Oil stains can be removed from the carpet using one of the methods below. However, before that, place a cloth or kitchen tissue on the oil spill and then press it gently. Do not rub the oil stains because it will further seep into the carpet fibers. Clean carpet stains from the outside in. No matter what type of oil is on the carpet, you can still use the following methods to clean it. The following method can be used to clean up spills of vehicle oil, olive oil, baby oil, and all other types of oil.

Method 1 of 3: Using Baking Soda and Cornstarch
Step 1. Dust the stained area with baking soda or cornstarch
Sprinkle a lot of baking soda/flour. You don't have to be afraid to use too much. Both baking soda and cornstarch are absorbents that can absorb moisture, especially oil. Both of these materials will not leave stains or damage the carpet coating.
- One of the advantages of using baking soda or cornstarch is that they are inexpensive.
- Another advantage is that they are both non-toxic and made from organic sources. Baking soda and cornstarch have no negative effects on either the environment or your body.
Step 2. Rub baking soda or cornstarch on the carpet
Do not rub too gently or too vigorously. Just rub the baking soda and cornstarch into the carpet fibers. Use a carpet brush for large stains, and a toothbrush for small stains.
Step 3. Let the baking soda or cornstarch absorb the oil then suck it out with a tool
This means that you must let the baking soda/flour sit for at least 15 minutes. Once the baking soda or cornstarch has absorbed the oil, use a vacuum cleaner to remove it from the carpet.
Be sure to suck up all the remaining baking soda/flour from the carpet
Step 4. Pour a few drops of dish soap on the stain area
Use a carpet brush or an old toothbrush to rub the soap into the carpet. Pour a little warm water on the stain area and immediately apply a layer of clean cloth or sponge then press to absorb it.
- Don't panic if soap bubbles form at this step. Keep pressing the rag or sponge until all the soap residue is removed and the carpet is relatively dry.
- The more soap and water you use, the longer this step will take.
Step 5. Allow the carpet to dry completely
Check the carpet fibers carefully to make sure there is no oil remaining. Repeat the cleaning process if the oil stain is still visible on the carpet.
Method 2 of 3: Using Liquid Alcohol
Step 1. Pour a small amount of alcohol into a clean cloth or kitchen paper
Be careful because this liquid is toxic and flammable. Be sure to always use liquid alcohol in a well-ventilated room and wash your hands afterward. Keep this liquid away from children and pets.
- If used with care, liquid alcohol is actually safe.
- One of the advantages of using liquid alcohol is that it may already be in your medicine box.
Step 2. Press the rubbing alcohol onto the stained area on the carpet
After pressing the alcohol on the entire area of the stain, allow the carpet to dry. If the oil stain is still visible, repeat this step again with more rubbing alcohol.
Because it is a solvent, the alcohol will dissolve the oil and release it from the carpet fibers
Step 3. Clean the remaining alcohol liquid from the carpet
Once the carpet is dry enough and the oil stain has been removed, rinse the area with water and then pat dry with a clean cloth or paper towel. This should remove any remaining liquid and alcohol odor.
- Don't use air fresheners or perfumes to get rid of the alcohol smell, as this will only make it more pungent.
- Instead, open the window and turn on the fan to increase airflow in the room.
Method 3 of 3: Using Dry Wash Solvent
Step 1. Try using a small amount of dry cleaning solvent first
Before using this product on oil stains on the carpet, try pouring it first on a clean cloth or kitchen paper and then pressing it into a hidden area on the carpet. After a few minutes, take a damp cloth and pat the area to remove the solvent. Then, allow it to dry and make sure the solvent doesn't stain or stain the carpet.
Step 2. Use dry cleaning solvent on the oil stain
With a rag or kitchen paper, press the solvent into the oil stain on the carpet, from the outside to the inside. Press firmly enough that the solvent can seep deep into the carpet fibers.
Step 3. After 5 minutes, take a damp cloth or kitchen paper and pat the remaining solvent on the carpet
Then, allow the area to dry. Try turning on a fan or dehumidifier in the room to speed up the carpet drying process.
Step 4. Check for residual oil stains on the dry carpet
If the oil stain still remains, repeat the cleaning method as above. You may need to clean the stain on the carpet repeatedly until it is completely gone. This is normal because the oil may seep deep into the carpet fibers after the first cleaning.
Tips
- Remove as much of the oil spill as possible by pressing a rag or kitchen paper as soon as the stain is found. If oil or grease spills seep into the cushioning under the carpet, you may need to ask a professional carpet cleaner for help. Therefore, you should absorb as much of the spilled oil as possible before it sinks in.
- If the oil spill stain is very large, try using an old towel instead of a rag or kitchen paper.
- If the oil stain doesn't go away even after repeated cleaning in the same way, try the second method.
- Consider trying all three of the methods above in order. The first method is the easiest and safest because baking soda and cornstarch are both non-toxic and may be in your kitchen. The second method also only uses products that are commonly found at home. However, the liquid alcohol is poisonous and has a pungent smell. Meanwhile, to try the third method, you may have to buy dry cleaning solvent at the store.
