Sometimes while traveling, camping, or climbing a mountain, you suddenly feel the urge to pee. The problem is, there are no toilets within a 1km radius of where you are. In a situation like this, you have no choice but to find a hidden location in the outdoors where you can urinate without worrying. This article will provide information on how to urinate in the open.
Step
Method 1 of 3: Finding the Right Location
Step 1. Think about your privacy
Keep in mind that what you do may make other people feel embarrassed or offended. Try looking for bushes, large trees, or large rocks that can protect you from other people's eyes. However, be careful with thick bushes as insects and spiders often nest there.
Step 2. Do not urinate in public
Try finding a restroom. If you find a men's restroom, there is usually a women's restroom nearby. Urinating in public is illegal in most large cities, and you may be subject to fines or other penalties.
If you really have to, try to find a place behind the bushes so it doesn't attract the attention of others. Another option is to urinate near an alley wall or behind a building. For safety's sake, ask a friend to accompany you, especially at night, or in unsafe areas
Step 3. Choose a soft surface, not a hard one
Soft surfaces, such as grass and dry leaves on the ground, will absorb fluids faster than hard surfaces. This will help reduce unnecessary splashing.
Step 4. Pay attention to the wind direction
If the weather is windy, squat with your back to the wind. This way, the urine will flow away from you.
Step 5. Don't choose a sloping surface
If you have no other choice, squat face down. That way, the urine will flow away from you, not toward you.
Step 6. Choose a location that is at least 60 meters from water sources, trails, and camping areas
Otherwise, you run the risk of contaminating water sources and spreading disease.
Method 2 of 3: Peeing Outside
Step 1. Remove clothes and panties so they don't get in the way
Wet clothes are not only uncomfortable, they can also lead to infection. Once you've rolled up your skirt, shirt, shorts, or trousers to keep them out of the way, lower your panties down to mid-thigh.
- If you are wearing a skirt or dress, lift the hem up to the waist. If the model of the skirt or dress is very wide, with a lot of fabric, collect it in front of you and lift it. Don't let any part of the skirt hang behind you.
- If you are wearing shorts or trousers, unbutton and zip them first. Then, lower the pants to mid-thigh. Don't let your pants go past your knees because they can get wet with urine. Maybe you should roll up the hem of your trousers too.
Step 2. Try bending over or crouching
Place your feet slightly wider than your shoulders and squat down. Maintain balance by leaning forward. This position will place your private area behind your panties and trousers/shorts (if you wear them).
- If you're having trouble keeping your balance, try touching the ground with one hand.
- Use your hands to hold the trousers or shorts around the knees. This way, your pants won't get wet with urine.
Step 3. Try to sit between two objects
Look for two objects, such as a rock or log. You have to sit on the edge of one object, and place your feet on the other object. Inch forward so that your private area is directly above the ground. Try not to touch the private area of the object you are sitting on. Make sure the thighs are not touching each other.
After you finish urinating, get up from the emergency toilet. Be careful not to step on a puddle of urine
Step 4. Consider urinating using a wide-mouthed bottle
If you choose this method, you'll need to lower your panties and trousers/shorts down to your ankles. Squat on the ground and place the bottle between your legs. Pee into the bottle. Make sure you mark the bottle and don't use it for other purposes.
Step 5. Dry your private area
Otherwise, you run the risk of getting an infection. You can use baby wipes, facial tissue, toilet paper, or even “emergency wipes.”
- If you use baby wipes, facial tissue, or toilet paper, don't throw them on the ground. Put the used tissue in a plastic bag and throw it in the trash you find.
- If you use baby wipes or other wet wipes, choose one that doesn't contain alcohol. Too much alcohol can kill bad and good bacteria at the same time. This can lead to urinary tract infections.
- You can make an "emergency wipe" out of a handkerchief or bandana. Wipe the private area with an emergency cloth, then dry the cloth in the sun to dry. The sun's UV rays will help disinfect the cloth. However, if you're in an area that's humid, rains a lot, or has high humidity, it's a good idea to rinse your rags frequently to prevent odors.
Method 3 of 3: Using a Urinary Device for Women
Step 1. Consider purchasing a standing urination device for women
The size is not too big so it can be carried in a bag or handbag. You can buy them online or at stores that sell camping gear. The shape is like a funnel, but the top is slanted.
This female urination device is also known as a FUD (female urination device), a female urinary aid, a standing urination device, or a portable urination device
Step 2. Instead, practice using it first
Before traveling with a urinary aid, such as hiking or camping, you may need to practice using it in the bathroom. It takes time to get used to using it. Do not let you have to use it on a trip and urine is splashed or dripping everywhere because you are not used to it.
Step 3. Unbutton the pants or lift the skirt out of the way
This device will help you urinate while standing, but you should still do it in a hidden place.
Step 4. Slide the panties to the side
Grasp the panties by pulling the leg holes toward the thighs. If you wear tights, they may need to be lowered to make the tool easier to use.
Step 5. Position the tool so that it covers your private area
Press the mouth of the mouthpiece against your body. The pointed part of the spout should point toward the ground and away from the foot. Make sure the tip of the spout is lower than the back of the funnel.
Step 6. Know how to clean the urinal after use
Make sure you wipe the private area after urinating or you could get an infection. If you can find water, rinse the appliance immediately. Otherwise, put the appliance in the plastic clip bag (or the container provided when you purchased it), and you can wash it later.
