This wikiHow teaches you how to change WhatsApp settings so that your online status is unknown.

Method 1 of 2: iPhone or iPad

Step 1. Tap the green icon with white phone in the chat bubble to open WhatsApp

Step 2. Tap the gear-shaped Settings icon in the lower-right corner of the screen

Step 3. Tap the Account option next to the blue box with a white lock icon

Step 4. Tap on Privacy near the top of the menu

Step 5. Tap Status at the beginning of the menu

Step 6. Tap Only Share With…
- Do not select any contacts.
- Your status will appear blank.

Step 7. Tap Done in the top right corner of the screen
The phrase "0 contacts selected" will appear under "Only Share With…."

Step 8. Tap Privacy on the top left corner of the screen

Step 9. Tap Last Seen to set who can see your WhatsApp online status

Step 10. Tap Nobody to get rid of your last online time display
Method 2 of 2: Android

Step 1. Tap the green icon with white phone in the chat bubble to open WhatsApp

Step 2. Tap in the top right corner of the screen

Step 3. Tap Settings at the bottom of the drop-down menu

Step 4. Tap Account next to the lock icon

Step 5. Tap Privacy at the top of the menu

Step 6. Tap Status under "Who can see my personal info" section

Step 7. Tap Only Share With…
- Do not select any contacts.
- Your status will appear blank.

Step 8. Tap the white checkbox
This box is in a green circle, in the lower right corner of the screen.
The phrase "0 contacts selected" will appear under "Status"
