This wikiHow teaches you how to watch DVDs on a Windows computer using VLC Media Player. At this time, there is no built-in option in Windows 10 that will allow you to play DVDs. However, you can download VLC Media Player for free to play DVDs and watch videos. If the Windows computer you are using does not have a DVD disc player, purchase an internal or external DVD drive (drive) so that you can play DVD discs.

Part 1 of 3: Installing VLC
Step 1. Visit the VLC download page
Launch your web browser and visit
Step 2. Click the Download VLC button
It's an orange button on the right side of the page. Once you click on it, the latest version of VLC media player will be downloaded to your computer.
Depending on the browser you are using, you may need to specify a location to save the download and/or click the button Save or Download before the file is actually downloaded.
Step 3. Double-click the VLC setup file
This file is in the form of an orange and white traffic cone. Look for the file in the "Downloads" folder which is used to store downloaded files by default on your computer (for example, on your Desktop).
Step 4. Click Yes when prompted
The VLC setup window will open.
Step 5. Select the desired language, then click OK
Select the language by clicking the drop-down box.
Step 6. Click Next on each page
With this action, VLC media player will be installed with optimal settings.
Step 7. Click Install
It's at the bottom of the installation page. The VLC media player will start installing on your computer.
Check the green bar in the window that appears to see how the installation is progressing
Step 8. Click Finish when prompted
The installation process will end and the installer window will close. Now the VLC media player is installed on the computer.
Part 2 of 3: Making VLC the Default Video Player
Step 1. Click Start
Click the Windows logo in the lower left corner.
Step 2. Click Settings
It's a gear-shaped button in the lower-left side of the Start window.
Step 3. Click Apps
This is a bulleted list icon containing several horizontal lines.
Step 4. Click Default apps
It's a tab on the left side of the Apps menu.
Step 5. Scroll to the “Video player” section, then click the current app
Usually, the current app under the " Video player " heading is the Movies & TV app.
Step 6. Click the VLC media player option
This option is represented by an orange traffic cone icon in the window that appears. Once you do that, VLC Media Player will become the default movie player for all media on your computer.
Part 3 of 3: Playing DVDs with VLC
Step 1. Insert the DVD disc into the DVD drive on the computer
Insert the disc with the label facing up.
If VLC opens after you insert the disc, the DVD will start playing automatically
Step 2. Run VLC
You can search for the shortcut on the desktop. If it's not there, click Start, type " vlc ", then click the VLC icon.
Step 3. Click Media
It's in the upper-left corner of the VLC window. A drop-down menu will appear.
Step 4. Click the Open Disc option
It's at the top of the drop-down menu Media. Once you do that, a window for setting DVD preferences will open.
Step 5. Click Play
It's at the bottom of the window. After a minute or so, the DVD will start playing.
If the DVD has a title screen (most DVDs have one), you must click on the desired menu item (for example Play or Scene Select).
Tips
- Windows Media Player no longer supports DVD playback.
- If you don't like VLC media player, you can use one of the various free media players available on the internet, such as DivX and RealPlayer.
