This wikiHow teaches you how to block pop-up ads on Google Chrome, both desktop and mobile versions, and how to block ads on the Google Chrome desktop browser using the AdBlock and Adblock Plus extensions. Unfortunately, while using ad blocker extensions can remove ads embedded on web pages (e.g. ads on Facebook pages), you can't use them to hide ads on the mobile version of Chrome.

Method 1 of 4: Using Browser Settings on a Desktop Computer
Step 1. Open
Google Chrome.
This browser icon looks like a red, yellow, green, and blue ball.
Step 2. Click
It's in the upper-right corner of the window. After that, a drop-down menu will be displayed.
Step 3. Click Settings
This option is at the bottom of the drop-down menu. Once clicked, the browser settings page (“Settings”) will be displayed.
Step 4. Scroll down and click on Advanced
It's at the bottom of the page. Once clicked, a new options segment will be displayed.
Step 5. Scroll down and click Content Settings…
It's at the bottom of the "Privacy and security" section.
Step 6. Click Ads
It's at the bottom of the page.
Step 7. Click the blue "Allowed" switch
The switch is shown at the top of the page. Once clicked, the switch color will turn gray
which indicates that Chrome is no longer showing annoying ads on most sites.
If you see the message "Blocked on sites that tend to show intrusive ads (recommended) " and the redirect is grayed out, Chrome has blocked the annoying ads
Step 8. Click the "Back" button
It's in the upper-left corner of the browser window.
Step 9. Click on Popups
This option is in the “Content Settings” menu.
Step 10. Click the blue “Allowed” switch
As before, the switch color will turn gray to indicate that you have successfully disabled pop-up ads on Chrome.
If you see a "Blocked (recommended)" message and a gray redirect on this page, Chrome has blocked pop-up ads
Method 2 of 4: Using Browser Settings on Mobile Devices
Step 1. Open
Google Chrome.
Tap the Chrome icon, which looks like a red, yellow, green, and blue ball. While you can't block on-page ads on the mobile version of Google Chrome, you can prevent pop-up ads from appearing that fill the screen.
Step 2. Touch
It's in the upper-right corner of the screen. After that, a drop-down menu will be displayed.
Step 3. Touch Settings
This option is at the bottom of the drop-down menu.
Step 4. Touch Content Settings (iPhone) or Site settings (Android).
This option is at the bottom of the page.
Step 5. Tap Block Pop-ups (iPhone) or Pop-ups (Android).
It's at the top of the screen (iPhone) or at the bottom of the screen (Android).
Step 6. Disable pop-up ads
This process is slightly different, depending on the device used (e.g. iPhone or Android device):

iPhone - Touch the gray "Block Pop-ups" toggle
to enable blocking. The switch color will turn blue after that.

Android - Touch the blue " Pop-ups " switch
to enable blocking. The switch color will turn gray afterwards
Method 3 of 4: Using AdBlock on Desktop Version of Chrome
Step 1. Open
Google Chrome.
The browser is marked by a red, yellow, green, and blue ball icon.
Step 2. Visit the AdBlock site
Go to https://getadblock.com/ via Chrome's address bar.
Step 3. Click the GET ADBLOCK NOW button
It's a blue button in the middle of the page. After that, you will be taken to the browser extension installation page.
Step 4. Click Add extension when prompted
Chrome will reload the page when the AdBlock extension is finished installing.
Step 5. Click the AdBlock icon
This icon looks like a red stop sign with a white palm in the top-right corner of the Chrome window.
Step 6. Click Options
It's in the middle of the AdBlock drop-down menu.
Step 7. Click the FILTER LISTS tab
This tab is at the top of the page.
Step 8. Uncheck the "Acceptable Ads" box
This option is at the top of the “FILTER LISTS” page. After that, the number of ads that AdBlock blocked will be added.
If this box is unchecked, skip this step
Step 9. Check additional ad blocking options
Advanced ad blocking options include:
- ” Adblock Warning Removal list ” – This option removes warnings on websites about running AdBlock extensions.
- ” Antisocial filter list ” – This feature will remove the “Like” button on Facebook, along with other social media buttons.
- ” EasyPrivacy ” – This feature helps protect privacy by blocking tracking.
- ” Fanboy's Annoyances ” – This feature removes various “annoying” little things on the web.
- “ Malware protection ” – This feature blocks sites that are known to have malware problems.
Step 10. Close the AdBlock tab
Now, your Google Chrome is almost completely free of ads.
Method 4 of 4: Using Adblock Plus on Desktop Version of Chrome
Step 1. Open
Google Chrome.
The browser is marked by a red, yellow, green, and blue ball icon.
Step 2. Open the Adblock Plus site
Visit https://adblockplus.org/ via Chrome's address bar.
Adblock Plus is not related to AdBlock
Step 3. Click Agree and Install for Chrome
It's a green button on the right side of the page. After that, you will be taken to the browser extension installation page.
This button also contains the name of the browser
Step 4. Click Add extension when prompted
It's in the upper-right corner of the extension window. After that, Adblock Plus will be installed to your browser immediately.
Chrome will reload the page when the Adblock Plus extension is finished installing
Step 5. Click the Adblock Plus icon
It's a red stop sign with white "ABP" in the top-right corner of the Chrome window.
Step 6. Click Options
It's in the drop-down menu below the ABP icon.
Step 7. Uncheck the "Allow Acceptable Ads" box
It's in the " Acceptable Ads " section at the top of the page. This option serves to display multiple ads so that by unchecking it, you can block as many ads as possible in your browser.
- If the check box is removed, Adblock Plus will not display non-intrusive ads.
- If you don't see this option, make sure you're on the options tab. Filter lists ”.
Step 8. Close the Adblock Plus tab
Now, your Google Chrome is almost completely free of ads.
