks clean, you don't need to wash it. If you notice splashes of dry liquid, accumulated dust, or other clumps of smudges, try the next method below to make your flat screen shine again.
Step 5. Clean the screen frame
The hard plastic frame is not as sensitive as the screen. Use a microfiber cloth or duster to clean it.
Method 2 of 3: Cleaning with Vinegar and Water Solution
Step 1. Turn off the television
Don't disturb the pixels while the television is on, and you'll want to see any blemishes on the screen.
Step 2. Make a solution of one part water and one part vinegar
Vinegar is a natural detergent, which makes it safer and less expensive than other cleaners.
Step 3. Dip a microfiber cloth in the vinegar solution and gently wipe the screen
If necessary, gently press and rub the area that needs more attention in a circular motion.
- Do not splash or spray the vinegar solution on the screen. You could permanently damage the screen.
- If you want to buy an LCD cleaning solution, it is available at computer stores.
- Do not use cleaning solutions with ammonia, ethyl alcohol, acetone, or ethyl chloride. The liquid can damage the screen by cleaning too aggressively.
Step 4. Use a second microfiber cloth to dry the screen
Allowing the liquid to dry on the screen will leave marks..
Step 5. Clean the screen frame
If the hard plastic frame needs more than just dusting, dip a paper towel in the vinegar solution and wipe it over the frame. Use another cloth to dry.
Method 3 of 3: Removing Scratches from Flat Screen Televisions
Step 1. Check your warranty
If your television is heavily scratched and covered under warranty, it would be best if you swapped your TV for a new one. Trying to fix it could end up with more damage and not covered by warranty.
Step 2. Use the scratch removal tool
This equipment is the safest way to remove scratches on flat screen televisions. This equipment is available at TV points of sale.
Step 3. Use tar oil
Coat a cotton ball with tar oil and apply it to the scratched area.
Step 4. Apply varnish
Buy a clear varnish and spray a little on the scratch. Let it dry.
Tips
- Refer to the screen cleaning guide in your television manual
- The same technique can also be used to clean a computer monitor.
- You can also use special wipes that are sold at most computer stores.
Warning
- If your screen is rear-projection, pressing too hard can cause screen damage, as the screen is very thin.
- If the rag is not dry enough, the liquid may drip and cause a short.
