If your WhatsApp chat history is accidentally deleted or lost, you can recover it. WhatsApp will automatically save the chats of the last seven days, make a backup every night at 2 in the morning, and save the backup to your own phone. You can also set your phone to back up your chats to the cloud. If you just want to recover deleted chats from a recent backup and you've backed them up to a cloud storage, the easiest way to restore them is to delete and reinstall the WhatsApp app. However, since your mobile device keeps a backup of the last seven days of each night, you can also restore chats on certain days of the past week, using the backup file.
Step
Method 1 of 3: Restoring Last Backup
Step 1. Check if you have backup of lost data
Do not make a new backup at this time because the new backup will overwrite the previous backup files, and the messages in the deleted backup from the phone will also be lost.
- Launch WhatsApp, then tap Settings.
- Tap Chats and Chat backup.
- Check the date and time in Last backup. If the available backup contains messages that you want to restore, continue following this method. Try another method if your message isn't there.
Step 2. Delete WhatsApp from the phone
Delete this app first so you can recover deleted messages.
Step 3. Visit your phone's app market and download WhatsApp again
Step 4. Run this app from home screen
Step 5. Agree to the given terms and conditions
Next, enter your mobile number.
Step 6. Recover your messages
The next screen will tell you that there is a message backup on your phone. Click "Restore" and wait for the restore process to complete.
By default, every day WhatsApp will back up all messages automatically at 2am. The most recent backup stored there will be the loaded backup
Method 2 of 3: Restoring Older Backups on Android Device
Step 1. Open the App Drawer
Your phone by default has a backup file on it for the last seven days, whereas Google Drive only has the most recent backup.
Step 2. Tap File Manager
Step 3. Tap on sdcard
Step 4. Tap on WhatsApp
Step 5. Tap Databases
If the data is not stored on the SD card, it may be on your internal storage/phone.
Step 6. Rename the backup file that you want to restore
Change the file name from msgstore-YYYY-MM-DD.1.db.crypt12 to msgstore.db.crypt12.
Previous backups might also be on earlier protocols like crypt9 or crypt10
Step 7. Delete the WhatsApp app
Step 8. Reinstall WhatsApp
Step 9. Tap Restore
Method 3 of 3: Restoring an Older Backup on an iOS Device

Step 2. Install the app on your phone
Step 3. Run File Manager
Step 4. Tap on sdcard
Step 5. Tap on WhatsApp
Step 6. Tap Databases
If the data is not stored on the SD card, it may be on your internal storage/phone.
Step 7. Rename the backup file that you want to restore
Change the file name from msgstore-YYYY-MM-DD.1.db.crypt12 to msgstore.db.crypt12.
Previous backups might also be on earlier protocols like crypt9 or crypt10
Step 8. Delete the WhatsApp app
Step 9. Reinstall WhatsApp
Step 10. Tap Restore
Tips
- The ability to recover chat history in full is only owned by Blackberry 10.
- It may take you a while to complete the first backup. To prevent mobile devices from turning off while performing backups, plug them into a power source.
- If you accidentally delete a message, don't back it up manually. If you do this, the old backup file (which contains the thread you want to restore) will be overwritten by the new backup.
