Are you improving the appearance of your old sofa or want to give your sofa a new look that is still comfortable to use? You might consider making your own seat cushion out of cheap foam and fabric. You'll be impressed at how easy and inexpensive it is to make beautiful new furniture from these simple materials.
Step
Step 1. Gather what you need
For most regular seat cushions, you will need fabric, foam, cotton fiber, zipper, sewing machine and suitable thread. Pretty simple right? You will also need certain tools, such as scissors, tape measure, ruler, iron and pin.
- Make sure to choose a thick and strong fabric, the seat cushion is easily damaged, so you can't just choose the fabric to make it.
- If you're not just refilling the cushion you already have, choose a cushion that's strong, and heavy and comfortable to sit on (don't just buy pillows that are on sale). A little extra spending will pay off for you.
Step 2. Measure the pillow you are going to make
If you're repairing an existing seat cushion, start by removing the pillow from its cover, and cutting the seams. Measure the actual sheet of fabric, and use the same size to make a pillowcase out of the new fabric. You will need two layers of fabric: the top layer (requires length and width only), and the bottom layer (requires length, width, and thickness of the sides). If you're making a cushion from scratch, you'll need three basic measurements: length, width and thickness of the pillow.
- To get a measure of length, measure the longest part of the seat cushion, and add an extra 2.5 cm.
- To get the width measure, measure the shorter part and add an extra 2.5 cm.
- To get a thick measure, measure the height of the pillow, multiply this measurement and add 2.5 cm. For example, if the height of the pillow is 10 cm, multiply it by 20 cm and add 2.5 cm to 23 cm.
Step 3. Prepare your fabric
If you have purchased a new fabric that has not been washed before, you should wash it first (follow the instructions on the package) to prevent it from shriveling up afterwards. Dry your cloth to dry and cut it to the size you have made. If necessary, iron your fabric first to remove any creases that may have occurred after washing.
Step 4. Sew the corners of the pillow
Place your foam cushion in the center of the fabric with the pattern side down, and use a pencil to outline the outline. Take the corner of the fabric, and fold it diagonally. Use your sewing machine to sew 2 inches (5 cm) of corners in this diagonal crease. Once the corners are sewn together, cut the remaining diagonal folds 2.5 cm from the seam you just made.
Step 5. Sew the zipper
The zipper must be sewn before it becomes a closed part of the pillow. Place your two pieces of fabric next to each other, using a pin to mark the center. Place them so that the patterned sections are facing each other. On the side where you will be sewing the zipper, measure out from the center (where the pin is). Sew all over the sides, corner to corner using 1cm spaced stitches and one long stitch. Repeat this on the second side. Place the zipper between the two sides, use a pin to keep it from changing its position, and sew the fabric attached to the zipper.
Make sure your zipper is centered before you pin it or sew it
Step 6. Sew the other side of the pillow
Sew around your fabric, using a pin to hold the two pieces of fabric together (with the fabric still upside down). Sew each side with seams 1 cm apart. When you reach the corner of the pillow turn the fabric in the sewing machine so you can continue sewing without moving it. Use reverse stitches to complete your stitches.
