Stuffed dice, or as they are sometimes called heavy or bent dice, can be used to surprise, confuse, or conquer. By adjusting the weight distribution on a die, you can set it to land more often on the side you want. Whether you want to do some impossible magic tricks or dominate a game of craps, learning how to fill the dice is a fun trick. You can learn how to drill, make dice with various variations, or slowly melt the dice to get the effect you want.

Step

Method 1 of 4: Drilling Dice

Step 1. Get the required materials

The most traditional way of filling dice requires simple tools and supplies that you can get from a home supply store or hardware store. Look for a large number of dice so you can try a few different techniques until you get it right. It is also recommended that you have:

  • Electric drill
  • Small drill gauge (no bigger than the dot on the dice)
  • Small nail gauge
  • Super glue
  • Paint
  • Some dice to weight

Step 2. Decide which side you want to weight

The easiest way to “trick” or “fill” a die is to drill into the die and weight one side to make that side land more often. So you need to choose which side you want to be out on more often, and weight the opposite side.

Any number you know and your opponent doesn't know will work, but if you want to trick some of the dice to play craps, maybe you want to make it heavier so that the six comes up more often, or you can weight another number to make sure the other player loses. This is up to your choice

Step 3. Drill the dice straight

Make holes in the plastic as small as possible to avoid paying attention to your trick. Ideally, a small drill gauge no larger than 1/16 inch should be used. You can use it to gently open the hole and create space for the ballast.

  • Clamp the dice on a vise to protect your fingers. Never try to hold the dice while you are drilling it at the same time.
  • Drill through the center of the die, trying to drill as straight as possible to avoid drawing attention to the holes you made. Leave the edges smooth so you can easily insert the weights.

Step 4. Insert the small nail

Commonly used weights are small nails or pins, which are used to fill one side of the die. The weights should match the diameter of the hole, which is usually about 1/16 of an inch.

  • If you're using nails, use a cable cutter or small cutter and cut off some of the weights from the ends after you dice them. If you are using a small pad, push it in and use the needle to insert it deeper into the die. Do this as close to the end of the die as possible or you will mess up the ballast effect.
  • Rework the ends using sandpaper or a metal sharpener to smooth them out. If any metal has passed through the end of the die, you will need to smooth it out. Nothing gets you caught faster than the metal appearing on your dice.

Step 5. Add glue to seal the ballast

Use a little superglue to seal the end of the hole you just drilled. You'll need a little superglue to cover the hole and make sure the ballast doesn't come out again.

After adding the glue, let it dry completely and then grind it again with sandpaper to smooth out any lumps. Use your finger to feel the dot on the dice and make the part to cheat just like the dot

Step 6. Paint the ballast

Use a small amount of dark ink, Sharpie, or gun-black to color the fake parts you're weighing. Make sure the color matches the dots of the other dice as much as possible. Over-coloring will either catch your ballast or spoil the trick. Don't be fooled by your own trick by messing up the colors and accidentally coloring the whites of the dice. Carefully paint the dice into place on the dots and make them even and uniform.

The dot on a common die is usually pure black and shining. Indian ink is the best choice for coloring. Use a new brush with a fine tip and keep the tip pointed. If you want, you can even outline the dots with a very small strip of tape to prevent the ink from hitting the whites of the dice

Method 2 of 4: Melting the Dice

Step 1. Place the aluminum foil on the biscuit tray

If you don't want to drill, a faster method is to melt. To make sure you don't stink, stick plastic all over your heater, cover the biscuit liner with aluminum foil to keep things safe. Do this in a well-ventilated area with the windows open and keep an eye on the dice as you do this. It's very likely that you're over-melting the dice, so keep a close eye on the process.

Another easy way to weight the dice is to gently melt them, so that the weight of the dice moves to the bottom and changes the effect of the throw. You have to be very careful not to melt the dice too much and change their appearance. It won't take long to smooth the plastic and weight the base of the opposite side so that the die lands on that side more often

Step 2. Preheat the oven to 93 degrees Celsius

Keeping the temperature low will help you not to overdo it. 93 degrees Celsius isn't high, but it's enough to heat and soften the plastic and change the shape of the dice a bit.

