When you find urine stains on a chair or car seat, you may think that the stain and odor will not be able to be removed. Fortunately, that's not the case. The first step to cleaning a new urine stain is to absorb all the droplets with a cloth or kitchen paper. That way, no stains will form deep in the car seat lining. After that, there are various ways to clean the stain, depending on your choice, the type of upholstery, and how long the stain has been there.
Step
Method 1 of 4: Using Cleaning Solution
Step 1. Open the car door and put on rubber gloves
Opening the doors and windows of your car will help remove the urine odor, as well as the smell of cleaning agents from inside the car. Meanwhile, rubber gloves are useful for preventing your hands from smelling urine or being exposed to cleaning agents.
Step 2. Mix water, white vinegar and dish soap as a cleaning solution
Mix about 500 ml of cold water, 1 tablespoon (15 ml) of white vinegar, and 1 tablespoon (15 ml) of liquid dish soap in a small bowl. Stir everything slowly until well blended.
Vinegar is an important ingredient because it serves to disinfect the dirty area as well as destroy the acid content in the urine
Step 3. Use a sponge to clean the urine stain
Remove the stain by patting the sponge, not rubbing it. Dip a cloth in the cleaning solution and then dab it into the stain area. Do not over-wet the cloth or the car seat will actually get wet. To prevent the stain from getting wider, start cleaning from the outer edges of the stain and work your way up to the center with a sponge.
Step 4. Pat the stain dry
Use a clean, dry cloth to absorb any remaining cleaning solution. Alternately pat the cloth that has been given the cleaning solution and dry it until the stain is gone.
If the urine stain is still visible after cleaning with this solution, you can add a few drops of 3% hydrogen peroxide with a dropper and a few drops of ammonia (optional). Pat the stained area with a clean cloth and cold water to remove any chemical residue
Step 5. Aerate the car seat
Even though it should be dry by now, let the car seat air dry for a while so that it is completely dry inside and out before reusing it.
Method 2 of 4: Using Spray Solution
Step 1. Mix hydrogen peroxide, baking soda and dish soap as a cleaning solution
If you prefer not to touch the stain directly with your hands, a spray cleaning solution may be for you. This mixture consists of about 300 grams of 3% hydrogen peroxide, 3 tablespoons (about 40 grams) of baking soda, and 1 or 2 drops of dish soap. Mix everything in a small bowl.
This mixture is likely to be slightly foamy. Wait for the foam to subside before putting it in a spray bottle. As a result, the solution will not be too thick and foamy
Step 2. Open the car door or window
That way, the smell of urine in the car will be reduced and the stain will dry faster.
Step 3. Spray the cleaner onto the stain area
Spray the cleaning solution onto the stain. Be sure to spray this solution all over the stain. Leave for 1 hour, or more, if desired.
Step 4. Blot a damp cloth onto the stain area
After the stain has been removed, there may still be residue of detergent or hydrogen peroxide on the car seat. This residue can attract dirt or damage the color of the car seat. Use a damp cloth to "rinse off" any residue from the cleaning solution, then pat the towel dry until everything is removed and the stained area is dry again.
Method 3 of 4: Cleaning Leather Upholstery
Step 1. Blot the urine stains with a kitchen paper towel
Removing stains from leather upholstery is different from cleaning other materials. However, if you find a new stain, you can still use a tissue to absorb it. Tap the tissue on the stain, you don't need to wipe it because it can actually make the stain wider.
Step 2. Remove the bearing
If you can, find the zipper on the car seat and then remove the foam padding. The stain may have seeped into this layer. If so, the part will smell of urine. If there is no zipper that will allow you to remove the foam padding from inside the seat, you can still proceed to the next step. However, act as quickly as possible so that the stain does not sink further into the upholstery foam.
Step 3. Clean the leather layer with a special leather cleaner
Simply pour a small amount of cleaning agent onto a sponge or rag and then wipe in a circular motion all over the seat, not just the stain spots. To prevent "water stains" from forming, every time you clean or wash leather, you should wash the entire surface, even the edges. Make sure the leather upholstery is dry evenly so there are no spots.
- "Nature's Miracle" is a well-known multi-purpose cleaning brand that can clean pet urine because it is able to destroy the chemicals contained in it effectively.
- If your car seats are suede, nubuck, or unfinished leather, it's a good idea to use a special cleaning product for these materials. Materials like these are likely to be damaged or discolored if cleaned with the wrong product.
- Try cleaning hidden areas on leather furniture to find out the impact first before using it widely. That way, you can tell if there are any harmful effects.
Step 4. Wash the upholstery foam pads manually
Use an enzyme or bacteria-based cleaner and gently wash the upholstery foam in the sink or tub.
Step 5. Dry the foam pad completely
To dry faster and help remove urine odor, dry the car seat foam pads in the sun, if you can.
Step 6. Dry the skin layer
Do not dry the skin layer in the sun because it can harden or turn a lighter color. Allow this coating to dry in a cool place in the room.
Method 4 of 4: Remove Old Stains
Step 1. Mix water, white vinegar and dish soap as a cleaning solution
If the urine is dry when you find it, you can still clean it. First, make a cleaning solution. Mix 120 ml of warm water, 120 ml of white vinegar, and 60 ml of liquid dish soap. Stir until foamy.
Step 2. Rub the scum into the stain with an old toothbrush
By using an old toothbrush, you don't need to buy a new brush that is soft and doesn't damage the car seat.
Since the stain has dried and has seeped deep into the car seat, you should not only pat and spray, but scrub it as well. By rubbing like this, the cleaning solution can go deeper into the car seat
Step 3. Set aside the foam
You can use a rubber spatula, or other hard, flat tool to quickly and effectively remove excess foam.
Step 4. Use a damp cloth to wipe the stain
Prepare a damp cloth and water and then pat the stain to remove any remaining cleaning solution.
Step 5. Use a dry cloth to dry the stain
Pat a dry cloth over the stain area until the entire stain is removed. Stop when the rag no longer absorbs water and feels dry after patting.
