If you want to use the full power of your engine, maximizing horsepower by modifying the air ducts, exhaust ducts and overall engine performance can give you the power you want. You can maximize the efficiency and performance of your vehicle by making some changes and tips. See Step 1 for more information.

Method 1 of 2: Maximizing Machine Efficiency
Step 1. Make your vehicle as light as possible
The easiest and cheapest way to get the efficiency and power out of your engine is to reduce the load the car has to run. Even losing 10 kilograms will help you to accelerate faster. Remove useless items from your trunk and cabin and consider additional modifications that will lighten the load on your car:
- Get rid of the rear seats which can add up to 45 kilograms in weight on some models.
- Use wheels with high performance tires that are lighter than steel. This will help you to lighten the car up to 25 kilograms.
- Use carbon fiber or fiberglass body panels instead of factory panels. This is a more complicated modification, but if you are trying to get the most out of the engine and make the vehicle lighter, this is one way to go.
Step 2. Install the high suction air filter and air intake system
Changing the air filter to a higher performance variant can add some horsepower cheaply and quickly to the engine. You don't need to buy a new air filter, and you'll make your engine breathe better, adding less power. At around IDR 500,000,00-Rp 2,500,000,00 for most apps, this is a great starting point.
- The dryflow type AEM (Air filter brand) air filter will never require additional oil and is legal everywhere. K&N air filter (Air filter brand) for 1,600,000 km, and can add 5 horsepower or more depending on the vehicle.
- The cold air intake system or air duct sucks in air from cooler areas from outside the vehicle. Some cars have advantages and some do not. Usually, higher level cars don't have the advantage of this, as they already have a well-designed air intake system.
- Before modifying the air filter or using a high-performance system that you got from the internet, research your country's laws regarding air filter regulations. Some high intake filters are not permitted in all 50 states in America.
Step 3. Improve performance to the sewer system using pipes for inspection
Ideally, a header-back exhaust system would be installed, in which the exhaust duct goes very straight from the engine to the end of the exhaust pipe efficiently and quickly. If you have the equipment available, you'll need to do it yourself, saving a few hundred dollars, although to weld a new exhaust system to your car requires access to a repair shop that has hydraulic lifts, replacement systems, welding equipment, and a skilled person. Usually, you're better off paying the money to an exhaust shop that knows what they're doing when it comes to improving the performance of your exhaust system.
- A 4 cylinder engine must use a 2.5 inch exhaust pipe, unless a turbocharger has been used, a 3 inch pipe can be used. Cars with V6/V8 engines should use a 2.5 -3 inch exhaust pipe from base to end.
- Exhaust necks are expensive and will only add a little extra power. This is a great option, but only if you are tired of the opportunity to maximize the available horsepower.
Method 2 of 2: Maximizing Engine Performance
Step 1. Consider installing a performance camshaft
The performance camshaft increases the duration and timing of valve opening when the engine is running, increasing horsepower and making your car accelerate faster. You'll feel a little rougher idle with the performance camshaft, but getting a loud thump is great fun for some enthusiasts, depending on your vehicle. It's expensive, but the combination with the increased exhaust neck and exhaust system provides superior performance.
To install a new camshaft, you must open the valve passage by unscrewing the valve cover and see how it works. Loosen and unscrew the old chain link and camshaft to install the new version. Adjust the camshaft timing and engineer the new camshaft if needed
Step 2. Research on turbocharger and supercharger options
A turbocharger can add up to 25-30% additional power. However, turbocharger kits cost around $3000 for typical applications and get more expensive for unusual applications. Turbochargers are difficult for novice mechanics to install. Research the right system and options for your car model and consider your options.
- Turbocharger sucks air into the engine, adding boost and horsepower. An intercooler also needs to be fitted with a turbocharger to avoid the symptom of turbo-lag, where the engine overheats and slows down the impeller.
- The supercharger is a device that is driven by the engine belt, making it more effective for engines above 6 cylinders. If a turbocharger produces a higher horsepower boost, the supercharger does not require an intercooler and results in fewer heat symptoms and maintenance problems. Superchargers are available in centrifugal, screw or root type models, depending on the engine type.
- Nitrous or nitrous oxide is the energy stored in the bottle. This compound is an oxidizer, having 2 oxygen molecules for each nitrogen molecule. In a hot engine, these molecules will break down and release oxygen, lowering the intake temperature allowing more power and fuel. This equipment is sold for between IDR 4,000,000-IDR 40,000,000 for all usage. Basic nitrous equipment is fairly easy to install, while high-performance equipment requires extra skill. The nitrous system also requires additional fuel because the extra air is only useful with the extra fuel. The additional power obtained can be between 5Hp to 100Bhp in the entire rpm range.
Step 3. Install water-injection or anti-detonant injection equipment
At a price of IDR 4,000,000, 00 a good water injection can increase gas mileage and power while reducing carbon build-up in the combustion chamber, preventing the engine from tickling. Often times, having multiple systems installed can lead to you buying lower octane gasoline. While water injection devices have almost no performance gain in naturally aspirated engines, water injection can help restore lost power. Engines with turbo or superchargers will have a large power that is multiplied by water-injection.