Do not use the microwave. The microwave won't be able to melt the dice as desired and will most likely warp the plastic of the dice and make them look cute. It is also dangerous. Avoid putting the dice in the microwave

Step 3. Place the dice in the oven with your desired number facing up

Keep an eye on the dice and remove them from the oven before they pass 10 minutes. Take the dice with gloves on, then immediately place them in the ice cup to harden the plastic and make sure the dice don't continue to melt.

  • If you see bubbles or the shape of the dice has changed slightly, throw the dice and try again, but for a shorter time. You'll have to pick up the dice before you notice a change, so you may need to try it a few times.
  • Keep your room ventilated. Inhaling the vapors of melted plastic is dangerous and you need to be very careful. Make sure you only melt the plastic, not burn it and start a fire.

Step 4. Test the dice several times

Throw a few times and test your trick dice. If you land more often on the side you want, you have a well-filled dice. If it doesn't work the way you want, you can try melting again or using a new die.

Method 3 of 4: Dice Contents Varies

Step 1. Drill some points

If you really want to make elaborately customizable dice, you'll need to open the inside of the dice without visibly changing the outside appearance. This will take some practice and patience until you get it right, but you can still do it by starting to drill holes on different sides of the die using a small drill gauge.

Make as few holes as possible. However, if you're having trouble scraping the inside, you'll need to drill some holes. In this case it might be better if you drill all the holes, to make it look uniform

Step 2. Carefully punch holes in the dice

The best tool for punching holes in a die is a dentist's pick or other small pry tool. Scrape the inside of the dice little by little carefully and slowly. If you can scrape each part of the hole, scrape as much as you can from different angles. Eventually you'll be able to punch holes all over the inside of the dice.

Go as deep as possible and try to scrape as much as possible from each corner of the die. You won't be able to punch the entire die from one side, but you can do it from multiple sides

Step 3. Plug all the holes except for one hole

Apply super glue to each hole and let it dry. This will help maintain the weight you are putting on. Don't worry about the glue that might make the dice look different. You can smooth it using sandpaper. Just make sure the weight is correct now.

Load Dice Step 14

Step 4. Insert the weight into the center of the die

Put a small piece of weight in the center of the die. Make sure the final weight of the dice is the same as the normal dice, so hold the normal dice in your hand to compare the weights as you work. The average dice holder won't notice the slight difference, but you certainly don't want your weighted dice to feel hollow and fake.

Insert some small weights into the holes. Feel the weight and add more weight if necessary. The ballast will move inside, but don't worry about the noise it makes. You can take care of it in the next step

Load Dice Step 15

Step 5. Mix the wax and coconut oil

You'll be filling the dice with a wax mixture that's hard enough to secure the ballast and keep it cool, but smooth enough that you can melt it with body heat – that is, from the heat generated by your fist. The right mix is wax and coconut oil because they are both easy to find and inexpensive. You need to mix them together to form a solid meltable mixture that you can make at home quickly.

  • Melt your wax into a liquid in a saucepan. Add 80 percent coconut oil to the wax and mix thoroughly in a saucepan. Let it harden.
  • Test the consistency of the mixture by holding a small amount in your hand and allowing it to melt into a liquid. If it's hard to melt, add coconut oil. If it's too easy, add wax. When you are satisfied with the consistency of the mixture, fill the dice with the wax mixture.

Step 6. Close the last hole

Cover the hole thoroughly with glue, repairing cracks, crevices, and other minor damage that may have been caused by drilling. This is a more messy process than the one-hole method, so you'll have to work harder to clean things up, color them, and make your dice look like normal dice. Take a few moments to make it look original.

Step 7. Roll the dice to cheat

When you are ready to use the dice, clench it hard in the position you want it to appear face up. The wax will melt slowly and allow the weight to sink on the opposite side and weigh the dice. Let the dice sit or refrigerate for a few minutes to cool the wax and keep the dice heavy.

Step 4. Practice the next section often

This doesn't come naturally.

Step 5. Roll the dice slowly into the palm of your hand, then push your thumb into the unrolled die

If you succeed, another dice will either roll over the edge of the table or fall off the table. In this case, say, "Ah, wrong. I'll throw it again."

Step 6. Never weigh the dice before doing this or your efforts will be in vain

Tips

Provide different paired dice in case a player wants to check

Warning

  • Be careful when dealing with hot substances.
  • Allow the hot dice to cool before you handle them with your bare hands.
