Mattresses are designed with standard sizes such as twin, full, queen, and king. It is recommended that you find a mattress that is (at least) 10 cm longer than the height of the tallest person (eg in your family) who will use it. You can take the following measurements to make sure you choose the right mattress size.

Part 1 of 2: Measuring the Mattress
Step 1. Remove all sheets or other mattress fittings
You need to measure the mattress right from the end.
Step 2. Prepare the meter roller (commonly used in building construction)
You can ask a friend to help hold or hold the roller if the roller cannot be held or locked.
Step 3. Provide a pen and paper to record the measurement results which will be used as a reference
You can use the measurement results to find out the type of mattress that is in the next step. Alternatively, you can measure the area of the room to find out the type/size of the mattress that will fit in the room.
Step 4. Hook the end of the tape measure on the left side of the mattress
Pull the roller until it reaches the right side of the mattress. Record the measurement results as the width of the mattress.
Step 5. Hook the end of the tape measure on the top center of the mattress
Pull the roller until it reaches the bottom center of the mattress. Record the measurement results as the length of the mattress.
Part 2 of 2: Setting the Mattress Size
Step 1. Find out if the available mattresses are twin-size or twin beds
Most twin-sized mattresses are 100 cm wide, while the narrow twin type is 90 cm wide. The standard length of this type of mattress is 190 cm. In Indonesia, twin beds are also known as single beds or mattresses "number 4" and have a size of 200 x 90 cm.
- In the UK, the single type mattress is 90 cm wide.
- Extra-long twin beds (such as those used in dormitories) are 200 cm long. For a mattress like this, look for sheets with the label “x-long twin” on the bag or package.
- Mattresses of this type/size are commonly used in almost all standard bunk beds.
Step 2. Switch to a full size mattress if the mattress is 140 cm wide
This type of mattress also has a length of 190 cm. In the UK (and sometimes the United States), this type of mattress is known as a “double bed”. In Indonesia, double beds are known as “number 3” mattresses and have a size of 200 x 120 cm.
Twin beds can accommodate one person, while full or double beds can accommodate one large person or two children or adults
Step 3. Switch to a queen bed if the mattress is 150 cm wide
This type of mattress has a length of 200 cm. If the length of the mattress reaches 210 cm, the mattress is referred to as a California queen mattress. In Indonesia, queen beds are known as “number 2” mattresses and have dimensions of 200 x 160 cm.
- In the UK, there is no equivalent type of mattress to the queen type. The next bigger type is the king type.
- Another type of queen bed-known as “super queen” or “expanded queen”-is 168-170 cm wide and 200-203 cm long. The expanded queen type is also thicker than the standard super queen or queen type.
- The queen bed type (or larger) is designed to fit two adults.
Step 4. Find out if your mattress is a king mattress
If the mattress is 190 cm wide and 200 cm long, your mattress falls into the standard king category. In the UK, king beds are smaller in size at 152 cm wide and 200 cm long. In Indonesia, the king mattress is known as the "number 1" mattress with dimensions of 200 x 180 cm.
Step 5. Pay attention to additional size options if your mattress or bedroom is a much larger size
The California king mattress is 180 cm wide and 210 cm long, while the grand king type is 200 cm wide and 250 cm long. In the UK, super king mattresses are 180 cm long and 200 cm long. In Indonesia, super king mattresses usually have dimensions of 200 x 200 cm.
Tips
- If you want to choose a mattress based on the measurements described in this article, keep in mind that you will need 30-60 cm of space on both sides of the mattress to allow you to move easily in the room.
- It's a good idea to measure the thickness or height of the mattress before buying a bed sheet set. Pillow-top or extra-thick mattresses require deeper “pockets” (the corners of the sheets). Examine the bedding sets you find to see if they fit on a pillow-top or extra-thick mattress.
