Commercial perfumes, body sprays, and colognes are sometimes sold at very high prices. Because some products are made from harmful synthetic chemicals (known as allergens, hormone disruptors, and irritants), these products can trigger a variety of negative health effects. Luckily, you can easily make your own perfumed body mist at home! With a wide selection of fragrances and recipes to choose from, there are tons of combinations you can try and create. Making a perfumed body mist at home can be a fun, simple project that can help you save money, and keep yourself healthy.
Step
Method 1 of 4: Making a Perfumed Body Mist from Essential Oils
Step 1. Gather the ingredients
While there are variations to this product, most homemade body mists are made from the same four basic ingredients: essential oils, alcohol, distilled water, and glycerol. This botanical blend is natural, unlike most store-bought perfumes and colognes and is made of synthetic ingredients. To make 240 ml of perfumed body mist, you will need:
- 10 tablespoons of alcohol.
- tablespoon essential oil.
- 4 tablespoons of distilled water.
- tablespoon vegetable glycerol.
Step 2. Mix the alcohol and essential oil
Use a clean container and spoon to mix the alcohol and essential oil of your choice. Stir the ingredients carefully 20 times using a spoon until all the ingredients are evenly mixed.
- You can use medical alcohol or vodka for this recipe. However, medical alcohol has a strong odor that many people don't like, while vodka has a much more neutral odor.
- If you don't want to use alcohol at all (some people find it too harsh or dry out your skin), you can substitute witch hazel extract.
- You are free to choose the essential oil you need to use. Choose an oil you like or use several types of oil to create a different scent or a unique blend.
Step 3. Use a separate container to mix the glycerol and water
Prepare a clean container to mix the two ingredients. You don't need to stir the two ingredients quickly and vigorously. Usually, the two ingredients are evenly mixed when you stir them 15-20 times with a spoon. If you want, you don't need to add vegetable glycerol. However, because it acts as a binding agent for other ingredients, it is recommended that you use glycerol whenever possible.
- Glycerol can also moisturize the skin and make the perfume last longer on the skin. If you don't want to use it, you can still produce a fragrant product. However, the fragrance tends to fade or disappear faster.
- You can also replace the glycerol with vegetable oil, jojoba oil, or even olive oil. The three types of oil act as binders and carriers, such as glycerol.
- Distilled water is the most recommended ingredient. However, you can also use filtered water or mineral water.
- For a longer lasting fragrance, replace the distilled water with rose water or orange blossom water. These two ingredients can strengthen the fragrance and nourish the skin.
Step 4. Combine the two mixtures
Mix the two by combining them in another container. You can also pour one mixture into another mixing container. Stir all ingredients slowly for about 60 seconds until evenly mixed.
Step 5. Pour the mixture into a 240 ml spray bottle
Use a funnel to make it easier for you to transfer the mixture into a glass or plastic spray bottle. You can use new or used bottles. If you are using an old bottle, sterilize the bottle first so you have a really clean container to store the body mist mixture.
- Dark bottles or containers are a better choice because exposure to light (even small amounts) can damage or reduce the fragrance of the mixture.
- Plastic bottles can effectively contain diluted essential oils (such as body mist mixtures). However, never store undiluted essential oils in plastic containers or bottles as strong oils can damage the plastic.
Step 6. Leave the mixture in a cool, cool place for two weeks
In this time period, the ingredients will melt so that the aroma can develop thoroughly. Take out the bottle daily and shake it a few times to encourage or speed up the mixing process.
After two weeks, your perfumed body mist is ready to go
Step 7. Store the body mist in a cool and cool place
To maintain the integrity and durability of the mixture, keep the body mist away from exposure to extreme temperatures. Do not store the mixture in the bathroom as heat and humidity can damage the molecular structure of the mixture. You should also not store it near a window or expose it to sunlight as the quality of the mixture will deteriorate.
- Hot and humid places (e.g. bathrooms) also encourage the growth of bacteria in the bottle, which can pose a health risk to you.
- Make sure the bottle used is an airtight bottle, and that the cap is always attached when the body mist is not in use.
- The alcohol content in the mixture will evaporate more quickly when exposed to air. The mixture will dry faster too.
Method 2 of 4: Making Perfume Mist for Hair
Step 1. Gather the required materials
There are many different formulas and variations you can try to make hair perfume mists, but they all include three basic ingredients: pure vanilla extract, essential oils, and rosewater. Most commercial hair mist perfume products are made from artificial fragrances and harmful chemicals. However, this botanical recipe is natural, smells fresh, and has health benefits. To make 120 ml of hair perfume mist, you will need:
- 1 teaspoon pure vanilla extract.
