The square meter is a measure of "area" and is usually used to measure flat areas, such as pitches or floors. For example, you could measure the area of the sofa in square meters, then measure the area of your living room in square meters to determine if the sofa will fit in it. If you only have a ruler or tape measure that uses another unit of measurement (not meters), you can still use it as a measuring tool, only then you need to convert the result to square meters.
Step
Method 1 of 3: Calculating Area in Square Meters
Step 1. Select the ruler or tape measure you will use
Select the ruler or meter in meters (m) or centimeters (cm) printed on it. This tool will make it easier for you to calculate the area in square meters, because it has been designed with the same units of measurement.
But if you can only find a ruler in feet or inches, measure it with that meter, and then convert your measurements to square meters
Step 2. Measure the length of the area
A square meter is a unit of area, or the size of a two-dimensional object such as a floor or a floor. Use your measuring tool to measure one side of the object from one end to the other. Then write down the results.
- If the object you are measuring is longer than 1 meter, then make sure to include the entire measurement result, both meters and the remaining centimeters. For example, "2 meters 35 centimeters."
- If you want to measure an object that isn't a square or a rectangle, see the Complex Shapes section.
Step 3. If you can't measure the entire length of an object at once, do it gradually
Measure with your measuring tool, then place a stone or other small object exactly at the end point, as a marker (such as 1 meter or 25 centimeters). Take your measuring instrument and take the measurement again starting from the mark you have placed. Repeat until the entire length of the object is measured, and add up your measurements.
Step 4. Measure the width of the object
Use the same measuring tool to measure the width of the object. The side you measure in this step should have an angle close to 90º with the side you measured earlier. Write down the results of the width measurement you get.
Unless the object you're measuring is much smaller than 1 meter, you can round the result to the nearest centimeter you found when you took the measurement. For example, if the width you obtained is 1 meter 8 centimeters, use '"1m 8cm" as your measurement result, without using millimeters or other decimal units of measurement
Step 5. Convert centimeters to meters
Usually the measurement results will not be exact in meters, and you will get results in meters and centimeters., for example "2 meters 35 centimeters." Since 1 centimeter = 0.01 meters, you can change the centimeter size by moving two decimal places to the left. Here are some examples:
- 35 cm = 0.35 m, so 2 m 35 cm = 2 m + 0.35 m = 2, 35 m
- 8 cm = 0.08 m, so 1 m 8 cm = 1, 08m
Step 6. Multiply the length and width values you get
After you measure both sides and convert them to meters, multiply them to get the area in square meters. Use a calculator if necessary. For example:
2.35 m x 1.08 m = 2.5272 square meters (m2).
Step 7. Round off your measurements
If you get a measurement with many decimal places, for example 2,572 square meters, you may need to round it to a number with fewer decimal places, for example to 2, 53 square meters. In fact, because you may not be taking your measurements correctly, the last digit in your result may not be correct either. In most cases, you can round to the nearest centimeter value (0.01 m). For more accurate measurement results, try rounding to a significant number.
Whenever you multiply two numbers with the same unit (for example meters), the result will always be expressed in the square of the unit (m2, or square meters).
Method 2 of 3: Converting from Other Units
Step 1. Multiply the square foot by 0.093
Measure the length and width in feet and multiply the results to get a square foot. Since 1 square foot = 0.093 square meters, multiply your result by 0.093 to get the result in square meters. Square meters are wider than square feet, so the numbers obtained will be smaller for the same area.
To get a more accurate result, multiply by 0.092903
Step 2. Multiply square yards by 0.84
If you get your measurement in square yards, multiply it by 0.84 to get the result in square meters.
To get a more accurate result, multiply by 0.83613
Step 3. Multiply acres by 4050
One acre is equal to about 4050 square meters. If you want a more accurate result, multiply it by 4046.9.
Step 4. Convert square miles to square kilometers
A square mile is very much larger than a square meter, so usually a square mile is converted to a square kilometer. Multiply square miles by 2.6 to convert them to square kilometers. (Or multiply by 2.59 to get a more accurate result).
If you really need to convert to square meters, 1 square kilometer = 1,000,000 square meters.
Step 5. Convert square meters into "area" units, not length units
A square meter is a unit of area, or two-dimensional surface. You can't convert it to a unit that only measures "length" or one-way distance. You can convert "square meters" into "square feet" but not just "feet".
Do not use the calculations in this section to change units of length. Because it requires a different number
Method 3 of 3: Calculating Square Meters for Complex Fields
Step 1. Divide the field into sections
If you are trying to answer a math problem, draw a dividing line to divide the area you are going to measure into simpler areas, such as rectangles or triangles. If you are measuring a room or other physical object, sketch the area first and then do the same. Follow the instructions below to determine the area of each, then add the results together.
Step 2. Measure the rectangle shape as usual
To determine the area in square meters for a rectangular area, see the instructions for calculating the area in square meters.
If you will be measuring in different units, see the different units section
Step 3. Measuring the area of a triangle is not much different from measuring a rectangle, only that you need to divide the result by two
Right-angled triangles that have 90 angles are easy to measure. Measure the two adjacent sides of the 90º angle (length and width), multiply them, then divide by two to get the area in square meters.
This method works because a right triangle is a rectangle divided by two. Basically, you'll find the area of the rectangle first, which is then divided by two to find the area of the triangle
Step 4. Turn another triangle into a right triangle, then measure its area
Draw a line from any corner to the other side, so that the line is perpendicular to the other side and forms a 90º angle (think of the corner of a square) You just divided the triangle into two parts, each of which is a right triangle. See the instructions above to find out how to calculate the area of a right triangle; measure each triangle separately, and add up the results.
Step 5. Calculate the area of the circle
The area of a circle can be measured using the equation r2, where r is the radius of the circle or the distance from the center of the circle to the edge of the circle. Measure this distance, multiply it by the same value, and then multiply it again by the value of on the calculator. If you don't have a calculator with a value, use the number 3.14 (or 3.1416 if you need more precision.
- If you're not sure where the center of the circle is, have your friend hold the tape measure and walk around the edge of the circle. Hold the other end and adjust your position until the measurement results in the same number while your friend walks on the edge.
- More complicated plane shapes such as curvature will require more complicated mathematical calculations. If you're measuring it for practical purposes, try to estimate it, imagining the shape of a curved line as a straight line.
Tips
- Say "five square meters" instead of "five meters squared." Both of these statements are technically correct, but the second statement is often misunderstood that the area is 5 m by 5 meters (which then should be 25 square meters).
-
If you're not sure you can calculate accurately, double-check your measurements with the following comparison:
- The area of the football field is about 5,400 square meters.
- The area of a football field is about 4,000 to 11,000 square meters.
- King ukran mattress is about 5 square meters.
