YouTube supports a number of ways to add subtitles to your videos. These methods can be accessed by visiting the " Video Manager " on your YouTube channel, then selecting the " Subtitle and CC " option in the " Edit " menu. Next, select the method you want to use to add subtitles. You can also add subtitles to other people's videos by opening the desired video, accessing the options, and if allowed, selecting the "Add Subtitles or CC" option.

Method 1 of 4: Using the YouTube Subtitle Tool on Own Videos
Step 1. Log in to your YouTube account
Step 2. Tap "My Channel" at the top of the sidebar
Your personal page on YouTube will open.
Step 3. Select "Video Manager"
This button is located at the top left of your channel. A list of your uploaded videos will be displayed.
Video Manager can also be accessed by clicking on your account icon and going to " Creator Studio > Video Manager"
Step 4. Click the arrow in the "Edit" drop-down menu, then select "Subtitles and CC"
The " Edit " button and its menu are next to the video you want to add subtitles to. The subtitle adding interface will be displayed.
Step 5. Click the "Add New Subtitles" option, then select "Create new subtitles or closed caption"
You can find this button on the right side of the video in the add subtitles interface. There is a text area next to the video for adding subtitle entries.
Step 6. Select the language for your subtitles
This will categorize the subtitles based on the language used by youtubers (YouTube viewers) from all over the world who will see them later.
Those who are not native speakers (and have certain needs, such as people who are deaf) may find it useful to have Indonesian subtitles on videos that use Indonesian. So, feel free to add subtitles in the same language as the video
Step 7. Play the video and stop it when you want to add subtitles
You can use playback to hear what is said in the video before adding text to the text area.
Step 8. Insert subtitles into the text area
Add subtitles by clicking the blue "+" button next to the text area. The subtitles will appear in the transcript and timeline below the video.
Step 9. Set subtitle duration
The subtitles will be placed in the timeline where you stopped the video from playing. Click and drag the bars on either side of the subtitles to change the starting and stopping points for subtitles.
Step 10. Publish the video
When adding subtitles is complete, press the " Publish " button. The subtitles you add will be uploaded to the video.
Method 2 of 4: Adding Subtitles from a Subtitle File to a Video
Step 1. Run a text editing program
Good free programs are Notepad for Windows users or TextEdit for Mac computers. However, you can use any text editor.
Step 2. Create subtitles
The subtitle file uses a special format: subtitle number, timestamp (time format), and text (each text is placed on a different line). The format used in the timestamp is hours:minutes:seconds:milliseconds.

- From this example, the words "This is an example of subtitle text" will be placed as the first subtitle in the video at the specified time, which is 1 hour, 15 minutes, and 5 seconds.
Step 3. Click " File ", then select " Save As …". Here, you can set the file type using the SubRip (or srt) extension. This is the text format commonly used for video subtitles).
Step 4. Enter a file name ending with ".srt"
For example: 'subtitles.srt'. Giving an extension at the end of the name is needed to specify the file type.
Step 5. Select "Save As Type", then click "All Files"
This menu is below the file name field. Selecting " All Files " makes the extension a non - plaintext file.
Step 6. Select the " Encoding " menu, then click " UTF-8"
SubRip files will not work properly if you do not set this encoding. When finished, press the "Save" button.
Step 7. Open "Video Manager" on YouTube
Go to YouTube, then press " My Channel > Video Manager " to display a list of your uploaded videos.

The subtitles will be extracted from your.srt file and placed in the timeline and transcript.
Step 12. Set subtitles
Edit the text in the transcript, or change the timestamp by clicking and dragging the bars on either side of the subtitles in the timeline.
Step 13. Publish the video
Hit the " Publish " button, and the subtitles will be uploaded to your video.
Method 3 of 4: Using Automatic Transcript Sync from YouTube
Step 1. Open "Video Manager" on YouTube
Go to YouTube, then press " My Channel > Video Manager " to display a list of your uploaded videos.

Step 2. Click the arrow in the " Edit " drop-down menu, then click " Subtitles and CC"
The " Edit " button and its menu are next to the video you want to subtitle. The subtitle add interface will be opened.
Step 3. Select "Add New Subtitles", then click "Transcribe and auto-sync"
A field for entering subtitles will appear next to the video.
Step 4. Select the language for your subtitles
Step 5. Transcribe the video into the text area
Type all the spoken words into the text area to the right of the video. Don't worry about timing here.
Step 6. Press "Set Timings"
YouTube will automatically sync the captions to the timings in the video.
Step 7. Set the timings
Automatically synced subtitles will be displayed on the timeline. Click and drag the bars on either side of the subtitle to adjust the timing accuracy of the subtitle.
Step 8. Publish the video
When you're done, hit the " Publish " button, and the subtitles will be uploaded to your video.
Method 4 of 4: Adding Subtitles to Other People's Videos
Step 1. Select the video you want to add subtitles to
Look for other people's videos.
Step 2. Click the "Settings" (gear-shaped) icon located in the video player
The video menu options will be displayed.
Step 3. Click the "Subtitles/CC" option, then select "Add subtitles or CC"
The subtitle editing interface will be displayed.
Important note: Not all video uploaders approve adding subtitles from others. If they do not give permission to add subtitles, the " Add Subtitles or CC " option will not appear so you will not be able to add subtitles
Step 4. Select the language for the subtitles
Step 5. Play the video and stop it where you want to add subtitles
You can use playback to hear what the video says before adding subtitles to the text area to the right of the video.
Step 6. Set your subtitles
Subtitles will be placed in the timeline where you stopped the video from playing for each entry. Click and drag the bars on either side of the subtitles to change how long the subtitles appear for.
Step 7. Submit the subtitles by clicking "Submit for review"
Your subtitles will be sent to the video owner for review.
Step 8. Finish adding subtitles
You will be asked whether adding subtitles is complete or not. If you select " No ", other contributors can forward the subtitles you added before the last subtitle was sent to the video owner. If you select "Yes", the subtitles will be sent immediately for review. Once you have selected the desired option, press the "Submit" button to complete the process of adding subtitles.
Tips
- At this time, you cannot add subtitles / closed captions via the YouTube app on mobile devices.
- This method can also be done when you upload a new video by pressing the " Upload " button, then selecting the video you want to upload.
- If you can't finish adding subtitles at once, YouTube will automatically save your work in the subtitle draft. You can access these drafts later by selecting " My Drafts " when you resume adding subtitles.
