This wikiHow teaches you how to create an editable Word document from a JPEG image on a Windows or Mac computer. While there's no way to convert a JPEG image directly into an editable Word document, you can take advantage of the free Optical Character Recognition (OCR) service to scan a JPEG image into a Word document, or convert a JPEG file to PDF format, and then use Word to convert it into an editable Word document. Keep in mind that your JPEG images need to be of high quality and text-based for you to get the best quality.

Method 1 of 3: Using OnlineOCR
Step 1. Open the OnlineOCR site
Visit https://www.onlineocr.net/ through your computer's web browser. With this site, you can convert several types of files (including JPEGs) into Word documents.
Step 2. Click Select file…
It's in the lower-left corner of the web page. A File Explorer (Windows) or Finder (Mac) window will open and you can select the JPEG file you need to convert.
Step 3. Select the JPEG file
Go to the folder where the image is stored, then click the file you need to convert once.
Step 4. Click Open
It's in the lower-right corner of the window. The JPEG file will be uploaded to the OnlineOCR website.
On Mac computers, you can click “ Choose ”.
Step 5. Choose a language
If you want to select a language other than the options shown in the middle text field, click the currently selected language and select the language you want to use.
Step 6. Make sure you convert the image into a Word document
If the third text field doesn't show the "Microsoft Word (docx)" option, click the column and select “ Microsoft Word (docx) ” from the drop-down menu.
Step 7. Click CONVERT
This option is at the far right of the page. After that, OnlineOCR will start converting the JPEG file to a Word document.
Step 8. Click Download Output File
This link is under the button “ Select files… The converted Word document will then be downloaded to your computer.
You may need to specify a save location or confirm the download before the file is downloaded, depending on your browser settings
Step 9. Open your new Word document
Double-click the converted document to open it.
Step 10. Click Enable Editing
It's in the yellow bar at the top of the Word document. With this option, the document becomes editable.
- This step is necessary because you downloaded a Word document from the internet and Microsoft Word considers it a potentially dangerous file.
- Don't forget to save your changes by pressing the shortcut Ctrl+S (Windows) or Command+S (Mac).
Method 2 of 3: Using PDF on a Windows Computer
Step 1. Open the JPEG image you want to convert
Double-click the JPEG file to open it. The image will open in the Photos app.
Step 2. Click the "Print" icon
This printer icon is in the upper-right corner of the window. After that, the “Print” window will be opened.
Don't panic if you don't connect the printer to your computer; at this stage, you won't be printing anything actually
Step 3. Click the “Printer” drop-down box
This box is at the top of the “Print” window. A drop-down menu will be displayed.
Step 4. Click Microsoft Print to PDF
This option is in the drop-down menu.
Step 5. Click Print
It's at the bottom of the window. After that, a pop-up window will be displayed.
Step 6. Enter a file name
In the " Name " text field, type the name you want to use for the converted document.
Step 7. Select a save location
Click the folder name (eg Desktop ”) on the left side of the window.
Step 8. Click Save
It's at the bottom of the window. The PDF version of the JPEG image will be saved in the selected folder.
Step 9. Open the PDF file storage directory
You can find the files in the folder that was previously set as the converted storage directory.
Step 10. Right-click the PDF file
A drop-down menu will appear after that.
Step 11. Select Open with
This option is in the drop-down menu. A pop-out menu will appear after that.
If you don't see the option " Open with ” in the drop-down menu, click another area to close the drop-down menu, then click the PDF file once to select it before you right-click the file again.
Step 12. Click Word
It's in the pop-out menu. Microsoft Word will open.
Step 13. Click OK when prompted
Word will convert the PDF file into a Word document.
This process takes a few minutes
Step 14. Review the converted Word document
The PDF to Word conversion process isn't always perfect so you may need to tidy up some text or remove images that aren't positioned properly.
If the document as a whole cannot be edited or most of the text of the document becomes inaccurate, you will need to use OnlineOCR
Method 3 of 3: Using PDF on Mac Komputer
Step 1. Select a JPEG image
Go to the directory where the JPEG file you want to convert is stored, then click the file once to select it.
Step 2. Click File
This menu option is at the top of the screen. A drop-down menu will appear after that.
Step 3. Select Open With
This option is in the drop-down menu “ File Select the option to display the pop-out menu.
Step 4. Click Preview
It's in the pop-out menu. The JPEG file will open in the Preview application.
Step 5. Click File again
The drop-down menu will be displayed again.
Step 6. Click Export as PDF…
This option is in the drop-down menu. Click an option to display a new window.
Step 7. Select the location where the conversion results will be saved
Click the " Where " drop-down box, then select the name of the folder you want to save the converted PDF document to.
Step 8. Click Save
It's at the bottom of the window.
Step 9. Select a new PDF document
Go to the directory where the PDF version of the selected image is stored, then click the file once to select it.
Step 10. Click File, then select Open With.
Pop-out menu " Open With " will be opened.
Step 11. Click Microsoft Word
It's in the pop-out menu. After that, Microsoft Word will be opened.
If you don't see Word as an option, you can still open the PDF document by running Word first, clicking the " File ", choose " Open ”, and clicking the PDF document in the Finder window that appears.
Step 12. Click OK when prompted
Word will convert the PDF file into a Word document.
This process may take several minutes
Step 13. Review the Word document
The PDF to Word conversion process isn't always perfect so you may need to tidy up some text or remove images that aren't positioned properly.