- 20-25 drops of essential oil.
- 4 x 120 ml rose water.
- A spray bottle (glass or plastic) with a volume of 120 ml.
Step 2. Mix the vanilla extract with the essential oil
Measure out the ingredients, then pour them directly into a 120 ml spray bottle. Gently shake or shake the bottle to mix the vanilla extract and essential oil. Usually, you only need to shake or shake the bottle 15-20 times/round.
- Use any combination of essential oils you want. However, if you're running out of ideas and unsure of which oil to use, try this helpful mixture: 3 drops patchouli oil, 4 drops ylang ylang oil, 3 drops rosemary oil, 4 drops cedar oil, 5 drops lavender oil, 4 drops lime oil gedang, and 4 drops of bergamot oil.
- Feel free to adjust the amount of oil to your liking and don't use any oil you don't like. Make sure you use a total of 20-25 drops of oil.
Step 3. Pour rose water into a spray bottle
Fill the spray bottle with rosewater almost to the brim, leaving a 2-centimeter space from the lip of the bottle. Tighten the nozzle, and close the spray bottle again. Shake the bottle for about 60 seconds until all the ingredients are evenly mixed. Perfume mist for hair is now ready to use!
- You are free to use a new or used spray bottle. If you are using an old bottle, make sure you clean and disinfect the bottle thoroughly first.
- Dark bottles or containers are a better choice because exposure to light (even small amounts) can damage or reduce the fragrance of the mixture.
Step 4. Spray the mixture on towel-dried hair
Hairstyle as usual to show off the charm of fragrant hair. This perfume mist is also suitable for refreshing hair that has not been washed for 2-3 days. Spray a small amount of the mixture on your hair to freshen it up.
Step 5. Store hair perfume mist in the refrigerator
Thus, the integrity of the material and the durability of the mixture can be maintained. After using the mixture, immediately store the mixture in the refrigerator again. Make sure you use an airtight bottle and that the cap is always on when the perfume mist is not in use.
Method 3 of 4: Choosing Essential Oils for Perfume
Step 1. Choose an oil based on its aroma group
When using essential oils as fragrances, the best initial aspect you can consider is the aroma group. The main scent groups include floral, woodsy, earthy, citrusy, oriental, and spicy. Oils that are in the same category/group usually match or match when mixed. Some of the most popular and easy to find essential oils for each scent group include:
- Floral fragrance group: lavender, rose, neroli and jasmine.
- Wood scent group: pine and cedar.
- Earth/earth fragrance group: oakmoss, vetiver, and patchouli.
- Citrus scent group: orange, lemon, and lime.
- Aroma group of spices: cloves and cinnamon.
- Oriental fragrance group: ginger and patchouli.
Step 2. Mix lavender, jasmine, and neroli oils to make a floral perfume mist
To make 240 ml of perfume mist, you will need tablespoon of essential oil. This dose is approximately equivalent to 110 drops of oil. To make a floral scented perfume mist with the previously described formula, try the following recipe:
- 40 drops lavender essential oil.
- 35 drops of neroli essential oil.
- 35 drops of jasmine essential oil.
- 10 tablespoons of alcohol.
- 4 tablespoons of distilled water.
- tablespoon vegetable glycerol.
Step 3. Experiment with your own modifications
Once you understand the basic formula or recipe, you can be creative and experiment with different proportions of essential oils. For example, you can modify the above formula to make the lavender scent even stronger by choosing only two oils from the same scent group, lavender and neroli.
- Adjust the lavender oil dose to 70 drops.
- Adjust the amount of neroli oil to 40 drops.
- In all, you are using 110 drops and that amount matches the dose required in the recipe. Follow the next steps in the recipe and you will get a floral or floral fragrance.
Step 4. Mix oakmoss oil, vetiver, and patchouli to make a perfume mist with an earthy scent
The original formula that needs to be followed remains the same, but this time the scent group used is earthy or earthy. Once you understand the original or basic formula, experiment with oil proportions, such as when you make perfume with floral oils. To get started, try this recipe for an earthy perfume mist:
- 50 drops of oakmoss essential oil.
- 40 drops of patchouli essential oil.
- 20 drops of vetiver essential oil.
- 10 tablespoons of alcohol.
