Perineal massage is a method used to relax and flex the perineum, the area between the vagina and anus. This practice is usually performed during the last six weeks of pregnancy, to reduce tearing of the perineum during childbirth and to help prepare for the sensations experienced during childbirth. If you don't feel comfortable being massaged by someone else, you can do it yourself.
Step
Method 1 of 2: Doing Your Own Perineal Massage
Step 1. Check with your doctor or midwife before starting
Perineal massage can be dangerous if done with too much force, not enough lubrication, or using the wrong method. To be safe, talk to your doctor or midwife about this plan.
Step 2. Take a warm bath for ten minutes
This will help you relax before the massage and relax the muscles around the perineum. Try adding essential oils to soften the skin and calm the mind.
Step 3. Trim the nails so as not to injure the perineum
The tissues of the vagina and perineum are very delicate. Cutting your nails short will prevent cuts to the skin or discomfort to the body.
Step 4. Wash your hands thoroughly with soap and water
Do not let germs into the birth canal. So make sure you wash your hands properly before starting.
Step 5. Get into a comfortable position
The best place to do this massage is in bed. Lean on a pillow to support your back and bend your knees. You should relax during the massage. So, find a place that makes you feel comfortable.
This massage can also be done while sitting on the toilet with the legs raised or supported using a small chair
Step 6. Apply lubricant
Lubricate the thumb and perineal tissues with a water-soluble lubricant. The best lubricants to use are vitamin E oil, almond oil, or olive oil.
Step 7. Insert your thumb about 2 cm into the vagina
The other fingers are on the buttocks. Press down toward the anus and against the sides of the vaginal wall. Hold your thumb in this position for about a minute. You will begin to feel a slight heat or tension.
- Remember to keep breathing deeply during the massage.
- Consciously relax your muscles if you feel muscle tension.
Step 8. Gently massage under the vagina
Massage into a "U" shape by moving your thumb up and down repeatedly. Try to relax your muscles during this massage. Do this movement for two to three minutes.
Step 9. Repeat the massage
You will spend about 5 to six minutes for the massage to finish. It may take weeks for you to notice that your perineal area has become more elastic.
Step 10. Take a shower
After the massage, take a shower to wash off the lubricant.
Method 2 of 2: Doing a Perineal Massage with a Partner
Step 1. Choose a partner you trust
The ideal partner for this intimate situation should be someone who can relax you like a husband or a professional doctor. You need to feel comfortable communicating during the massage.
Step 2. Be prepared for emotional reactions
Even if the massage is done by your husband, you may find it strange and awkward. This is very natural. Keep in mind that a perineal massage serves the same purpose as any other massage: to release tension and, in the case of childbirth, to reduce the discomfort the mother feels.
Step 3. Communicate with your partner
Let your partner know if you feel any discomfort. It's natural to feel a little pressure or discomfort, but if it feels too much, ask your partner to pause, or reduce the pressure.
Step 4. Make yourself comfortable in a relaxed position
You should be able to relax the muscles and be in a position with your legs open. Try lying in bed with your knees bent, and using pillows to support your back. Your partner will be able to do a better massage with this position.
Step 5. Ask your partner to prepare before the massage
Nails must be trimmed, and hands must be washed before starting. If necessary, your partner can use rubber gloves during the massage to keep the perineum clean and hygienic.
Step 6. Apply lubricant
Your partner will need to lubricate his hands and your perineum with a water-soluble lubricant. The best lubricants are vitamin E oil, almond oil, or olive oil.
Step 7. Start with your partner gently massaging the perineum
Your partner should massage the outside of the perineum with his thumb. Back and forth movements and slowly on the outside of the perineum will help you and your partner more comfortable during the massage.
Do this for one to two minutes
Step 8. Insert index finger
Your partner should use the index finger instead of the thumb. Once inside, move it from side to side in a “U” shape while pressing down.
Continue this movement for two to three minutes
Step 9. Repeat the massage
For best results, do this massage twice in one position. Try to do this massage every day for the last six weeks leading up to the birth.
Step 10. Take a shower
After the massage, take a shower to wash off the lubricant.