- 4 tablespoons of distilled water.
- tablespoon vegetable glycerol.
Step 5. Mix floral and citron oils for a layered scent
Some aroma groups are suitable to be mixed with other aroma groups. For example, floral and citron oils are two groups of scents that generally make for the right mix or match. Using the same formula as before, create a refreshing perfume mist with a citrus and floral scent by modifying the recipe using lavender oil and lime oil:
- 85 drops lavender essential oil.
- 25 drops of gedang lime essential oil.
- 10 tablespoons of alcohol.
- 4 tablespoons of distilled water.
- tablespoon vegetable glycerol.
Step 6. Combine more than one layered mixture to create a unique aroma
In addition to the floral and citrus scent groups, there are several other scent groups that complement each other and are suitable to be combined. Follow the same formula as before and read this general guide to mixing different oils from different scent groups:
- The floral oil blend goes well with oils from the spice, citron, and woody scent groups.
- The oriental oil blend goes well with oils from the floral and citrus scent groups.
- Wood scent group oils are usually compatible with all scent groups.
- Experiment! By trying different types of oils, mixing oils from one scent group with another, and modifying the proportions, the options or possibilities you can create are almost limitless!
Method 4 of 4: Try Aromatherapy
Step 1. Define your therapeutic goals
Essential oils have a unique and refreshing aroma in a perfume mist mixture. However, essential oils also provide a variety of benefits for mental, physical, and emotional health. Cultures around the world have used essential oils for thousands of years for this purpose. When choosing essential oils for a perfume mist or body mist blend, maximize the therapeutic benefits of the oil by considering the specific physical or mental health disorder you wish to treat.
- Inhaling various types of essential oils alone can provide various psychological and physical benefits known as “aromatherapy”.
- The use of essential oils, both inhaled and topically offers medicinal benefits, as well as several additional advantages in terms of health, hygiene, and beauty.
Step 2. Choose essential oils to use as aromatherapy
Various mental and emotional reactions can be triggered by inhaling the aromas of certain essential oils. You can choose one type of oil or combine several types to experience a combination of positive effects. Aromatherapy is a broad subject/field, but there are several oils that are generally chosen for therapeutic purposes.
- Roman chamomile essential oil has a calming substance or fragrance that can relieve stress.
- Clary sage essential oil contains substances that can relieve anxiety and promote relaxation.
- Neroli essential oil has a rich aroma with antidepressant effects. In addition, this oil can also relieve stress.
- Value essential oils have substances that can relieve depression.
- Lavender essential oil has properties that promote calm and relaxation.
- Lemon essential oil has a refreshing aroma that can relieve depression and boost energy.
Step 3. Choose essential oils with medicinal benefits
The natural chemicals present in essential oils can provide medicinal or healing benefits when applied topically to the skin, or when inhaled and into the lungs. The medicinal benefits of essential oils vary widely, but not all oils like this can be the right base for a perfume mist or body mist because some oils don't have a pleasant smell. Fortunately, there are many oils that are not only fragrant, but also offer medicinal benefits for health.
- Roman chamomile essential oil acts as an antispasmodic and sedative. In addition, this oil contains anti-inflammatory properties and can relieve insomnia, and help smooth sleep.
- Lavender essential oil can relieve headaches and migraines. You can use it topically to relieve minor skin irritations, reduce insomnia, and promote sleep.
- Clary sage essential oil can relieve pain due to menstruation and childbirth. In addition, this oil is also considered as an aphrodisiac.
- Neroli essential oil contains antispasmodic substances and is useful in the process of pregnancy/delivery. In addition, this oil can also relieve postpartum depression.
- Patchouli essential oil calms the nervous system and contains anti-inflammatory properties.
- Eucalyptus essential oil has antibacterial properties and can relieve muscle pain. Through the process of inhalation, this oil can relieve sinuses and boost the immune system.
Step 4. Be careful when using essential oils
Due to their high concentration, essential oils can have a negative impact if used carelessly. Consult the use of oil with your doctor first if you are pregnant, nursing, or have a weakened immune system. If you have sensitive skin, test a small area of skin first before applying any essential oil topically.
- Essential oils are too strong or harsh to use directly on the skin without being diluted. Some types of oil can cause skin irritation.
- Use the highest quality essential oils available. Look for phrases or labels such as “pure grade”, “aromatherapy grade”, “certified organic”, and “therapeutic grade” on the bottle or product packaging.
